The Wisconsin Badgers (3-1, 1-0 Big Ten) face the Ohio State Buckeyes (4-0, 0-0) in Big Ten Conference play Saturday night in Columbus, Ohio.

The Buckeyes get Braxton Miller (QB) back after missing two weeks with a knee injury.  They are expected to give backup Kenny Guiton some snaps as well.  Guiton already has 12 touchdown passes under his belt.

The Badger did a number in defending Miller the last time they played, holding him to 48 yards rushing and 97 yards passing.  He’s a run first quarterback and the Badgers no doubt have been devising schemes to try to shut him down again.

For the Badgers to have a chance to win, they need better quarterback play from Joel Stave.  He’s struggled in the passing game the last couple of weeks and has lost his touch on the deep ball to senior Jared Abbrederis.  The Badgers already have one of the best rush units in college football, but if they can’t throw it, the Buckeyes will load the box and make life difficult on Melvin Gordon and company.

I have more thoughts on Saturday nights game, along with Mariano Rivera’s final game in New York and MLB Commissioner Bud Selig announcing that he is stepping down in 2015 in this WRN Sports Daily.

Last night’s Major League Baseball all-star game, which saw the American League beat the National League 3-0, was rather dull.  At least until the 8th inning when Yankees closer Mariano Rivera was ushered out of the bullpen.

Baseball fans, especially those at Citi Field forgot that Rivera is a Yankee and cheered the moment for baseball’s all-time greatest closer.

638 regular season saves, 42 more in the playoffs and 4 during all-star competition.  In 9 all-star innings, Rivera’s ERA is a perfect 0.00.

As Rivera entered to his trademark walk-on song “Enter Sandman”, normally heard in the Bronx and not the Queens, boomed from the speakers and fans screamed with joy.  Even the players on both sides remained in the dugouts, to allow Rivera to soak up the nearly 2-minute standing ovation from the crowd all by himself.

It was a fitting all-star ending for Rivera, who is one of the great ambassadors of the game.

He thanked his teammates before the game for allowing him to come along for the ride.  By the time the night was over, it was the players thanking Rivera for letting them be a part of a thrilling scene.

Rivera won the MVP award, partly because there was no single moment that stood out in the AL victory.  But it’s fitting for Rivera to take home the hardware on this night.

In today’s version of the WRN Sports Daily, I take a look at the history and tradion of the Octopus, in regards to the role it plays at Detroit’s Joe Louis Arena, home of the Detroit Red Wings.

Did you ever wonder by Wings fans throw Octopus’ on the ice?  I did, and I finally decided to look into it and its meaning.

I also touch on some great baseball stories to start the 2013 season as well.

Enjoy!
