Packers season comes to an end in NFC Championship

January 25, 2021 By Bill Scott

After working all season to secure a first round playoff bye and home field advantage throughout the NFC playoffs, the Green Bay Packers season came to an end in the NFC Championship game, falling to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 31-26 on Sunday at Lambeau Field.

Tom Brady threw for 280 yards, three touchdowns and three interceptions and will play in his 10th Super Bowl in two weeks, this time on his own home field in Tampa.  Brady will be in search of his seventh Super Bowl title.  To get there, the Bucs had to beat three division winners, including the Packers on Sunday.

The Buccaneers (14-5) will face the Kansas City Chiefs (16-2) on Feb. 7 in Super Bowl 55.  No team has ever played in a Super Bowl on their own home field before.

The Packers (14-4) picked a bad time to play their worst game of the season, seeing their seven-game winning streak come to an end. [Read more…]

Packers beat Bears, clinch NFC’s No. 1 seed (AUDIO)

January 4, 2021 By Bill Scott

Matt LaFleur

The Green Bay Packers broke open a close game in the fourth quarter, knocking off the Chicago Bears 35-16 on Sunday at Soldier Field.  The Packers secured the top seed in the NFC, giving them a week off.  They won’t play again until the divisional playoff round either Jan. 16 or 17.

The Packers put 21 points up on the board in the first half and had what looked like another touchdown to start the third quarter, when Marquez Valdes-Scantling dropped what would have been a 53-yard touchdown pass.

After a slow start to the second half, Aaron Jones finally put the game away with a 4-yard touchdown run with 3:47 left.  On the very next possession, Davante Adams caught his 18th touchdown pass of the season, tying Sterling Sharpe’s franchise record.  He also broke Sharpe’s franchise record for single-season receptions.

Aaron Rodgers tossed four touchdown passes, giving him a career-best and franchise-record 48 for the season.  It likely put the wraps on Rodgers bid for his third NFL MVP award.  It also sets the Packers to host any NFC playoff games at [Read more…]

Packers Clinch NFC North Title With Win At Detroit (AUDIO)

December 14, 2020 By Bill Scott

Davante Adams

The Green Bay Packers wrapped up their second straight NFC North Division title with Sunday’s 31-24 win over the Detroit Lions at Ford Field.  The win also put the Packers in position to secure the top seed in the NFC, after the New Orleans Saints were upset  by the Philadelphia Eagles .  The Packers and Saints are tied for the top record in the conference at 10-3, but the Packers own the tiebreaker because of a week three win over the Saints in New Orleans.

Unlike last year, there’s no bye for the No. 2 seed this year, which is why the top seed in each conference is so important.  Only the top team in each league gets the opening week of the playoffs off.

Aaron Rodgers passed for 290 yards and three touchdowns, giving him 39 for the season, with a quarterback rating of 119.7.  Rodgers moved into fourth place in NFL history in games with three or more TD passes, with 73, passing former teammate Brett Favre.  He also passed and rushed for a touchdown in the same game for the 26th time in his career. Packers remain winless against winning teams (AUDIO)

November 23, 2020 By Bill Scott

Marquez Valdes-Scantling

For only the second time this season, the Green Bay Packers faced a team with a winning record and lost.  After scoring 28-points in the first half and leading 28-14 at halftime, the Packers (7-3) went on to lose to the Indianapolis Colts (7-3) 34-31 in overtime on Sunday.

The loss dropped the Packers out of the top position in the NFC playoff picture, still with six games left.

The Packers played arguably their best half of football this season in the first half, then played one of their worst in the second half.

Aaron Rodgers completed 27 of 38 for 311 yards, three touchdowns and one interception.  His favorite target, Davante Adams, caught seven passes for 106 yards and a score.  But the Packers ground attack managed just 66 yards on 18 carries with Aaron Jones finishing with 41 yards on 10 carries. Rodgers, Adams lead Packers rout (COVID Update)

November 6, 2020 By Bill Scott

Davante Adams

After falling twice to San Francisco last season, the Green Bay Packers rolled to a convincing 34-17 win over the shorthanded 49ers on Thursday night.

Aaron Rodgers completed 25 of 31 passes for 305 yards and four touchdowns, his fourth four-touchdown passing game this season.

Davante Adams had 10 catches for 173 yards and his league-leading eighth touchdown catch of the season and became the first player in NFL history with three games of 10 receptions for at least 150 yards in his team’s first eight games.  Adams missed two of those eight games because of injury.

Marquez Valdes-Scantling dropped his fifth pass of the season, but rebounded with a pair of touchdown receptions, including a 52-yarder.

Running back Aaron Jones returned to the lineup and started for the Packers.  Jones didn’t score, but he did rush for 58 yards on 15 carries and was a key part of the offensive game plan on the team’s opening drive.

That opening drive ended with a 36-yard touchdown pass from Aaron Rodgers to Davante Adams, giving the Packers [Read more…]

Packers receiver Lazard out indefinitely

October 2, 2020 By Bill Scott

WR Allen Lazard

Green Bay Packers wide receiver Allen Lazard had a career game last Sunday night (6 receptions for 146 yards and a touchdown).  He played the entire game and there was no indication afterwards in speaking with reporters that he had suffered an injury.  Yet, as ESPN first reported, Lazard underwent core muscle surgery and is out indefinitely.  The team listed him on their injury report Thursday with a core muscle injury.

Fellow receiver Davante Adams practiced on Thursday.  He said afterwards that he still doesn’t know if he’ll be available to play on Monday night against the Atlanta Falcons.

At the moment, the Packers have three other receivers on their active roster.  Marquez Valdes-Scantling, Darrius Shepherd and Malik Taylor.  Shepherd was signed off the practice squad last week. [Read more…]

Packers display plenty of offense in season opening win (AUDIO)

September 14, 2020 By Bill Scott

Packers beat Vikings in empty U.S. Bank Stadium

When the Green Bay Packers didn’t draft a wide receiver in the NFL Draft, many thought the Packers offense would be in trouble.  But a second year in Matt LaFleur’s system appears to be more important, at least after the first week of the new season.

Aaron Rodgers completed 32-of-44 for 364 yards and four touchdowns in the Packers 43-34 season opening win over the Minnesota Vikings at U.S. Bank Stadium on Sunday.  Two of the four touchdown receptions were to the Packers number-one receiver, Davante Adams.  Adams was targeted 17 times and caught 14 passes, tying Don Hutson’s 1942 franchise record of 14 receptions in a single game.

Rodgers also tossed touchdown passes to Marquez Valdes-Scantling and Allen Lazard, finishing with a quarterback rating of 127.5.  His four touchdown passes moved him past Eli Manning and into seventh place on the all-time list with 368.

It was a dominating offensive performance for the Packers, who racked up 522 total yards of offense in the win.  They [Read more…]

Packers wrap up training camp, head into regular season mode

August 31, 2020 By Bill Scott

The Green Bay Packers wrapped up Training Camp with a practice inside Lambeau Field on Sunday.  Packers coach Matt LaFleur used the 2 hour, 14 minute practice to get his team ready for the Sept. 13th season opener against the Minnesota Vikings.

Of the 100 or so plays run from scrimmage, the starters got 51 of them.  It would have been more, but a couple of players got nicked up late in the practice and the coach decided to pull the plug.

“They’ve got to realize that two weeks from today we’re going to be playing our first game,” LaFleur said.  “So, they’ve got to stack consistent practices on top of each other.”

The Packers begin regular season planning and practice this week.  Players get a workout on Monday, an off day on Tuesday and won’t practice again until Wednesday.  They’ll spend the rest of this week giving GM Brian Gutekunst as much [Read more…]

Packers in the market for a wide receivers coach

January 30, 2020 By Bill Scott

Davante Adams

The Green Bay Packers are looking for a wide receivers coach after head coach Matt LaFleur fired Alvis Whitted last week.  The move was first reported by the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

Davante Adams led the Packers with 83 catches for 997 yards and five touchdowns, despite missing four games with a turf toe injury.  But no other receiver performed with any consistency and wideouts Marquez Valdes-Scantling and Geronimo Allison both took a step backwards.

Running backs Aaron Jones and Jamaal Williams had 49 and 39 receptions respectively and tight end Jimmy Graham added 38 catches.  All three had more catches than the number two receiver, which by the end of the season became Allen Lazard with 35.

Valdes-Scantling followed a solid rookie season with just 26 receptions for 452 yards and two touchdowns.  By the end of the season, Aaron Rodgers hardly made an effort to throw him the ball.  In fact, Valdes-Scantling just just five catches over the last nine regular-season games.

Whitted is the second assistant coach to leave the Packers coaching staff.  Jason Simmons left to take a job with the Carolina Panthers.  The Packers replaced Simmons by hiring former Minnesota Vikings defensive backs coach Jerry Gray.

Kumerow could see more opportunities with Packers

December 17, 2019 By Bill Scott

Jake Kumerow

Green Bay Packers wide receiver Jake Kumerow has caught just 11 passes on 18 targets this season.  But those 11 receptions have added up to 212 yards.  That’s a 19.3 yard per catch average which ranks number one on the team.

Kumerow makes big plays.  His latest came Sunday on a 49-yard catch and run.  It eventually led to a Aaron Jones touchdown run.

With other receivers (Marquez Valdes-Scantling and Geronimo Allison) struggling at times, coach Matt LaFleur was asked Monday what is it going to take to get Kumerow involved more.

“We have to make sure we get him on the field,” LaFleur said.  “So I think you’ll see more of him as we move forward.” [Read more…]
