Badgers move into quarterfinals of Big Ten Women’s Tournament

The Wisconsin Badger women’s basketball team came from 12 points down in the second half to knock off Ohio State 73-63 in the second round of the Big Ten Tournament at Bankers Life Fieldhouse in Indianapolis.

Seniors Marsha Howard and Kelly Karlis led the charge.  Howard had her tenth double-double of the season with a game-high 24 points and 11 rebounds, while Karlis scored a career-high 23 points in the win.  Karlis was a perfect 4 for 4 from three-point range and 6 of 6 from the free throw line.

Wisconsin (15-17) got off to a slow start, trailing Ohio State (14-14) by 10 at halftime (32-22).  But the Badgers got hot and outscored the Buckeyes 51-31 in the second half.

In the fourth quarter, the Badgers shot 80 percent (4-5) from 3-point range and 85.7 percent (12-14) from the free-throw line, outscoring the Buckeyes 30-17.

The Badgers also committed just five turnovers for the entire game, advancing to the Big Ten Tournament quarterfinals for the first time since 2013.

The Badgers continue Big Ten Tournament play against fourth-seeded Michigan in the quarterfinals on Friday.  Game time is set for 1:30 p.m.

Badger women close regular season with loss at Michigan

The Wisconsin Badger women’s basketball team trailed Michigan by as many as 26 points in the third quarter and closed the Big Ten regular season with a 59-59 loss to the Wolverines on Sunday in Ann Arbor.

Wisconsin (13-17, 4-14 Big Ten) shot just 34.5 percent from the field.  Sophomore Niya Beverley led the Badgers with 12 points and freshman Imani Lewis had 11.  Senior Marsha Howard had 12 rebounds as the Badgers out-rebounded the Wolverines 37-32.

Michigan (20-10, 11-7) clinched the fourth seed in the Big Ten Tournament with the victory.

The Badgers will be the No. 13 seed in the 2019 Big Ten Tournament, taking on No. 12-seed Penn State on Wednesday at 12:30 p.m. CT.  The winner advances to play the fifth-seeded team on Thursday at 1:30 p.m. CT.  All games will be held at the Bankers Life Fieldhouse in Indianapolis.

Turnovers hurt Lady Badgers at Rutgers

Freshman Imani Lewis, who grew up an hour south of the RAC in Willingboro, New Jersey, poured in 18 points but it wasn’t enough to prevent her Wisconsin Badgers from falling at Rutgers 73-53 in Big Ten women’s action.

Wisconsin (13-15, 4-12 Big Ten) got off to a slow start and trailed 17-11 after the first quarter.

Rutgers (19-8, 11-5) full court press started to take its toll in the second quarter and the Scarlet Knights increased their lead to 40-23 at halftime and the Badgers were never in it in the second half.

Senior Marsha Howard added 16 points for the Badgers.

The two teams combined for 44 turnovers, 24 of them by the Badgers.  That is the worst turnover output for the season.

The Badgers return to Madison for Senior Night to take on Ohio State on Thursday at the Kohl Center.

Badgers hold off Illini comeback

Avenging an earlier season loss, the Wisconsin women’s basketball team held off a last-minute Illinois comeback Wednesday night at the Kohl Center.  The Badgers downed the Illini 75-67, earning their fourth Big Ten Conference victory of the season.

Wisconsin (13-14, 4-11 Big Ten) senior Marsha Howard led the way for the Badgers with a double-double, 27 points and 10 rebounds.

Sophomore Niya Beverley added 14 points, Junior Suzanne Gilreath had 11 and Freshman Imani Lewis had a game high 12 rebounds.  The Badgers owned the advantage on the boards 42-27.

Wisconsin shot 48.1 percent (25-52) from the field, including 6-14 (42.9 percent) from beyond the arc.

Wisconsin outscored the Illini 28-18 in the paint and 20-9 from the bench.

Next up for the Badgers is a trip to New Brunswick, New Jersey to take on Rutgers Monday night for the first time this season.

Badger women upset #24 Michigan State

The Wisconsin women’s basketball team knocked off a ranked opponent for the first time since the 2013 season, rolling past #24 Michigan State 79-62 on Thursday  night at the Kohl Center.

Wisconsin (12-13, 3-10 Big Ten) set the tone of the game early, jumping out to a 8-0 lead less than four minutes in.  The Badgers used the three-pointer to outscore Michigan State (17-7, 7-6 Big Ten), 22-8, in the first quarter.

The Badgers led 46-27 at the half and would get no closer than 17 points the rest of the night.

Senior Marsha Howard had a game-high 28 points to lead the Badgers.  Fellow senior Kelly Karlis recorded her second career double-double with 13 points and a team-high 10 rebounds.

The Badgers forced 16 turnovers and scored 20 points off of Spartan giveaways.

Wisconsin heads to Columbus, Ohio, on Sunday to face the Ohio State Buckeyes.

Marquette women remain unbeaten in Big East

The Marquette women’s basketball team held off a late rally to knock off the DePaul Blue Demons 93-87.  Allazia Blockton scored 25 points to lead the Golden Eagles (19-3, 10-0 Big East) to their 10th straight Big East win.

The 9th ranked Golden Eagles led by 13 in the third quarter, but DePaul chipped away at the deficit and tied the game with 3:42 left in the fourth on a layup by Kelly Campbell.  Blockton gave Marquette a three-point lead with her basket and the foul with 2:01 left.

Marquette overcame foul trouble in the fourth quarter and Erika Davenport knocked down two free throws with 1:14 left to give the Golden Eagles an 88-83 advantage.  Danielle King had 18 points for Marquette and Amani Wilborn added 17.

Badger women fall at home

Senior Marsha Howard scored 30 points, but Wisconsin still lost to Michigan 76-70 on Sunday at the Kohl Center.

The Badgers (11-12, 2-9 Big Ten) scored just eight points in the second quarter and trailed 32-22 at halftime.

Freshman Imani Lewis also added 15 for the Badgers.

Cold shooting leads to Badger women’s basketball loss

Despite leading after the first quarter, the Wisconsin women’s basketball team wasn’t able to hold on to the advantage, falling to Northwestern, 72-46, on Sunday afternoon in Evanston, Illinois.

Wisconsin (10-9, 1-6 BIG) came out hot in the first quarter using a 7-0 run with 3:06 left in the period, making it an early eight-point game, 15-7.  The Badgers scored 12 of their 15 points in the paint.

Northwestern turned the corner late in the first and early in the second quarter, using a 15-0 run to take a 22-15 lead with 4:11 left in the half.  The Wildcats held the Badgers to just two points in the second quarter as senior Marsha Howard connected on UW’s only basket at the 3:34 mark in the second quarter.

Howard and junior Suzanne Gilreath led the Badgers with 11 points, but the Badgers shot a season-low 24.6 percent (16-65) from the field, including just 12.5 percent (3-24) from 3-point range.

The Badgers return to the Kohl Center for a two-game home stand beginning with a re-match against Penn State on Thursday night.

Badger women fall to Arkansas but win Challenge in Music City

The Wisconsin Badger women’s basketball team lost for the first time this season, falling to Arkansas 69-68.  But the Badgers were still crowned champions of the Challenge in the Music City Music Row Bracket with a 2-1 record.  UW won the tie-breaker by giving up the fewest points in the tournament.

Senior Marsha Howard was named the tournament MVP and junior Kendra Van Leeuwen was named to the all-tournament team.

Wisconsin (6-1) got off to a slow start in the first quarter, falling behind 14-7.  The Badgers took their first lead in the second quarter at 24-22.

Wisconsin’s biggest lead came in the third quarter at 50-35 with 4:12 left in the third.

The Badgers trailed by one with 11 seconds left and had a chance to win, but they turned it over in the final seconds.

Freshman Imani Lewis led the Badgers with 13 points and 12 rebounds.

Wisconsin returns home on Wednesday night, hosting Duke at 8 p.m. at the Kohl Center as part of the Big Ten/ACC Challenge.

Badger women off to 4-0 start

The Wisconsin women’s basketball team has opened the season 4-0, knocking off IUPUI 65-64 in overtime on Monday night at the Kohl Center.  It’s the first 4-0 start for the Badgers since the start of the 2006-07 season.

Down by one, 64-63, senior Marsha Howard’s fast break lay-in with three seconds left in overtime to make the game-winning shot.

The Badgers shot 38.6 percent from the field and 50 percent (5-10) from the 3-point line.

The Badgers outrebounded the Jaguars 47-38.

IUPUI was led by Macee Williams with 31 points and seven rebounds.

Wisconsin travels to Nashville this weekend for the Challenge in the Music City.  Wisconsin takes on Pittsburgh, Tennessee State and Arkansas in the round-robin tournament.
