Brewers bang out 17-hits in win over Cardinals

September 9, 2016 By Bill Scott

Brewers logoThe Milwaukee Brewers are relegated to playing spoilers in the final month of the baseball season.  They’ve been playing the role well the last few days.

After a pair of wins to end their series with the Cubs at Miller Park, the Brewers marched into St. Louis and banged out 17 hits in a 12-5 win over the Cardinals at Busch Stadium.

Cardinals lefty Jaime Garcia entered last night’s game with a 2-1 record and 1.23 ERA against the Brewers this season.  He was 11-5 with a 2.61 ERA in 20 career outings.

Last night, the Brewers got to Garcia for five runs on eight hits in 3 2/3 innings. [Read more…]

Brewers losing skid reaches six games (AUDIO)

August 31, 2016 By Bill Scott

Randal Grichuk’s RBI single in the 10th inning gave the St. Louis Cardinals a 2-1 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers on Tuesday night at Miller Park.

It’s the sixth straight loss for the Brewers, which tied a season high.

Brewers logoThe loss goes to reliever Corey Knebel, who failed to do his job for the second straight night.  Knebel fell to 0-2 on the season.

The Brewers wasted an outstanding performance from starter Wily Peralta, who allowed one run on three hits while striking out ten in seven innings of work.  His ERA dropped from 6.68 to 5.53.

The Cardinals beat the Brewers for the 11th time in 14 games this season. [Read more…]

Guerra leads Brewers to shutout win over Nationals

July 5, 2016 By Bill Scott

Junior Guerra

Junior Guerra

Junior Guerra continues to be one of the best stories of the 2016 Major League Baseball season.

After the Brewers dropped three straight games in St. Louis, Guerra took the mound at Nationals Park on Monday morning and tossed 7 1/3 innings of two-hit ball in a 1-0 win over the Washington Nationals on Independence Day.

Guerra walked two and struck out seven in blanking the Nationals and ending the Brewers three-game losing streak.

Guerra improved to 6-1 on the season, lowering his ERA to 2.93.

Martin Maldonado gave the Brewers their only run with a long home run to left in the fifth inning.  Jeremy Jeffress came on to record the final two outs in the eighth, then set the Nationals down in the 9th for his 22nd save in 23 tries.

The Brewers improved to 17-30 all time on the fourth of July.  It was the second time they played in Washington D.C. on that holiday, falling to the Nationals 8-5 back in 2013.

The Brewers will send Zach Davies to the mound in game two of the series tonight.

Brewers swept in St. Louis

July 4, 2016 By Bill Scott

Brewers logoThe Milwaukee Brewers and St. Louis Cardinals were interrupted by three rain delays totaling two hours and 29 minutes.  When the day was done, it was the Cardinals who prevailed, hanging on for a 9-8 win at Busch Stadium.

The Cardinals entered the series with a seven-game home losing streak.  They came out of it with a three-game winning streak.

Chase Anderson made it through just 4 1/3 innings and this time, the Brewers bullpen couldn’t hold off the opposition.

Milwaukee led early, but the Cardinals would explode for seven runs, including Stephen Piscotty’s grand slam in the sixth off of fellow reliever Blaine Boyer. [Read more…]

Nationals end 7-game slide, edge Brewers (AUDIO)

June 27, 2016 By Bill Scott

Brewers logoWith Stephen Strasburg scratched before the game because of a back injury, the Washington Nationals handed the ball to Tanner Roark to make the start against the Milwaukee Brewers in Sunday’s series finale and he delivered.

Roark (7-5) allowed seven hits and a walk while striking out seven, helping the Nationals end a seven game losing streak.

The Brewers had their chances, but finished 0 for 10 with runners in scoring position.  Starter Jimmy Nelson, who has struggled in the month of June, still didn’t have his best stuff but was able to pitch out of trouble.

Jacob Barnes (0-1) pitches a scoreless sixth, but Jose Lobaton homered off Barnes to break the scoreless tie and give the Nationals a 1-0 lead.  Lobaton’s home run is the 100th in 76 games for the Nationals this season.  That is a franchise best.  [Read more…]

Cardinals use home run ball to beat Brewers

September 17, 2015 By Bill Scott

Brewers logoTommy Pham clubbed a pair of two-run homers and added a triple, helping the St. Louis Cardinals knock off the Milwaukee Brewers 5-4 at Miller Park on Wednesday night.

Pham’s two home runs came off of Brewers starter Wily Peralta, who also surrendered a solo home run to Matt Carpenter.  Peralta lasted just four innings, falling to 5-9 with a 4.41 earned run average.

The Cardinals improved to 10-4 against the Brewers this season and 27-10 in their last 37 games played at Miller Park.

The Brewers scored four times in the fourth inning to make it close.  Martin Maldonado clubbed a three run home run in the frame, his first home run since May 31.  But the Brewers managed only two hits over the last five innings.

Jaime Garcia gave up all four runs in six-and-a-third innings for the win.  He improved to 9-5.  Trevor Rosenthal earned his 45th save.

The Brewers will try to avoid a sweep when they face the Cardinals again tonight.

Do what you have to do to win the game today and worry about tomorrow, tomorrow.  That is the situation the Milwaukee Brewers found themselves in on Sunday in the series finale against the Arizona Diamondbacks at Miller Park.

The Brewers and Diamondbacks played the longest game (in terms of time) in Miller Park history and knocked off the Arizona Diamondbacks 7-6 in 17 innings.  Martin Maldonado, who caught all 17-innings, clubbed a one-out home run to allow the Brewers to walk off a winner.

The game went 5-hours and 49 minutes and the Brewers needed nine pitchers to help snap their seven-game losing streak. [Read more…]

Maldonado delivers on Mothers Day (AUDIO)

May 11, 2015 By Bill Scott

Martin Maldonado

Martin Maldonado delivered a Mothers Day moment at Miller Park on Sunday.

Not only did Maldonado club a home run in the 7th inning, but he singled over the Cubs’ drawn-in outfield with one out in the 11th inning to give the Brewers a 3-2 win and a second straight victory over the Cubs.

With the bases loaded, Maldonado knew he needed to get the ball in the air.  The Cubs had already brought their left fielder, Chris Coghlan into the infield.  Maldonado drove a fastball from Cubs reliever Jason Motte to right and over the head of Jorge Soler for what went in the books as an RBI single. 1st inning outburst is enough for Peralta in Brewers win

May 7, 2015 By Bill Scott

Wily Peralta

Wily Peralta

The Milwaukee Brewers erupted for five runs in the first inning last night and they held on for a 6-3 win over the Los Angeles Dodgers at Miller Park.

Entering Wednesday’s game, the Brewers had scored just five first-inning runs in their previous 27 games.  Last night, they scored five runs in the first and it was like Christmas in the month of May for Wily Peralta.

Peralta entered the game with an 0-4 record in his first five starts.  But he’s pitched better than an 0-4 record.  He got little run support.  But last night was different.

Scooter Gennett and Adam Lind clubbed two run homers in the first and Martin Maldonado added a run scoring single to make it 5-0.

Peralta went to work from there.  He allowed three runs (2 earned) on seven hits while striking out six in eight innings to earn his first win of the season. [Read more…]
