Badgers open Big Ten men’s tournament play today

March 1, 2018 By Bill Scott

The Wisconsin Badgers are excited about their ability to start over in the Big Ten Tournament at Madison Square Garden in New York today.

The Badgers fell to Big Ten regular season champion Michigan State on Sunday but played well.  They enter the tournament having won 4 of their last 6 games.

UW (14-17) is the 9th seed and will open up against 8th seeded Maryland (19-12) at 11 a.m.  The winner gets a date with the Spartans at 11 a.m. on Friday.

The Badgers lost their only meeting with the Terrapins, 68-63 on Feb. 4 in College Park.

The Badgers weren’t a good basketball team early on.  They were adjusting to injuries and their young lineup needed to gain valuable experience.  Players they were counting on to produce weren’t producing.  But things have come together in the final few weeks and the players believe they can make a playoff run.

It will take four straight wins to earn a spot in the NCAA Tournament Field for the 20th straight season.  Without it, the 19-year string of NCAA Tournament appearances will come to an end.

The odds of UW winning four straight games aren’t very good.  But the players believe there’s a chance and that just wouldn’t be the case a couple of months ago.

NBA Draft Combine starts today

May 11, 2016 By Bill Scott

Nigel Hayes

Nigel Hayes

Wisconsin’s Nigel Hayes and Marquette’s Henry Ellenson will try to put their best foot forward for the pro scouts over the next several days.  They’ll join about 70 other players who were invited to the NBA Draft Combine which opens today in Chicago.

Ellenson has already signed with an agent, which means he can’t change his mind and return to school.

Hayes did not sign with an agent, which means he’ll have ten days after the combine ends to decide if he wants to continue with his pro plays, or return to the Madison for his senior season with the Badgers.

Former Whitefish Bay Dominican standout Diamond Stone of Maryland is also at the combine, in advance of the June 23rd NBA Draft.

Wisconsin and Maryland to face off in football

October 19, 2012 By Bill Scott

The Wisconsin Badger football team has agreed with Maryland to play a home-and-home series with the Terps in 2020 and 2021.

Camp Randall Stadium

The two teams will square off for the first time in history in 2020 at Camp Randall Stadium in Madison.  The following season, the Badgers will travel to Byrd Stadium in College Park, Md.

With the implementation of a playoff system in college football starting in 2014, teams are being forced to step up and strengthen their non-conference schedule.  It also helps those schools to recruit nationally.

The last time UW faced an ACC opponent was a 20-14 win over Miami in the 2009 Champs Sports Bowl.

Wisconsin will now face at least one BCS conference opponent in each of the next nine seasons.  In addition to the Maryland series, UW has home-and-home series with Washington State (2014 and 2015), Virginia Tech (2016 and 2017) and Washington (2018 and 2019).  The Badgers will also face BYU three times in the next sox seasons (2013, 2017 and 2018).
