Carlino’s three lifts Marquette to victory

January 15, 2015 By Bill Scott

MarquetteGoldenEagles2It wasn’t pretty, but the Marquette Golden Eagles prevailed, knocking off Creighton 53-52 in Big East action at the BMO Harris Bradley Center on Wednesday night.

Matt Carlino’s three-pointer with 11.2 seconds left put the Golden Eagles up by 1-point and then watched as the Blue Jays got a good shot off but missed.

Carlino finished with a game-high 19 points, including 11 in the second half.  Duane Wilson was the only other Marquette player to score in the second half, collecting 14 of his 17 points after the halftime break.

Creighton missed 15 straight shots and went without a field goal for 9:33 in the first half.  Marquette used the dry spell to open a 14-point lead.  But the Blue Jays found their way and fought back to take the lead.  They were up by 4-points with two minutes left to play.

Marquette improved to 10-6 overall and 2-2 in the Big East.  Creighton meanwhile saw its losing streak hit six games.

D’Vauntes Smith-Rivera had 15 points and Jabril Trawick added 13 for the Hoyas (10-4, 2-1 Big East).

Matt Carlino had 16 points and Luke Fischer battled foul trouble to chip in with 13 points for the Golden Eagles (9-6, 1-2 Big East).

Carlino leads Marquette past Georgia Tech

November 28, 2014 By Bill Scott

MarquetteGoldenEagles2Former BYU shooting ace Matt Carlino knocked down 8 of 14 shots from distance to lead the Marquette Golden Eagles to a 72-70 win over Georgia Tech in the opening round of the Orlando Classic on Thursday night.

His 8 three-pointers were one short of the school record.

“Coach called me out after the NJIT game and he just said, ‘You need to step up,'” said Carlino, who scored one point on 0-for-5 shooting in Monday’s 62-57 win over New Jersey Institute of Technology.  “I had to.  We weren’t going to win, really.”

Marquette trailed 31-29 at halftime.

Carlino finished without any field goals inside the arc (0 for 4) but went 14 for 16 at the free throw line.   Marquette hit 23 of 32 as a team at the free throw line.

The Golden Eagles move into the semifinals tonight, facing No. 20 Michigan State at 8 p.m.  The Spartans advanced by beating Rider 77-45.
