Brewers cough up late lead, fall to Twins (AUDIO)

August 8, 2017 By Bill Scott

The Milwaukee Brewers took advantage of some sloppy play by the Minnesota Twins and took a 4-3 lead into the 7th inning at Target Field.  Unfortunately, the Brewers then got sloppy and coughed up the lead, falling 5-4 in their series opener.

In the seventh, Oliver Drake walked leadoff man Eduardo Escobar, who scored when Eddie Rosario’s deep line drive to right was misjudged by Domingo Santana as the tying run scored on Rosario’s double.  After Rosario was bunted to third, Drake balked in the go-ahead run and the Twins then held on for the victory.

Brewers starter Brent Suter was removed after just four innings, but lefty Josh Hader struggled with his command.  Hader walked three batters in the fifth and hit Jason Castro to lead off the sixth.

Keon Broxton drove in a pair of runs, with a long home run into the second deck in left field in the third and a run scoring double in the fourth. [Read more…]

The Milwaukee Brewers finally won a series from the St. Louis Cardinals, taking two of three with a 2-1 win at Miller Park on Thursday.  Prior to Thursday, the Cardinals had won 13 straight series at Miller Park dating to July 2012.

Matt Garza, who came off the disabled list after recovering from a lower leg strain, allowed just one run over 5 2/3 innings to pick up the win.  Jacob Barnes, Anthony Swarzak and Corey Knebel, who notched his 20th save, finished up for the Brewers.

Garza allowed Greg Garcia’s RBI single in the fifth inning, one of only four hits he allowed on the day.  That tied the game 1-1, but the Brewers bounced back in the bottom half to retake the lead, collecting three straight two-out singles from Travis Shaw, Hernan Perez and Keon Broxton to put the Brewers on top for good.

Broxton also took away a home run in the second inning from Jose Martinez, leaping high over the wall in right center to snatch a would be  home run. [Read more…]

Brewers drop series finale to Phillies

July 17, 2017 By Bill Scott

Philadelphia’s Nick Williams clubbed a 7th inning grand slam off of left-handed reliever Tyler Webb to send the Phillies to a 5-2 win over the Milwaukee Brewers in the series finale at Miller Park on Sunday.

With the loss, the Brewers saw their lead over the Chicago Cubs in the NL Central fall to 4 1/2 games before heading on a 10-game road trip that starts in Pittsburgh on Monday night and continues in Philadelphia and Washington.

Rookie Brett Phillips gave the Brewers a 2-1 lead in the fifth while pinch hitting for starting pitcher Matt Garza.  Phillips drove a 1-0 pitch from Phillies starter Jeremy Hellickson out to right for his first career home run and a 2-1 Brewers lead.

Garza finished his day allowing one run on three hits.

The Brewers had chances in both the eighth and ninth innings but came up empty.

The Brewers still took two of three from the Phillies and open a series in Pittsburgh on Monday night against the Pirates.  Brent Suter (1-1, 2.96) pitches for the Brewers.  The Pirates will counter with right-hander Chad Kuhl (3-6, 4.96).

The Milwaukee Brewers jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the first two innings, then held off the St. Louis Cardinals 7-6 at Busch Stadium on Wednesday night.  The two teams sat through a pair of rain delays that totaled 1 hour 50 minutes.

Matt Garza was reinstated from the disabled list earlier in the day and was able to get through five innings for his third win.  He was staked to a big early lead.

Eric Thames two-run homer made it 2-0 in the first.  Eric Sogard’s two-run double in the second made it 4-0, then Thames doubled in Sogard and Travis Shaw singled in Thames to make it 6-0.

The Cardinals had an answer for Garza and the Brewers in the bottom of the second, scoring four runs.  But Garza and Cardinals starter Mike Leake both settled down from there.  Leake left after six innings, trailing 6-4.

The Brewers added an insurance run in the 7th when Domingo Santana doubled and Hernan Perez singled to right with two outs to drive him in. [Read more…]

The Toronto Blue Jays clubbed four home runs, three off of Milwaukee starter Matt Garza, on the way to a 8-4 win over the Brewers at Miller Park.

The Blue Jays swept the two game series, sending the Brewers to their third straight defeat.  Milwaukee dropped to 25-21 with their lead over the Cardinals and Cubs atop the NL Central Division down to a half game.

Matt Garza set down the Blue Jays first nine hitters before the home runs came.  Leadoff hitter Kevin Pillar led off the fourth inning with a solo home run.  Two batters later, Jose Bautista homered off the scoreboard in center.

Toronto busted the game open in the sixth with two more home run.  Devon Travis led off the inning with a home run to center, the third of the game off of Garza.

Oliver Drake came on in relief, walking Chris Coghlan to lead the bases before serving up a grand slam to [Read more…]

Brewers drop series opener against Toronto

May 24, 2017 By Bill Scott

The Milwaukee Brewers dropped back-to-back games for the first time since May 5-6, falling to the Toronto Blue Jays 4-3 in their series opener on Tuesday night at Miller Park.

The Blue Jays scored a pair of runs in the second inning and twice more in the fifth off of Brewers starter Jimmy Nelson.

The two run second inning could have been worse for the Brewers.  Toronto loaded the bases with nobody out but Nelson wiggled out of the jam without any major damage.

In the fifth inning, Jose Bautista reached on a single with two outs, then Kendrys Morales clubbed a long home run to center field to give Toronto a 4-0 lead. [Read more…]

Brewers perched at the top of NL Central

May 18, 2017 By Bill Scott

The Milwaukee Brewers are supposed to be rebuilding.  Nobody knows how long this recent streak of success will last, but for now, the Brewers are at the top of the National League Central Division, looking down at the other four teams.

Jett Bandy’s ninth-inning RBI single was the highlight of a two-run rally and the Brewers beat the San Diego Padres 3-1 at Petco Park on Wednesday night.

The Brewers won for the eighth time in the last 10 games to climb five games over .500 at 23-18.  It’s the first time they’ve reached that mark since September of 2014.

Travis Shaw returned to the Brewers lineup after missing two games with a finger injury and immediately paid dividends by driving in Eric Sogard with a rbi single to center.  That would be it until the ninth inning for the Brewers offense. [Read more…]

Brewers end April with .500 record thanks to Domingo Santana

May 1, 2017 By Bill Scott

The Milwaukee Brewers reached the month of May with a .500 record, and avoided a sweep at the hands of the Braves, thanks to the efforts of Domingo Santana. The young right fielder hit two home runs and accounted for all of Milwaukee’s runs in a 4-3 defeat of the Braves at Miller Park on Sunday.

Santana, who had been hitting .169 coming into the weekend series, crushed a solo home run off the video board in deep center to tie the game at one in the fifth. An inning later, Santana snuck his second homer of the day, a three-run shot, over the wall in right-center to hand the Brewers a 4-2 lead. After also hitting a home run in Friday’s loss to Atlanta, the 24-year-old Dominican now has five on the season.

Milwaukee finishes the season’s first month at 13-13, a win total that equals the number of April wins in the last two seasons combined.

The win also saw starter Matt Garza pick up his first win of the season in just his season start since opening the year on the disabled list. [Read more…]

Thames continues to pound Cincinnati pitching (AUDIO)

April 25, 2017 By Bill Scott

Eric Thames

The Milwaukee Brewers ended a three-game losing streak, rolling to a 11-7 win over the Cincinnati Reds at Miller Park.

Eric Thames clubbed home runs in his first two at bats last night, giving him 10 for the season and seven in five games against the Reds.

With five games left in the month of April, Thames 10 home runs tied the franchise best mark set by Carlos Lee in 2006 and his 24 runs scored surpassed the record of 23 held by Paul Molitor (1987) and Rickie Weeks (2008).

Hernan Perez also clubbed a three run homer in the first inning and added a RBI double in the third.

Reds starter Amir Garrett entered the game with a 1.83 ERA in three starts, but the Brewers got to him for 10 runs (nine earned) in 3 1/3 innings.

The game also marked the return to the rotation for Matt Garza for the Brewers.  Garza allowed four runs in four innings but left with a high pitch count and not eligible for the win. [Read more…]

Wainwright leads Cardinals past Brewers

April 22, 2017 By Bill Scott

Adam Wainwright had struggled to an 0-3 start for the St. Louis Cardinals.  He started his turn-around in Milwaukee last night and held his own cause with the bat in a 6-3 Cardinals victory over the Brewers.

Wainwright clubbed a two run home run in the third inning, then added a two run single in the fourth, driving in four of the Cardinals six runs.

On the mound, Wainwright held the Brewers to a pair of runs on six hits while striking out nine over five innings.

Wily Peralta (3-1), off to a 3-0 start this season, departed after four innings, surrendering all six runs on nine hits.  He walked only one, but failed to record a strikeout. [Read more…]
