Brewers claim Ex-Rays utility player

April 6, 2017 By Bill Scott

The Milwaukee Brewers claimed utility player Nick Franklin off waivers from the Tampa Bay Rays on Wednesday.  He’s expected to join the team on Friday as the Brewers open a three-game series against the Chicago Cubs at Miller Park.  They’ll have to cut one player from their 25-man roster by then.

To make room on the 40-man roster, the Brewers designated reliever Michael Blazek for assignment.

In 60 games last season, the switch-hitting Franklin hit .270 with six homers and 26 RBI.

Franklin was a first-round draft pick in 2009 by Seattle out of high school. [Read more…]

Villar leads Brewers to victory in Arlington

September 27, 2016 By Bill Scott

Brewers logoInfielder Jonathan Villar started the final week of baseball’s regular season with pair of home runs, leading the Milwaukee Brewers to a 8-3 win over the Texas Rangers at Globe Life Park.

With five games left, Villar needs just two homers and one stolen base to reach 20 home runs and 60 stolen bases for the season.  The last player to reach the 20-60 level was Ricky Henderson for the Oakland A’s in 1990.

Villar also doubled to finish 3 for 4 on the night, helping the Brewers finish 11-7 in interleague play.

Matt Garza picked up his sixth win (6-8), pitching six innings and allowing six hits, three runs and a walk while striking out three.

The Rangers have already clinched a playoff spot, but they’re trying to secure home field advantage with Boston in the American League playoffs.

Jimmy Nelson pitches game two of the series tonight.

Pirates grab series opener in Milwaukee

September 21, 2016 By Bill Scott

Brewers logoThe Pittsburgh Pirates kept their slight NL Wildcard Playoff hopes alive, marching into Milwaukee and knocking off the Brewers 6-3 in their series opener at Miller Park.  It’s the fifth straight win for the Pirates at Miller Park.

The Pirates got to Brewers starter Matt Garza for five runs on eight hits in just four innings.

The Brewers had some chances to get back in the game, but fell short.  Brewers first baseman Chris Carter hit a hard ground ball to Pirate third baseman Jung Ho Kang in the fifth that knocked him backwards.  As he was falling down, Kang managed to get a throw off to second which turned into a double play.  The Brewers managed to score a run on the play, trailing 5-3 but the Pirates bullpen did the job the rest of the way.

Garza had been pitching better of late, but didn’t have his good stuff last night.

The victory moved the Pirates back to .500 (75-75).

The Brewers meanwhile still need one victory away from surpassing last year’s total.  They need to win twice in the last five home games to produce a winning record at home.

Jimmy Nelson (8-14) pitches game two of the series tonight.

Sloppy defense leads to Brewers defeat

September 14, 2016 By Bill Scott

Brewers logoA pair of costly errors allowed the Cincinnati Reds to score four runs in the third inning and go on to beat the Milwaukee Brewers 6-4 at Great American Ball Park on Tuesday night.

The Brewers have now lost the first two games in the series and added to their major league leading total of errors, which  now totals 122.

Matt Garza (5-7) was the victim of the poor defensive outing, working a solid five innings but taking the loss.  Four of the five runs that Garza allowed were unearned, which means his ERA for the season fell to 4.22.

Offensively, Keon Broxton and Jonathan Villar clubbed solo homers early on.  Chris Carter clubbed his 34th of the season, a two run shot in the ninth to draw the Brewers to within two runs.  But Broxton and Orlando Arcia were retired to end the game.

Junior Guerra pitches the series finale as the Brewers try to avoid a sweep tonight.
