Villar powers Brewers past Cubs in series finale

September 8, 2016 By Bill Scott

Brewers logoJonathan Villar clubbed a pair of home runs, one from each side of the plate, powering the Milwaukee Brewers to a 2-1 win over the Chicago Cubs at Miller Park on Wednesday night.

Villar’s second homer came in the eighth inning to put the Brewers in front.  The Cubs had one final chance in the ninth and Anthony Rizzo, who had already homered for the Cubs earlier, sent another deep shot to center that was headed out of the park when center fielder Keon Broxton jumped and robbed Rizzo of the potential game tying blast.

Earlier this season, it was Rizzo who stood on the wall in foul territory and reached into the stands to rob Broxton.  The Brewers center fielder returned the favor last night. [Read more…]

Brewers end six-game losing streak (AUDIO)

September 1, 2016 By Bill Scott

Brewers logoAfter several close losses, the Milwaukee Brewers finally found a way to reward a starting pitcher for a job well done.

Matt Garza held the St. Louis Cardinals to a run on three hits over seven-innings to help the Brewers pull out a 3-1 victory at Miller Park, ending a 6-game slide.

Garza coaxed a walk from Cardinals rookie starter Luke Weaver in the third.  Jonathan Villar followed with a hit to left and Kirk Nieuwenhuis finished the rally with a three-run home run to right to put the Brewers on top 3-0.

The Cardinals only run came on a Yadier Molina solo home run in the fourth. [Read more…]

Errors costly in Brewers loss to Pirates (AUDIO)

August 27, 2016 By Bill Scott

Brewers logoAfter losing nine straight games at Miller Park, the Pittsburgh Pirates knocked off the  Milwaukee Brewers for the second straight night, 5-3.

Two Jonathan Villar errors led to a five-run sixth inning, which was capped off by Jordy Mercer’s first career grand slam as the Pirates jumped out to a 5-0 lead.

Rookie Brewers shortstop Orlando Arcia’s three-run  homer in the bottom of the sixth, the first of his career, would account for all of the Brewers scoring.

All five of the Pirates runs were unearned, but it’s little consolation for Matt Garza and the Brewers.  Garza had Mercer with an 0-2 count, then he caught too much of the plate with the next pitch and Mercer made him pay. [Read more…]

Brewers offense awakens in win over Braves (AUDIO)

August 12, 2016 By Bill Scott

Brewers logoThe Milwaukee Brewers have struggled to score runs over the last few games.  They took out their frustrations on Thursday and put a  thumping on the Atlanta Braves 11-3 at Miller Park.

Chris Carter, Hernan Perez and Scooter Gennett all homered for the Brewers as they scored at least one run in every inning.  It’s the first time in the Brewers 47-year franchise history that they have scored in every inning in which they  batted in a nine-inning game.  The Brewers are only the eighth major-league team in the expansion era (since 1961) to accomplish the feat.

Veteran pitcher Matt Garza benefited from the Brewers offense, who pitched six innings and improved to 4-4.  The Brewers have scored 26 runs in Garza’s last two outings, 22 of which when he was still in the game.

The Brewers will send Jimmy Nelson to the mound tonight when they open a 3-game series against the Cincinnati Reds at Miller Park.  Nelson has allowed 25 runs (16 earned) over his last four outings.  He brings a 6-11 record and a 4.02 ERA into tonight’s game.

Homer Bailey pitches for Cincinnati, just his third start since returning from Tommy John surgery.

Brewers finish home stand by sweeping the Pirates (AUDIO)

August 1, 2016 By Bill Scott

Brewers logoEarly in the day, the Milwaukee Brewers thought they had a deal worked out with Cleveland that would send Jonathan Lucroy to the Indians for four players, including three prospects.  Lucroy vetoed the deal and remained a Brewer, for now.

That activity off the field didn’t seem to bother the Brewers on the field.  They knocked off Pittsburgh 4-2, sweeping the Pirates and capping off a 10-game home stand with a 7-3 record.

Lucroy could still find a new home today.  The Major League trade deadline is 3 p.m. this afternoon.

Matt Garza worked five solid innings, allowing one earned run and four relievers combined to finish the deal. [Read more…]

Five-run eighth lifts Brewers to victory (AUDIO)

July 27, 2016 By Bill Scott

Brewers logoThe Milwaukee Brewers broke a 4-4 tie with a five-run eighth inning, on the way to a 9-4 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks at Miller Park.

Scooter Gennett delivered the big blow with a two-run jam single to center to give the Brewers a 6-4 lead, spearheading the five-run rally.

The Brewers ended up sending ten hitters to the plate in the 8th inning.  Kirk Nieuwenhuis drew a based loaded walk to plate the third run in the inning before Jonathan Villar’s two-run single capped the rally.

After a shaky start, Matt Garza settled down and wound up pitching six innings, allowing three runs on five hits with two walks and two strikeouts.

The victory goes to Tyler Thornburg in relief.

The Brewers have captured the first two games in the four-game series.  Game three is tonight.  Jimmy Nelson (6-8) gets the start for Milwaukee.

A three-run sixth inning cost the Brewers in their first game back from the All-Star break.

Milwaukee led 3-1 thanks to RBI singles by Jonathan Lucroy and Jonathan Villar, as well as a solo home run from Scooter Gennett.

But the Reds got to starter Matt Garza in the home half of the sixth to take the lead and would go on to win 5-4. Garza allowed four runs on six hits in five plus innings to fall to 1-3.

Villar and Gennett each finished with two hits. Chris carter had a home run taken away from him in the fourth thanks to a leaping catch by Jay Bruce.

The series continues Saturday with a 6:10 p.m. first pitch in Cincinnati. Jimmy Nelson opposes John Lamb.

The St. Louis Cardinals ended a seven game losing streak at Busch Stadium on Friday night, knocking off the Milwaukee Brewers 7-1.

Matt Garza’s throwing error in the fourth helped the Cardinals score five runs and open a 6-1 lead.  The Brewers would never challenge from there.

The Brewers dropped to 2-5 this season against the Cardinals and are now 18-31 at Busch Stadium since 2010 and 1-3 this season.

In 5 2/3 innings, Garza allowed a season-high nine hits, seven runs (four earned) and three walks while striking out six.

Cardinals starter Jaime Garcia allowed a second-inning home run to Chris Carter, then held the Brewers in check.  He improved to 6-6 on the season and 11-5 lifetime against the Brewers.

Jimmy Nelson pitches game two of the series for the Brewers today.

Wild pitch costs Brewers against the Giants

June 15, 2016 By Bill Scott

Brewers logoBack-to-back wild pitches from Milwaukee Brewers reliever Will Smith in the 7th inning plated the winning run as the San Francisco Giants pulled out a 3-2 victory on Tuesday night at AT&T Park.

Madison Bumgarner was at the plate in the 7th when Smith uncorked two wild pitches to give the Giants the win.  It’s the 10th straight victory for San Francisco when Bumgarner is on the mound.

It wasn’t easy for San Francisco.  The Giants went 2-for-12 with runners in scoring position and left 13 men on base.

Matt Garza made his first start of the season for the Brewers after missing the first 2 1/2 months with a strained lat muscle behind his pitching shoulder.  Garza held the Giants to a run over four innings but allowed eight hits and a walk, as he pitched himself out of trouble throughout.

Jonathan Lucroy clubbed his 10th home run of the season for the Brewers in the loss.

The Brewers will try to avoid a sweep when Jimmy Nelson takes the mound this afternoon in the series finale against San Francisco’s Johnny Cueto.

The Milwaukee Brewers will give Matt Garza his first start of the season in San Francisco on Tuesday night against the Giants.  To make room in the rotation, the Brewers sent opening day starter Wily Peralta to Triple-A Colorado Springs.

Peralta earned a win in his last outing on Saturday, improving to 4-7.  He worked five innings, allowing three runs on five hits, walking one and striking out four.

But Peralta, in 13 starts this season, carried an ERA of 6.68.  He’s allowed a major-league high 97 hits over 66 innings with 42 strikeouts.  He pitched six innings in just two of his starts this season.

Peralta is the second starter sent down to the minors this season.  Taylor Jungman was also optioned to Triple-A Colorado Springs earlier and has struggled.  In his eight starts with the Sky Sox, Jungmann is 1-3 with a 9.87 ERA.
