Kunin’s late goal forges tie with Michigan

Luke Kunin’s second goal of the game came with 27 seconds left in the third period, helping the Wisconsin men’s hockey team skate away with a 4-4 tie with Big Ten leading Michigan on Saturday night at the Kohl Center.

Wisconsin (6-13-1, 1-8-3 Big Ten) pulled goaltender Matt Jurusik with 1:21 left to play and put a number of shots on Wolverines goaltender Steve Racine.  But it was Kunin won found the back of the net with his 12th goal of the season that saved the day for the Badgers.

The Badgers lost Friday night 4-1 and the Wolverines scored the only goal in the succeeding shootout on Saturday night to be awarded the extra point in the Big Ten standings.

The Badgers return to home ice this coming weekend when they host Michigan State.  Wisconsin’s only Big Ten win came in East Lansing on December 12th, a 3-0 Badger victory.

Badgers drop series opener against Michigan

Bucky Badger logoMichigan struck first but Wisconsin‘s Ryan Wagner tied their Big Ten matchup against Michigan with 2:48 left in the first period.  The game against the conference leading Wolverines would stay tied 1-1 midway through the second period until Michigan struck and went on to beat the Badgers 4-1 at the Kohl Center.

Michigan’s Dexter Dancs put the Wolverines ahead for good at the 8:20 mark of the second period on a backhanded rebound past Badger goaltender Matt Jurusik.

Michigan would widen the lead to two on the power play with just over six minutes left in the third period to make it 3-1.  Kyle Connor scored an empty netter in the final minute and the Wolverines pulled out the win the Badgers in the series opener.

Jurusik made 36 saves in goal for the Badgers, who will aim for the series split on Saturday night at the Kohl Center.

Hockey Badgers end losing skid

Ryan WagnerThe Wisconsin Badger men’s hockey team (5-12-6, 1-7-2-1 Big Ten) got a pair of goals from Ryan Wagner and three second-period goals overall, knocking off Alaska 4-3 on Friday night at the Kohl Center.

The Badgers opened the scoring with just 47-seconds left in the first period on Corbin McGuire’s second goal of the season.

The Nanooks (7-14-4, 5-11-4 WCHA) tied the game 6:51 into the second, but the Badgers answered just 18 seconds later to take the lead back for good with Ryan Wagner’s first of two goals.

Jarod Zirbel scored for the first time in his career about five minutes later for the Badgers to go up 3-to-1.  Then Wagner added his second goal and the final for the Badgers in the final four minutes of the middle period. [Read more…]

The second-ranked Wisconsin Badgers got a first period goal from junior defenseman Jenny Ryan held up in Friday’s 1-0 win over 6th-ranked Bemidji State at the Sanford Center in Bemidji.

Junior goaltender Ann-Renee Desbiens stopped all 28 shots she faced to earn her 11th shutout of the season, which leads the NCAA.  She leads the country in goals-against average (0.67) and save percentage (.962), while her 19 wins are tied for the most in the country.

The Badgers improved to 21-1-1 overall.  The two teams will close out the 2-game series this afternoon.

Badger men fall in OT

The Wisconsin men’s hockey team put together two separate third period comebacks, forcing overtime.  But the Penn State Nittany Lions scored just 44 seconds into the overtime session, pulling out a 4-3 win over the Badgers. [Read more…]

Badger hockey roundup!

The Wisconsin men’s hockey team was shutout on its home ice on Friday night, falling 2-0 to the Ohio State Buckeyes in Big Ten play.

The Badgers looked a bit rusty after a three week layoff.  Neither team scored in the first two periods before the Buckeyes finally broke through at 8:53 of the third period when David Gust beat Wisconsin freshman goaltender Matt Jurusik on the glove side.

The Buckeyes added the insurance goal with a three-on-one break with almost four minutes left with Tyler Lundey finding the back of the net. [Read more…]

Badger hockey update

Motion WThree goals in the second period gave the Wisconsin men’s hockey team a two-goal lead, but Denver fired right back with two scores of its own to salvage a 3-3 tie with the Badgers.

Matthew Freytag, Jedd Soleway and Luke Kunin scored the three Badger goals while Freshman goaltender matt Jurusik had 21 saves as the Badgers moved to 3-4-4 on the season.

The two teams wrap up their two-game series tonight.

Women extend win streak to 13

The top-ranked Wisconsin women’s hockey team opened a six-game homestand with a 5-1 win over Lindenwood at LaBahn Arena on Friday afternoon.

Emily Clark scored a pair of goals to lead the Badgers to their 13th straight win.

An assist extends sophomore Annie Pankowski’s scoring streak to 16 straight games.

The two teams wrap up their weekend series tomorrow (Sunday) at LaBahn Arena (2 p.m.).

Hockey Badgers upset #1 North Dakota

The Wisconsin Badger men’s hockey team was convinced they could hang with #1 North Dakota going into Friday nights series opener.  The Badgers did more than hang, they upset college hockey’s top ranked team, 3-1 at Ralph Engelstad Arena in Grand Forks.

It was the home opener for North Dakota and the home team opened the scoring on a Luke Johnson goal 7:31 into the game.

That goal would be the only one allowed by Wisconsin’s freshman goaltender matt Jurusik, who earned his third straight victory.  He finished with 29 saves.

Corbin McGuire tied the game in the first period for the Badgers, scoring with 9:27 left in the first period.  The Badgers also got goals from Luke Kunin and Jedd Soleway.

The two teams wrap up the series in Grand Forks tonight.
