Hockey Badgers end season in Big Ten title game

March 19, 2017 By Bill Scott

The Wisconsin men’s hockey team saw their season come to an end, falling to Penn State in a double-overtime thriller 2-1 at Joe Louis Arena in Detroit on Saturday night.

The Badgers outshot the Nittany Lions 52-35 as they dominated play, but couldn’t take advantage of the several scoring chances they had.

Liam Folkes scored both Penn State (24-11-2) goals, including the game winner on a breakaway 6:43 into the second overtime to end the game.

Matt Ustaski scored the Badgers (20-15-1) on the power play in the second period, poling home a rebound at 11:45 of the period.

Freshman goaltender Jack Berry made 33 saves in the loss, while Penn State’s Peyton Jones stopped 51 of 52 Wisconsin shots.

After combining for 12 victories the previous two years, the Badgers reached 20 wins in Tony Granato’s first season, finishing runner-up in both the Big Ten regular season and the Big Ten tournament.

Badger men’s hockey swept in Alaska

October 12, 2014 By Bill Scott

The 10th ranked Wisconsin men’s hockey team started fast, but fell to Alaska-Anchorage 4-2 on Saturday night.  The Badgers were swept in their two games at the Kendall Hockey Classic at Sullivan Arena.

The Badgers put the first seven shots on net in the game before falling to the Seawolves.  The Badgers (0-2-0) finished 0-for-5 on the power play.  Anchorage (2-0-0) was 0-for-3.

The first goal of the season for the Badgers came from freshman Matt Ustaski, who scored on a rebound in the second period.  That tied the score 1-1.  But the Seawolves tallied twice to go up 3-1.

Tim Davison scored his first goal of the season for the Badgers to close the gap t0 3-2.  The Badgers then missed out on a golden opportunity, going scoreless on a 5-minute power-play.

The Badgers wound up outshooting the Seawolves by four, tallying 29 shots.  The total more than doubled the Badgers shot output the night before (14) in a loss to the Alaska Nanooks.

Wisconsin returns to the ice this Friday at the Resch Center in Green Bay when they play the first of a two-game series against Northern Michigan.
