Brewers release 2018 Spring Training Schedule

The Milwaukee Brewers released their 2018 Spring Training schedule on Monday.  It features 33 games, including a pair of games at Minute Maid Park against the World Series Champion Houston Astros.

The Brewers will open Cactus League play on Friday, Feb. 23 with split-squad games against the NL Central Division champion Chicago Cubs at Maryvale Baseball Park and the San Francisco Giants in Scottsdale.

The final home game at Maryvale will be Thursday, March 22, against Kansas City.

The Brewers will face the Astros in Houston on March 26 and 27.  March 28th is an off day before the Brewers open the regular season in Thursday, March 29 against the Padres in San Diego. [Read more…]

U.S. edges the World in MLB futures game

MLB Futures Game, which also included Waupaca native Nate Tomlinson, who was the crew chief and home plate umpire.

The United States knocked off the World team, 7-6, in the Major League Baseball All-Star Futures Game on Sunday.

The U.S. team had nine hits by the time the game reached the fourth inning, one for every starter.  They built a 7-0 lead by the fifth, earning their seventh win in the last eight games.

The showcase of top minor league talent included 16 first-round picks.

Tampa Bay prospect Brent Honeywell was the only pitcher to go more than one inning.  He struck out four in two scoreless frames and earned the victory, as well as the MVP award.

The Brewers had three prospects in the game.  Lewis Brinson doubled home a run, his only hit of the game.  Corey Ray went o for 2.  Maurico Dubon was 1 for 3 for the World team.

The Major League All-Star game will be played on Tuesday night in Miami.  The league’s annual home run derby is set for Monday night.

Brewers edge Reds in Cactus League play

A pair of prospects combined to lead the Milwaukee Brewers to a 3-2 Cactus League win over the Cincinnati Reds on Wednesday.

Lucas Erceg, who was playing in just his second Major League spring training game, singled in another prospect, Mauricio Dubon to give the Brewers the win in Phoenix.

Keon Broxton clubbed a leadoff home run and Scooter Gennett singled in another first inning run.  Gennett also doubled and is off to a .625 start this spring.

The Brewers improved to 2-3 this spring and will face the Seattle Mariners this afternoon.  Matt Garza gets the start for the Brewers.

Brewers swing deal with Red Sox

brewers-logoThe Milwaukee Brewers sent reliever Tyler Thornburg to the Boston Red Sox today for third baseman Travis Shaw and minor leaguers Josh Pennington and Mauricio Dubon, as well as a player to be named or cash.

Shaw gives the Brewers another left handed power bat after hitting .242 with 16 home runs and 74 rbi’s last season.  He appeared in 145 games for the Red Sox in his first full Major League season.  He had five RBI games four times last season, tied for the most such games in the majors.

The 22-year-old Dubon was ranked as the seventh-best prospect in the Red Sox organization by Baseball America.  He hit .306 with 14 HR and 154 RBI and 73 stolen bases in 330 games during four minor-league seasons.  He hit .323 with 6 HR, 69 RBI and 30 stolen bases in 124 games between Class-A Salem (62g) and Double-A Portland (62g) in 2016.
