Deiter signs with Dolphins

June 15, 2019 By Bill Scott

Former Wisconsin Badger offensive lineman Michael Deiter officially signed a four-year deal with the Miami Dolphins.  The Miami Sun Sentinel reports the deal to be worth $3.9 million with a signing bonus of just under a million dollars.

Deiter was the 15th pick of the third round (78th overall) and was the first former Badger to be selected in the April Draft.

Deiter earned first-team All-America honors by the FWAA and The Athletic in 2018 and was a consensus first-team All-Big Ten selection and the Rimington-Pace Big Ten Offensive Lineman of the Year.

Deiter started a program-record 54 games during his Wisconsin career, 24 at left guard, 16 at center and 14 at left tackle.  He became the first UW offensive lineman drafted since the New Orleans Saints made Ryan Ramczyk the final pick of the first round in the 2017 Draft.

Wisconsin losing an offensive lineman to the Draft

January 2, 2019 By Bill Scott

David Edwards

The Wisconsin Badgers is already losing seniors Michael Deiter and Beau Benzschawel to the 2019 NFL Draft.  Now junior tackle David Edwards announced this week that he will put his name into the upcoming draft.

Edwards recently tweeted, “After careful consideration, I’ve decided to forgo my final year of eligibility and declare for the NFL Draft.  I’ve had the chance of a lifetime to call myself a Badger and it’s hard to leave behind something that means so much to me, but it’s always been my dream to play pro football.  I couldn’t be more excited to pursue the opportunity.”

Edwards missed the last three games of the season, including the Pinstripe Bowl, with a shoulder injury.  As a sophomore, Edwards earned All-America honors from multiple outlets and was a consensus second-team All-Big Ten selection.  He checked out his potential draft status and received a second round grade before returning for his junior season in Madison.

Redshirt freshman Logan Bruss took over at right tackle when Edwards was out and will start spring ball as the No. 1 right tackle.

The Badgers could also lose a fourth starter soon.  Center Tyler Biadasz is going through the process of making a decision to return or not.  ESPN Draft expert Mel Kiper Jr., had him rated as the number-4 center prospect among eligible players.  After last week’s Pinstripe Bowl, Biadasz said he’s ready for the NFL.  He’ll have until Jan. 14 to make a decision.

November 28, 2018 By Bill Scott

The Wisconsin Badgers saw 11 players earn All-Big Ten recognition as the conference announced its postseason awards winners this week.

Deiter returning to Wisconsin in 2018

January 11, 2018 By Bill Scott

Wisconsin is set to return all five of their starting offensive lineman in 2018.

Redshirt junior Michael Deiter, who started all 14 games at left tackle this past season, announced that he is returning to UW.

It’s possible that Deiter could move back inside to center or guard next season with the development of reserve tackles Patrick Kasl and Cole Van Lanen.  Deiter is projected to play center or guard in the NFL.

Offensive Coordinator and line coach Joe Rudolph has several options with his offensive line next season, including Van Lanen and Kasl.

Overall, the Badgers will now return 10 of the 11 players that started on offense in the Orange Bowl.

Badgers earn Big Ten offensive honors

November 30, 2017 By Bill Scott

Just a day after 12 members of the Wisconsin defense earn All-Big Ten honors, eight members from the offensive side of the ball were honored by the Big Ten on Wednesday.

Freshman tailback Jonathan Taylor and offensive linemen Beau Benzschawel and Michael Deiter were all named consensus first-team selections.

Badger senior tight end Troy Fumagalli was a first-team pick by the coaches and second by the media.

Sophomore tackle David Edwards was a consensus second team selection.  Freshman center Tyler Biadasz is a third team selection by the coaches and media while sophomore wide receiver Quintez Cephus and sophomore quarterback Alex Hornibrook were consensus honorable mention selections.

The Ohio State Buckeyes led the conference with 11 offensive players honored.  The Big Ten’s individual awards will be announced on Thursday.

The Badgers (12-0, 9-0 Big Ten) and Buckeyes (10-2, 8-1) will play for the Big Ten Championship on Saturday night (7:17 p.m.) at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis.

Badgers not focused on rankings

October 31, 2017 By Bill Scott

Paul Chryst

The first College Football Playoff rankings will be announced tonight (6 p.m. – ESPN) and the Wisconsin Badgers aren’t spending a whole lot of time worrying about where they stack up.  In fact, they’re not spending any time at all.

The Badgers (8-0, 5-0 Big Ten) are ranked No. 4 in both the Associated Press top 25 poll and the Amway coaches poll and will face the Indiana Hoosiers (3-5, 0-5) at 11 a.m. Saturday in Bloomington.

“The only thing that really matters,” head coach Paul Chryst said, “and that you try to influence is: ‘How can we make the most of the moments that we’re in? And how can we continue to get better as a football team?’ “And that takes a ton of energy. That is where I thin all of our focus needs to go.”

Chryst’s players all echo their coaches thoughts.  They say they’re not interested and won’t watch the show tonight or any other night.

Left tackle Michael Deiter said the only time he would be interested in watching is after the Big Ten Championship.  Until that point, they need to control what they can control and that is the matchup against their weekly opponent.

The Badgers haven’t faced a ranked team yet this season and that usually doesn’t bode well when it comes to the National Playoff rankings.

But instead of losing sleep over it, the players are focused on winning each game each week.  The Badgers are now the only unbeaten team in the Big Ten and they’re hoping it stays that way following Saturday’s game at Indiana.

Badgers knock off Illinois, but far from perfect

October 30, 2017 By Bill Scott

The Wisconsin Badger football team moved a step closer to the Big Ten West Division title, knocking off Illinois 24-10 on Saturday.  While the Badgers improved to 8-0 on the season and remain the only unbeaten team in the Big Ten, they once again gave no impression that they are ready to compete against other top teams in the conference (Ohio State & Penn State), or nationally for that matter either.

Wisconsin freshman tailback Jonathan Taylor  left in the first half with a left leg injury.  He had carried 12 times for 73 yards before heading to the sidelines for the rest of the game.

Without Taylor, the Badgers finished with 168 rushing yards on 45 carries, their second lowest total of the season.  Taylor himself, averages 168.5 yards a game.

Without Taylor, walk-on Garrett Groshek rushed 12 times for 51 yards and a touchdown and Bradrick Shaw added 40 yards on 12 carries.

One of the Badgers scores came on left tackle Michael Deiter’s four-yard touchdown reception. [Read more…]

More Badgers on College Football preseason watch lists

July 14, 2017 By Bill Scott

Five Wisconsin Badger football standouts have made the latest round of college football preseason watch lists.

Linebacker Jack Cichy, lineman Conor Sheehy and cornerback D’Cota Dixon were among 103 players who made the watch list for the Bronko Nagurski Trophy, presented to the national defensive player of the year.

Offensive center Michael Deiter and tackle Beau Benzschawel are among the 81 players on the Outland Trophy watch list.  That honor goes to the best interior lineman in the country on offense or defense.

Dating back to the Outland trophy’s inception in 1946, students from current Big Ten schools have earned the award 26 times, most recently in 2014 when Iowa’s Brandon Scherff was recognized.

Students from current Big Ten schools have received the Nagurski Trophy five times since the award’s debut in 1993.  The latest Big Ten winner was Nebraska’s Ndamukong Suh in 2009.

Wide receiver Alex Erickson has provided another ringing endorsement for the Wisconsin football team’s walk-on program.

The former walk-on from Darlington was named a first-team all-Big Ten pick by the media and a second-team pick by the coaches.

Erickson leads the Badgers in receptions (72) and receiving yards (924).

Erickson is third in the Big Ten in receiving yards per game (77.0) and needs 76 more yards in Wisconsin’s upcoming bowl game to become the fourth player in school history with a 1,000-yard receiving season.

Redshirt senior offensive tackle Tyler Marz was named a second-team pick by the media and a third-team pick by the coaches.

Redshirt sophomore tight end Troy Fumagalli was a consensus honorable mention pick and redshirt freshman Michael Deiter was named honorable mention by the media.
