Badgers to find out Tuesday if they’ll play Purdue on Saturday

November 3, 2020 By Bill Scott

After last Saturday’s game against Nebraska was cancelled, the Wisconsin Badgers have had their focus on getting healthy and getting the spread of the coronavirus under control.  Today (Tuesday), the Badgers will find out of this week’s game against Purdue will be played.

Wednesday is the first day the Badgers can resume practice after the school announced a seven day pause in all team activities last week.  As of Saturday, the Badgers reported 22 players and coaches had tested positive for COVID-19.

It’s a big day for the Badgers, who would not only like to resume their season, but want to avoid a second cancellation.  If this weeks game can’t be played, the Badgers would no longer have any margin for error with regards to competing for a Big Ten Championship.

According to Big Ten protocols, teams must play at least six games to be considered for participation in the championship game.  The only thing that would change that is if the average number of conference games played by all teams falls below six.

Michigan game time set

Wisconsin’s Big Ten road game at Michigan on November 14 will kick off at 6:30 p.m. and be televised by ABC.  The Wolverines are 1-1 after falling to rival Michigan State 27-24 on Saturday.  The Wolverines are scheduled to play at Indiana this Saturday.

Badgers blank Michigan State for 4th shutout of the season

October 12, 2019 By Bill Scott

The Michigan State Spartans tried to close the door on Wisconsin’s Heisman Trophy candidate Jonathan Taylor on Saturday.  While they held him to a season-low 80 yards on 26 carries, the Badgers found other ways to pull out a 38-0 victory at Camp Randall Stadium.  Taylor did score two rushing touchdowns, and continues to lead the nation in scoring.  He has 14 rushing touchdowns and eight receiving touchdowns on the season.

It’s also the 13th time in his career, that Taylor has rushed for multiple touchdowns in a game.

The Badgers did rush for 222 yards for the game.  Wide receiver Kendric Pryor scored on a 66-yard run.  Kakia Watson added 34 yards and Aron Cruickshank added 28.

Badger quarterback Jack Coan completed 18 of 21 for 180 yards and a touchdown and the Badgers defense did the rest, pulling out their 6th straight win to start the season.  Coan completed passes to eight difference receivers, with tight end Jake Ferguson and wide out Danny Davis leading the way with four catches each. Former Marquette players Sam and Joey Hauser haven’t made their transfer plans official yet, but the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel is citing sources that say the brothers are no longer considering a transfer to Madison to play for the Badgers.

Less than a month ago, it was reported that the Hauser’s were going to transfer to Wisconsin and play for the Badgers.  That has apparently changed.

The Journal Sentinel reported Saturday that Sam Hauser is expected to choose Virginia to play for Tony Bennett and Joey will play for Tom Izzo and the Michigan State Spartans.

Sam Hauser played three seasons at Marquette and will have one season of eligibility remaining.  Joey Hauser has two seasons of eligibility remaining, although he could decide to appeal to regain a season that he lost because of injury. [Read more…]

Badgers fall short in finale against Michigan State (AUDIO)

The Michigan State Spartans wrapped up the outright Big Ten title in Madison on Sunday, but it didn’t come easy.  After falling behind in the second half, the Spartans made some big shots down the stretch and buried eight-straight free throws in a 68-63 win over the Wisconsin Badgers on Senior Day at the Kohl Center.

The Badgers (14-17, 7-11 Big Ten) saw their three-game winning streak come to an end, losing to Michigan State for the second time this season.

Michigan State (28-3, 16-2) won their 12th straight.

Wisconsin freshman Brad Davison scored a career high 30 points, 23 of which came in the second half.  Davison even had to leave the game in the second half when he dislocated his left shoulder, but returned less than a minute later.

Davison hit 3 of 6 from three-point distance and 10 of 19 shots overall.  He became the first UW freshman to score 30 points in a Big Ten game since Michael Finley had 30 against Michigan on Feb. 26, 1992. [Read more…]

Spartans grab share of Big Ten title

February 21, 2018 By Bill Scott

Michigan State claimed at least a share of the Big Ten men’s basketball title as the Spartans knocked off Illinois 81-61 in East Lansing.

The Spartans improved to 15-2 in the Big Ten with the victory.  With one game left, Michigan State can clinch the title outright with a victory over the Wisconsin Badgers in Madison on Sunday.

Miles Bridges led the way with 19 points as the Spartans won their 14th Big Ten title and first since 2012.

Elsewhere in the Big Ten on Tuesday night, Ohio State (14-3) stayed within a game of Michigan State with a 79-52 senior night victory over Rutgers.

Nebraska improved to 12-5 in Big Ten play, knocking off Indiana 66-57.

Badgers move to 8th in polls, move on to Michigan

Wisconsin football coach Paul Chryst preaches one game at a time.  His players have bought in and so far, it’s led to a 4-0 start.

The Badgers rolled to a 30-6 win over the Michigan State Spartans on Saturday and now it’s time to focus on the next opponent, the Michigan Wolverines, in Ann Arbor on Saturday afternoon (2:30 p.m. ABC).

It wasn’t long after the win over the Spartans that Paul Chryst was only willing to discuss what’s next, their matchup against the Wolverines.

Leo Musso, who scooped up a fumble recovery and scampered for a long touchdown run said the one-at-a-time way of thinking is always top of mind.

The Badgers play at Michigan Saturday, then get a week off before hosting Ohio State, playing at Iowa and returning home to host Nebraska.  The fans and media line them up one after another and try to predict where the Badgers might fall, if at all.

The players and coaches aren’t interested in hearing any of it.  They’ll get to work this week and worry only about Michigan and it would be smart not to rule this team out of any game they play.

Top 25 Polls

The Badgers climbed in both Top 25 polls after their win over Michigan State.  They’re 8th in both the A.P. Top 25 and the Top 25 Coaches poll.

Saturday’s opponent, Michigan is 5th in the Coaches Top 25 and fourth in the A.P. Poll.

Badgers win streak comes to an end

Ethan Happ

The Wisconsin Badgers lost their first game since January 12th, shooting just 34-percent while falling at Michigan State 69-57 at the Breslin Center.

The men’s basketball team entered the game as the hottest team in the Big Ten, with seven straight wins.  But a cold shooting night meant the Badgers losing streak in East Lansing grew to nine games.

The Badgers fell behind 14-3 early and shot just 25-percent from the field in the first half.  While things improved slightly in the second half, the Badgers had dug themselves to big of a hole.

Ethan Happ was able to get past some early foul trouble to finish with 18-points for the Badgers.  But Nigel Hayes, who is a big reason why the Badgers had won seven-straight, couldn’t throw one in the ocean last [Read more…]

Jackson not expected to play on Senior Day

February 28, 2015 By Bill Scott

Traevon Jackson

Traevon Jackson

A week ago, Wisconsin senior guard Traevon Jackson said he would be ready to return to action when the Badgers played host to Michigan State on Senior Day at the Kohl Center Sunday.

As of Friday, Jackson hasn’t been cleared by the team’s medical staff to even return to practice.

Jackson broke his right foot in the second half of Wisconsin’s Jan. 11th loss at Rutgers and has missed 11 games since then.

Jackson did discard the boot on his right foot, but it would appear he won’t be available for the Badgers when they look to clinch at least a share of the Big Ten title against Michigan State on Sunday.

Wisconsin football team during National Signing Day (Wednesday) tomorrow.  According to the Wisconsin State Journal, Evans tweeted Monday night that he has committed to Michigan State.

On his twitter account, Evans posted, “as you all may have heard I’m no longer a Badger and no it’s not about the academics, just the best decision for me.”

The State Journal said despite what Evans tweeted, a source close to the situation said academic problems were the primary issue with UW.

Evans is listed as a four-star recruit by Scout.com and the No. 16 player nationally at his position.

Badgers cold shooting night means lopsided defeat (Video)

March 8, 2013 By Bill Scott

The Wisconsin Badgers couldn’t throw one in the ocean last night.  The result, a 58-43 loss to the Michigan State Spartans in East Lansing last night.

The Badgers (20-10, 11-6 Big Ten) trailed by 7 at halftime but scored the first points of the second half on a Jared Berggren basket.  That’s when the Spartans took over.  They ran off 16-straight points to go up 41-20 and the Badgers were finished.

Wisconsin shot just 29% from the field and only 17% from three-point range.  They had more turnovers (17) then made baskets (15) in the second half.

It wasn’t just poor shooting though.  The Badgers lost many of the 50/50 battles much of the night.

Wisconsin now resides in 5th place in the Big Ten and they’re in danger of having to play an opening round game in next week’s Big Ten Tournament.  To avoid that opening round game, the Badgers must win at Penn State on Sunday and need Indiana to beat Michigan in Ann Arbor on Sunday.

Keith Appling had 19 points to lead the Spartans.  Ben Brust had 10 for Wisconsin in defeat.
