Wisconsin hockey loses forward, adds a goaltender via transfers

April 6, 2020 By Bill Scott

Former Wisconsin hockey forward Sean Dhooghe entered the transfer portal last week and will leave the program.  Dhooghe tweeted late last week that he’ll play his final season at Arizona State.

It’s not known at this time if Dhooghe will have to sit out a year under NCAA transfer rules, or if he’ll be allowed to play immediately.  The NCAA is considering allowing athletes to transfer once during their career without penalty, which could go into place for next season.

The Badgers beat Arizona State twice during the 2019-20 season but Dhooghe sat out both games with a knee injury.  He didn’t appear in any of the team’s final eight games, even though he was physically ready to return.

Wisconsin and Arizona State could face off again next season, as part of the field for the inaugural Holiday Face-Off at Milwaukee’s Fiserv Forum in December.  The pairings for that event haven’t been announced yet. [Read more…]

Linus Weissbach

Freshman forward Linus Weissbach scored two goals in his debut for the No. 11/12 Wisconsin Badger men’s hockey team, helping UW win the U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame Game against Michigan Tech, 3-2, at the Kohl Center on Sunday.

The Badgers (1-0-0) improved to 5-1-0 in the U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame Game.  They outshot Michigan Tech (0-1-0), 27-22.

Junior forward Will Johnson opened the scoring 5:51 into the first period, scoring on the rebound of junior Seamus Malone’s wraparound attempt.

Five minutes later, Weissbach tallied his first goal as a Badger after MTU’s Jake Jackson was called for slashing.  The Gothenburg, Sweden, native collected a blocked shot and set it over Patrick Munson’s right shoulder to give the Badgers a 2-0 lead. [Read more…]

Hockey Badgers open season with U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame Game

May 19, 2017 By Bill Scott

The Wisconsin men’s hockey team will open its 2017-18 season with the United States Hockey Hall of Fame game in Madison on Sunday, Oct. 1 against Michigan Tech.

The first regular-season game comes quickly for the Badgers, who officially begin practice just one day earlier, Sept. 30.  Last season, Wisconsin opened with an exhibition against Victoria.

Michigan Tech finished second in the WCHA during the regular season and won the Broadmoor Trophy, the WCHA’s conference title, by defeating Bowling Green in double overtime to earn an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament.  The Huskies fell to eventual national champions, Denver, 5-2, in the opening round of the national tournament.

The two teams are former WCHA opponents, having met 156 times.  The Badgers own a 99-47-10 advantage and a 61-18-6 record in Madison.  The two teams split their last series, in early January of 2015.

The U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame Game is an exempt game which means both schools can play one additional game above and beyond the NCAA maximum normally allowed in a season.
