Rodgers, Adams lead Packers past Eagles

December 7, 2020 By Bill Scott

Packers RB Aaron Jones

Aaron Rodgers passed for 295 yards and three touchdowns and Davante Adams caught 10 passes for 121 yards and two scores to lead the Green Bay Packers to a 30-16 win over the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday at Lambeau Field.

The second of Adams two touchdown catches was a 9-yard, catch and run, stiff-arming Eagles corner Darius Slay for the final five yards, was the 400th of Rodgers career.  The Packers superstar signal caller became the quickest quarterback in NFL history to reach 400 career touchdown passes, reaching the milestone in his 193rd game.  New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees needed 205 games to reach 400.

Rodgers three touchdown passes gives him 36 for the season, his fifth season with at least 35 touchdown passes.  No other quarterback in NFL history has accomplished that feat.

Rodgers doesn’t have any of his previous century-mark touchdown balls.  Hours before kickoff, Adams made sure all of the receivers/running backs knew that the game ball used for 400, would go right to Rodgers.

Adams, who finished with 997 receiving yards for the second time in his career last season, surpassed the 1,000 yard mark to go along with 13 touchdowns and still has four more games left in the regular season.  To make those numbers even more impressive, Adams missed 2 1/2 games with an ankle injury. Packers plan to hold joint practices in training camp

March 26, 2019 By Bill Scott

Matt LaFleur

New head coach Matt LaFleur’s first training camp as the Green Bay Packers new head coach will include holding joint practices with a preseason opponent in Green Bay.

LaFleur told Pete Dougherty-Packers News at the NFL owners meeting today that the Packers opponent in their preseason opener would be the team expected to practice with the Packers.

LaFleur said his teams of the last two years, the Rams and the Titans, practiced against another team in camp for a couple of days.  He said he found it to be a good way to get starters working against starters without wearing his own players down.

The last time the Packers held joint practices was 2005, when former coach Mike Sherman brought the Buffalo Bills to Green Bay.

Sherman out of the running in Tampa Bay

January 26, 2012 By Bill Scott

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have finalized a 5-year deal with Rutgers’ coach Greg Schiano to become the teams next head coach.

Former Packers coach Mike Sherman was scheduled to meet for a second time with the Buccaneers yesterday but is out of the running.

The 45-year-old Schiano has been an assistant coach in the NFL with the Chicago Bears from 1996-98.  He’s coached the Scarlet Knights for 11 years, leading the program to winning seasons in 6 of the last 7 seasons.

The Bucs fired Raheem Morris after a 4-12 record that included 10-straight losses.

There’s a chance that Sherman could still become the offensive coordinator in Miami under new Dolphins coach Joe Philbin.

Packers are nearly out of the woods with coaching staff

January 25, 2012 By Bill Scott

Mike Sherman is reportedly interviewing for a second time with the Tampa

Mike Sherman

Bay Buccaneers with regards to their head coaching vacancy.

The Oakland Raiders are set to hire Denver Broncos defensive coordinator Dennis Allen.

Indianapolis appears to be going in a direction that doesn’t include any Green Bay Packers assistant coaches, which means the chances of Mike McCarthy losing any more of his assistant coaches is diminishing.

A number of teams still have coordinator positions open, but Allen’s hiring in Oakland means Dom Capers and Winston Moss, who both interviewed for the Raiders opening, will be returning to Green Bay for now.

McCarthy and his coaching staff is currently in Hawaii, preparing the NFC squad for this weekends Pro Bowl.  Practices are scheduled to begin today.  Six Packers will play for the NFC squad with John Kuhn sitting out because of a knee injury he suffered in the Packers season ending loss to the New York Giants.

Capers, Moss, Sherman still in NFL coaching hunt

January 24, 2012 By Bill Scott

Green Bay Packers defensive coordinator Dom Capers is the latest to talk with

Dom Capers

new Oakland Raiders general manager Reggie McKenzie about the Raiders head coaching vacancy.

Packers linebackers coach Winston Moss has also talked with McKenzie, who is taking his time, trying to find the right man for the job.

Oregon coach Chip Kelly has pulled his name out of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers coaching search.  That means former Packers coach Mike Sherman will likely get a second interview in Tampa.

Joe Philbin’s departure for Miami means the Packers are looking for an offensive coordinator.  Many expect Mike McCarthy to promote quarterbacks coach Tom Clements from within for that job.

There could be a lot of shuffling on Mike McCarthy’s coaching staff, but the Packers coach seems to welcome the change for some of his coaches, keeping them challenged in the offense.  An example of that would be moving Edgar Bennett last season from running backs coach to his current post at wide receiver.
