Milwaukee & Green Bay fall short of Horizon League upsets

February 9, 2018 By Bill Scott

Both Milwaukee and Green Bay fell just short in Horizon League upset bids on Thursday night.

The UW-Milwaukee Panthers dropped a 54-52 decision to conference co-leader Northern Kentucky.  The Panthers (13-14, 6-8 Horizon League) Jeremiah Bell missed a three-point attempt with three seconds to go that would have won it.

Bryce Barnes had 13 points to lead the Panthers.

In Dayton, Ohio, the Green Bay Phoenix fell to Horizon League co-leader Wright State 68-64.

The Phoenix (10-17, 5-9 HL) took an 11-point lead with just under 11 minutes remaining, but the Raiders (19-7, 11-2 HL) responded with a 12-0 run to get back the momentum and the eventual win.

Sandy Cohen had 21 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Phoenix in defeat.

The Panthers entered the tournament with a 9-game losing streak but got hot at just the right time.  Milwaukee (11-24) was trying to become the first team with more than 20 losses to qualify for the NCAA Tournament.

This is just the fifth season for Northern Kentucky as a Division 1 program.  The Norse advances to the NCAA Tournament for the first time.

The future is bright for first year Panthers coach LaVall Jordan.  Their starting lineup consisted of only one senior (Cody Wichmann).  Milwaukee started two freshmen and a sophomore in their lineup.

Brock Stull had 19 points to lead the Panthers.  Center Brett Prahl added a dozen, but the Panthers managed to shoot just 36% from the field and only 22% from three-point range (4 for 18)

Milwaukee Panthers are thinking Cinderella

March 6, 2017 By Bill Scott

Post-season conference tournaments are a nightmare for regular season champions.  Teams that earn regular season titles over the course of 16 or 18 conference games, get very little reward.  They have to go prove themselves again in conference tournament action.  Sometimes it works out and sometimes it doesn’t.

Valparaiso for example, was leading the Horizon League all season.  Then came an injury to their top player, Alec Peters, and the Crusaders were caught and passed by Oakland.  The Golden Grizzlies entered the Horizon League Tournament as the number-one seed and Valpo was number two.  Both teams ended up losing their first games.  So did third-seeded Green Bay, which means there will [Read more…]

Panthers thriving in role of Cinderella

March 5, 2017 By Bill Scott

The Milwaukee Panther men’s basketball team entered the Horizon League Tournament as the lowest seed in the field.  They’ve become a real story after a pair of victories as they await the winner of Sunday afternoon’s battle between Green Bay and UIC.

The Panthers moved into the semifinals of the tournament with a 43-41 win over second seeded Valparaiso in Saturday’s quarterfinals.

Milwaukee (10-23) got 11 points and nine rebounds from Cody Wichmann in the victory.

Valparaiso (24-8) played without Horizon League Player of the Year, Alec Peters, who was out with a stress fracture in his right foot.  Peters was averaging 23 points and 10.1 rebounds a game.  Without him, the Crusaders had season lows in field goal percentage (31.9), made field goals (15) and points in a half (12).
