Packers injury picture improving

Green Bay Packers head coach Mike McCarthy is optimistic wide receiver Davante Adams and safety Morgan Burnett may be able to play tomorrow when the Packers host the San Diego Chargers at Lambeau Field (3:25 pm).

Although he had to be helped off the field last Sunday in a game against the Rams, guard T.J. Lang says he’s ready to start the next game.

Nose guard B.J. Raji, cornerback LaDarius Gunter and linebacker Nick Perry are listed as doubtful for the game against the Chargers.

Matthews fined

Packers linebacker Clay Matthews was fined $17,363 by the N-F-L for his first quarter hit on St. Louis Rams quarterback Nick Foles last Sunday.  The fine is for a first-time offense for roughing the passer.  Matthews had a previous fine against Foles while the quarterback played for the Philadelphia Eagles in 2013, but it was rescinded.  Matthews wasn’t penalized for the hit in Sunday’s game but Rams coach Jeff Fisher complained that he should have.

Packers face 49ers today!

October 3, 2015 By Bill Scott

Jared Abbrederis

Jared Abbrederis

The Green Bay Packers are in San Francisco today to face a 49ers defense that has surrendered 90 points in the last two games.  The Packers should make that total grow at a rapid pace.  Only Arizona in the N-F-C has scored more points than the Packers in the first three weeks of the season.

The Packers have promoted former Wisconsin standout wide receiver Jared Abbrederis from the practice squad, releasing DT Bruce Gaston.  Abbrederis has struggled with injuries in his first two N-F-L seasons but expects to bolster a receiving corps which is expected to be without injured wide receiver Davante Adams.  Adams is listed as doubtful for today’s game with a sprained ankle.

Safety Morgan Burnett is also listed as doubtful.  Veteran defensive lineman Letroy Guion is ready to go after missing three games due to a suspension for violating the league’s substance abuse policy.

Kickoff this afternoon is set for 3:25 p-m Central time.

Packers face the Chiefs, without Burnett

September 28, 2015 By Bill Scott

Packers logoThe Green Bay Packers received good news on the injury front when running back Eddie Lacy and wide receiver Davante Adams were both upgraded to probable for tonight’s game against the Kansas City Chiefs at Lambeau Field.  Lacy and Adams both suffered ankle injuries in last week’s win over Seattle.

Reserve fullback Aaron Ripkowski (shoulder) was also upgraded to probable as well.

But the news wasn’t all good for the Packers after Morgan Burnett’s calf injury resurfaced and he was ruled out for tonight’s game.

Burnett will miss his second game of the season after he sat out the opener against the Chicago Bears.

Packers concerned about tackling issues

September 15, 2015 By Bill Scott

Dom Capers

The Green Bay Packers struggled with tackling last season and again during the preseason, so it shouldn’t have been a surprise to see many of those issues come up in last Sunday’s 31-23 win over the Chicago Bears.

The Packers spend time in practice working on tackling form, but it hasn’t translated to the games.  Matt Forte  and Jacquizz Rodgers gained another 54 yards after contact or totally missed tackles against the Bears.

Defensive Coordinator Dom Capers said it’s not good enough.

The Packers get no breaks.  They’ll face Marshawn Lynch and the Seattle Seahawks this Sunday night.  In the NFC Championship game last season, the Packers allowed Lynch to rush for 77 yards on eight carries, including a 24-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter and overtime. [Read more…]

Inside linebacker is last years Safety

Mike McCarthy

Mike McCarthy

A year ago, the Green Bay Packers knew they needed to address the safety position.  They were constantly reminded about it during the 2014 Scouting Combine.

Packers coach Mike McCarthy pointed out during this year’s combine that he answered “seven” questions about the Packers’ safety position and compared it to this year, where the questions centered on linebackers.

The Packers went out and drafted Ha Ha Clinton-Dix in the first round.  His acquisition not only improved the position substantially, but Morgan Burnett then went out and had the best season of his career as well. [Read more…]

Defense crumbles in loss to the Saints

October 27, 2014 By Bill Scott

The New Orleans Saints showed Sunday night that they’re still playoff contenders, cruising to a 44-23 win over the Green Bay Packers at the Super Dome.

The Packers defense has been used to getting take/aways as a way to hold the opponents in check.  Last night, Drew Brees completed 27 of 32 for 311 yards and three touchdowns and running back Mark Ingram tore the Packers front seven to shreds with 172 yards on 24 carries and a touchdown.

In the first half, the Packers defense bent but wouldn’t break.  The Saints mustered one first half touchdown and three field goals.

But in the second half, rookie Brandin Cooks got behind the Packers secondary for a 50-yard touchdown and a 23-16 Saints lead.  Drew Brees then added a 22-yard touchdown pass to Jimmy Graham to give the Saints a 30-16 advantage and the rout was on.

The Packers played without starters Morgan Burnett and Sam Shields.  Burnett’s absence was very noticeable.  The Packers defense didn’t force the Saints to punt once in the game.  It’s the second time this season (Bears) that the opponent hasn’t had to punt against the Packers. [Read more…]

Matthews says his thumb is ready to go

August 7, 2014 By Bill Scott

Clay Matthews

Clay Matthews

After two weeks of Green Bay Packers training camp workouts, linebacker Clay Matthews said he and his surgically repaired thumb are ready to go.

Matthews said he expects to start Saturday’s preseason opener against the Tennessee Titans and felt his thumb is back to where it needs to be to get a solid grip on a ball carrier and have no issues bringing him down.

Matthews did have a chance at an interception in practice on Wednesday but had the hard thrown pass from Matt Flynn go through his hands.  Matthews said, “Flynn put a little extra zip on that, and it just kind of caught me off-guard.  It won’t happen on game day.”

Injury Update

Safety Morgan Burnett missed a second day of practice with an oblique strain.  Coach Mike McCarthy said Burnett is considered day-to-day.

Letroy Guion (hamstring) and Jerel Worth (back) have not practiced yet and McCarthy gave no timetable for their return.

Packers try to improve their defense, start with a safety (Audio & Video)

May 9, 2014 By Bill Scott

The Green Bay Packers defense lacked playmakers last season.  We saw missed tackles, take/aways were down and there wasn’t a

single interception from the safety position.

With the top two playmaking linebackers off the board, the Packers used the 21st pick in the 2014 NFL draft on Alabama safety Ha Ha Clinton-Dix.  Jerron McMillian was cut in December and M.D. Jennings was not offered a contract during the off-season.  And starter Morgan Burnett didn’t come close to playing up to his new contract that pays him more than $6-million a season.

The Packers are hoping Clinton-Dix will come in and push to start right away.  They’re also hoping he’ll help boost the play of Burnett.

Safeties coach Darren Perry believes they get a player in Clinton-Dix that can do it all.  One scout said “Ha Ha” isn’t great at any one thing, but he’s pretty solid at everything.

One thing is certain, the Packers need better play from the safety position this season. [Read more…]

Lions carve up the Packers

November 28, 2013 By Bill Scott

The Packers were no match for the Detroit Lions today getting routed 40-10 at Ford Field.  It was the largest loss by the Packers since losing to New England 35-0 in 2006, Mike McCarthy’s first year as Head Coach.

It was a rough day for Matt Flynn who made his first start of the season for the injured Aaron Rodgers.  He was just 10 0f 20 through the air for 139-yards, threw a pick, fumbled twice and was sacked 7-times. The Packers couldn’t get anything going on the ground either.  As a team, they carried the ball 15-times for only 24-yards.  Eddie Lacy had just 16-yards on 10-rushes.  The 126-total yards of offense was the least in a game since the 1978 season.

The Lions racked up 561-yards on offense.  Matthews Stafford threw for 330-yards and 3-touchdowns. Reggie Bush tallied 117-yards on the ground with a score.  The lone Packers touchdown came on a Morgan Burnett fumble recovery, one of 4-turnovers the defense forced.

The loss puts the Packers at 5-6-1, a game and a half behind Detroit who sits at 7-5.  The Packers host Atlanta a week from Sunday.

Packers lose more to injuries

August 24, 2013 By Bill Scott

The Green Bay Packers lost a total of five players to injury in the 17-10 loss to the Seattle Seahawks on Friday night.  Four of the five are either

Morgan Burnett

starters or players that play a significant amount of playing time.

Two defensive starters, linebacker Brad Jones and safety Morgan Burnett suffered hamstring injuries.  Defensiveback Casey Hayward left with a recurrence of the hamstring injury that kept him out of the first three weeks of training camp.  Running back DuJuan Harris went down with a right knee injury early.  It’s the same knee that cost him the first three weeks of camp.  Outside linebacker Jarvis Reed, considered to be a longshot to win a roster spot, left with a knee injury.

Burnett’s injury could be of most concern to the Packers if it’s serious because of a lack of depth at the position.
