Wilkerson lost for the season

September 25, 2018 By Bill Scott

Muhammad Wilkerson

Green Bay Packers defensive end Muhammad Wilkerson was carted off the field and taken by ambulance to a hospital in Washington D.C. on Sunday.  Wilkerson remained there overnight into Monday because he needed a procedure that would allow him to return to Green Bay.

Wilkerson suffered a significant ankle injury and will be lost for the season.

Former Northwestern Wildcat Dean Lowry took his place and played a total of 24 snaps in the loss to the Redskins.  Lowry and Montravius Adams will continue to fill the shoes of Wilkerson, which won’t be easy.

Wilkerson came to Green Bay on a one-year deal, hoping to play well to get a bigger contract moving forward.

Packers getting healthier as they prepare to host Pittsburgh on Thursday

August 13, 2018 By Bill Scott

Mo Wilkerson is among those that returned to practice on Sunday.

The Green Bay Packers had a number of players return to the practice field on Sunday.

Defensive lineman Mike Daniels, corner Kevin King, left tackle David Bakhtiari and running back Aaron Jones all returned but didn’t take part in team drills.

Corner Jaire Alexander, WR Adonis-Jennings, fullback Joe Kerridge, WR Randall Cobb, TE Jimmy Graham and defensive lineman Muhammad Wilkerson all returned and took part in all drills.

The only three players that didn’t practice were WR Trevor Davis (hamstring), RB Devante Mays (hamstring) and safety Jermaine Whitehead (back).

The Packers hold their last open training camp practice of the week today (Monday).  The rest of the week is behind closed doors with the team set to play preseason game number two on Thursday night against the Pittsburgh Steelers at Lambeau Field.

Packers release Nelson, new GM is off and running (AUDIO)

March 14, 2018 By Bill Scott

Jordy Nelson

When new general manager Brian Gutekunst was hired, he said free agency would be one of the tools he would use to help improve the Green Bay Packers.  When the free agent legal tampering period opened on Monday, Gutekunst hit the ground running.

By the end of the day on Tuesday, the Packers had agreements with tight end Jimmy Graham and defensive end Muhammad Wilkerson.

Of course those deals, which can officially be signed when the free agent signing period opens on Wednesday afternoon, came with a price.  That price was the release of “fan favorite” Jordy Nelson, clearing $10.25 million from the cap.  The move put the Packers just over $30 million in cap space before the signings of Graham and Wilkerson.

The Packers also have a strong need at cornerback, but the top players at that position already had deals worked out with NFL teams.  It means the Packers will most likely deal with the defensive backfield in the draft. [Read more…]

Packers visit with Wilkerson

March 9, 2018 By Bill Scott

Free-agent defensive end Muhammad Wilkerson left Green Bay after meeting with the Packers on Thursday.  He has scheduled visits with New Orleans and Kansas City.

Wilkerson was released by the New York Jets early in the week and made Green Bay his first stop.  Mike Pettine, who is the Packers new defensive coordinator, served in the same capacity with the Jets when Wilkerson was drafted in the first round of the 2011 NFL Draft.

Shields signs with the Rams

Former Green Bay Packers defensive back Sam Shields is back in the NFL.  He signed with the Los Angeles Rams on Thursday.

Shields hasn’t played since suffering a concussion in the Packers 2016 season opener against Jacksonville.  It was Shields second serious concussion in less than a year.  He sat out the entire 2017 season after being released by the Packers.

If he makes the team, Shields could face discipline from the NFL in relation to his 2016 arrest on charges of possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia.  Shields pleaded no contest to the marijuana charge and the paraphernalia charge was dropped.

Wilkerson set to talk with Packers today

March 7, 2018 By Bill Scott

Free agent defensive end Muhammad Wilkerson is scheduled to visit with the Green Bay Packers today.  His visit on Tuesday was postponed because of weather.

The former Pro Bowler was released by the New York Jets on Monday and now could potentially reconnect with Packers defensive coordinator Mike Pettine.  Pettine was the Jets defensive coordinator in 2011 when they selected Wilkerson in the NFL Draft.

Wilkerson was released by the Jets in a cost-cutting move.  His last contract paid him an average of $17.2 million a year with the Jets.

Wilkerson’s numbers were good prior to signing his first big contract.  Once he signed a five-year, $86 million deal, he put together a pair of disappointing seasons.  Last year he had just 3 1/2 sacks in 13 games.  He had some problems with showing up late for meetings, which won’t likely sit well with the Packers.
