White released to make room for Jones

September 7, 2015 By Bill Scott

Packers logoMyles White finally made the Green Bay Packers 53-man roster in his third year with the team.  Unfortunately for him, the Packers went out and signed WR James Jones who had been released on Saturday by the New York Giants and needed to trim one more player.  That player turned out to be White.

White led the Packers with 16 catches for 157 yards and a pair of touchdown receptions during the preseason.  His work solidified the number-5 spot and drew constant praise from head coach Mike McCarthy.

White originally joined the Packers as an undrafted free agent in 2013 but missed the cut coming out of training camp in both 2013 and 2014.  He was signed back to the practice squad each season.

White will have to clear waivers for the Packers bring him back to the practice squad again, but White may look for work elsewhere, not having made it with the Packers for a third straight year.

Abbrederis’ main contribution comes on special teams

September 4, 2015 By Bill Scott

Jared Abbrederis

Jared Abbrederis

Former Wisconsin wide receiver and Wautoma native, Jared Abbrederis finally played an NFL preseason game for the Green Bay Packers.  He was robbed of that opportunity last season when he went down with a knee injury early in training camp.  This summer, he suffered a concussion on the first day of  training camp and wasn’t available until this week.

Abbrederis caught one pass in last nights 38-10 Green Bay victory, a slant play that went for six years.  His main contribution came as a punt returner.  He averaged 11.7 yards per return on three attempts with a long of 17 yards, which came on his first return attempt.  He had to break some tackles along the way and brought the fans to their feet.

Wisconsin football fans were hoping Abbrederis would get plenty of opportunities in his only game appearance.  Those chances didn’t really come.  Instead, Larry Pinkard took a slant pass and went 77-yards for a touchdown.  Myles White, who grabbed two touchdown passes to continue his solid preseason production and Jeff Janis added another preseason touchdown catch.

Abbrederis played plenty of snaps, but he just didn’t get too many balls thrown his way.  Has he done enough to make the team?  It would probably be a stretch to suggest the Packers will have Abbrederis join the 53-man squad as they break training camp.

But, Abbrederis is a perfect candidate for the teams practice squad, which will be established before the weekend is out.

The Packers are working to establish their 53-man roster now and will have to announce the 22-player cuts by 3pm Saturday afternoon.

Abbrederis returns to practice

September 1, 2015 By Bill Scott

Jared Abbrederis (84)

Jared Abbrederis (84)

Green Bay Packers wide receiver Jared Abbrederis has been out since suffering a concussion on the first day of training camp (July 30).  Today, Abbrederis returned to workouts and it would appear, he’ll play in the preseason finale against the New Orleans Saints on Thursday night.

Abbrederis’ return comes on the day the Packers must reduce their roster from 83 to 75 players.

The Packers selected Abbrederis out of the University of Wisconsin in the 2014 draft.  He spent last season on injured reserve and he has yet to play in a preseason game for the team.

The Packers must decide if Abbrederis can contribute this season and if he is a better option than Myles White, who moved into the fifth receiver spot after catching nine passes for 89 yards against the Eagles last Saturday night.

The Packers will have to make their roster moves by the 3pm deadline today.  They’ll face the New Orleans Saints at home on Thursday night, then will need  to go from 75 to 53 by  3 p.m. on Saturday.

NFL increases size of practice squads

August 20, 2014 By Bill Scott

Tramon Williams started his career on the Packers Practice Squad

The NFL and the NFLPA announced Tuesday, teams can add two more players to their Practice Squad, going from eight to ten players.

The expansion of the Practice Squads covers the next two seasons and means a total of 64 more jobs will be available around the league in each of the next two years.

The league also announced that each team will be able to sign two players “who have earned no more than two accrued seasons of free agency credit.”  Otherwise players who have earned one or more accrued seasons would not be eligible for the practice squad unless they spent fewer than nine games on the 46-man gameday roster during those seasons.

Practice Squad players will earn a minimum salary of $6,300 each week, totaling $107,100 whould they hold on for all 17 weeks of the regular season.

With the Green Bay Packers last season, Myles White, Jake Stoneburner and Jumal Rolle all spent time on the Packers Practice Squad before signing onto the active roster last season.

Packers go heavy on wide receivers in weekend draft

May 12, 2014 By Bill Scott

Green Bay Packers general manager Ted Thompson went heavy on receivers in the 2014 NFL draft and that doesn’t bode well for

some of the receivers battling for jobs on the current roster.

The selection of Davante Adams (round 2), Jared Abbrederis (round 5) and Jeff Janis (round 7) means the Packers are concerned about their receiver depth after losing Greg Jennings and James Jones to free agency the last two years.

Jarrett Boykin entered the week as the No. 3 receiver on the depth chart, but the added competition will push him for that spot.  Myles White, who saw time last season, may have seen his chances of staying in Green Bay go up in smoke.

Adams, after redshirting in 2011, played only two years at Fresno State.  He started all 26 games he played in and is the only player at the school to record multiple 100-reception, 1,000-yard, double-digit-touchdown performances.  Adams finished with 233 receptions for 3,030 yards and 38 touchdowns.  Last season along, he caught 131 passes for 1,718 yards and 24 touchdowns. Packers put Cobb on IR

October 16, 2013 By Bill Scott

The Green Bay Packers put wide receiver Randall Cobb on Injured

Jermichael Finley

Jermichael Finley

Reserve/Designated to return, which means he will be eligible to practice in six weeks and to play in eight.  That means Cobb won’t be eligible to play for the Packers until the Dec. 15 matchup against the Dallas Cowboys in Irving, Texas.

The Packers also put offensive lineman Greg Van Roten  on season ending injured reserve.

Filling those spots on the roster, the Packers signed tight end Jake Stoneburner and wide receiver Myles White off of the teams practice squad.

It’s possible that James Jones (sprained PCL) could still play, but the Packers will prepare to have Jordy Nelson, Jarrett Boykin and Myles White at wide receiver.

Stoneburner’s promotion to the roster means the Packers are likely planning to use Jermichael Finley at wide receiver as well.

The Packers tried to add other receiver help yesterday, trying to sign rookie receiver Tavares King off of Denver’s practice squad.  But the Broncos signed King to the active roster in Denver, keeping him away from the Packers.

During the exhibition season, White finished second on the team with 8 receptions for 90 yards.
