Top ranked Stevens Point falls in NCAA Regionals (College roundup)

In Stevens Point, the top ranked and host Pointers fell to Emory (GA) 76-73 in overtime, ending the Pointers season with just their second defeat.

In the first game of the night, UW-Whitewater knocked off the University of Texas at Dallas 81-63.

Whitewater faces Emory in the Regional Championship game at the Quandt Field House in Stevens Point tonight.  The winner advances to the NCAA Div. 3 final four in Virginia.

Whitewater 69, Oshkosh 57
DePauw 73, Carthage 54

NAIA Men’s D-2

Southeastern (FL) 71, Cardinal Stritch 70  –  Cardinal Stritch is eliminated

Horizon League women’s Tournament

Cardinal Stritch begins NAIA defense today

Cardinal Stritch University begins defense of its NAIA Division 2 National

Championship today in Branson, Missouri.

The Milwaukee area school is the top seed heading into the seven-day event, despite a large roster turnover from last season.

Coming off of last year’s national championship, 5th year coach Drew Diener had 9 new faces on his roster to mesh around returning starters Derek Semenas (Senior from Rosendale/UW-Green Bay) and junior Tony Smith (Fond du Lac).

Semenas averaged 24 points a game this season and was the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference Player of the Year.

Smit (11.3 ppg/5.4 apg) was also a first team all-league choice.

The Wolves (29-4) will play Northern New Mexico (16-15) in the first round at noon today (Wednesday).  Teams must win 5 games in 7 days to win the NAIA National Championship.

Diener named NAIA Coach of the Year

Win a National Title and the awards will follow.

beating William Penn (Iowa) in the NAIA Division II national title game last week.

Diener has been named Rawlings NAIA Division II national coach of the year and the National Association of Basketball Coaches NAIA UPS Coach of the Year.

Senior Darren Moore of Chicago (6’7 center) was named to the NAIA Division II All-American team.  Junior guard Derek Semenas (Rosendale, WI) was selected second-team All-American.

Cardinal Stritch captures NAIA Div. 2 title

Second-seeded Cardinal Stritch College knocked off top-seeded William Penn (Iowa),
73-59, to win the NAIA Division II National Championship in Point Lookout, Missouri.

The Wolves (35-3) captured their first-ever NAIA Division II Men’s basketball title.  They held William Penn to 11 points over the first 15 minutes of the second half.

William Penn connected on just 6 of 32 three-point shots in the loss.
