Packers wrap up training camp, head into regular season mode

August 31, 2020 By Bill Scott

The Green Bay Packers wrapped up Training Camp with a practice inside Lambeau Field on Sunday.  Packers coach Matt LaFleur used the 2 hour, 14 minute practice to get his team ready for the Sept. 13th season opener against the Minnesota Vikings.

Of the 100 or so plays run from scrimmage, the starters got 51 of them.  It would have been more, but a couple of players got nicked up late in the practice and the coach decided to pull the plug.

“They’ve got to realize that two weeks from today we’re going to be playing our first game,” LaFleur said.  “So, they’ve got to stack consistent practices on top of each other.”

The Packers begin regular season planning and practice this week.  Players get a workout on Monday, an off day on Tuesday and won’t practice again until Wednesday.  They’ll spend the rest of this week giving GM Brian Gutekunst as much [Read more…]

Packers bringing Lewis back for another season

March 14, 2019 By Bill Scott

Marcedes Lewis caught only three passes for 39 yards in 16 games last season, but the Green Bay Packers thought enough about his blocking that they decided to bring him back for another season.

Lewis was only targeted four times, catching three of them.

Lewis is familiar with new Packers offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett.  Hackett called plays for two seasons in Jacksonville in 2016 and 2017 and Lewis caught 44 passes for 487 yards and six touchdowns during that time.

Restricted free agent wide receiver Geronimo Allison will also return in 2019 after the Packers tendered him the original-round offer of $2.025 million.  Other teams can offer a contract to Allison, but the Packers would have the opportunity to match it.  If they don’t, they would not be compensated for the loss.

Allison finished last season on injured reserve after recovering from a torn abductor muscle.

The Packers elected not to tender a contract offer to free agent safety Kentrell Brice and neglected to make an offer to free agent Bashaud Breeland.

Packers officially announce Hackett as Offensive Coordinator

January 16, 2019 By Bill Scott

The Green Bay Packers have named Nathaniel Hackett as the teams new offensive coordinator.

Hackett comes to the Packers after spending the majority of the last four seasons with the Jacksonville Jaguars as quarterbacks coach (2015-16) and then offensive coordinator.

In 2017, Hackett guided an offense that finished in the top 10 in the NFL in points per game (No. 5, 26.1), yards per game (No. 6, 365.9), rushing yards per game (No. 1, 141.4), rushing yards per carry (No. 9, 4.29), red-zone TD percentage (No. 2, 64.0%), goal-to-go TD percentage (No. 1, 85.7%), sacks allowed (T-No. 3, franchise-low 24), sacks per pass attempt (No. 6, 4.55%) and average time of possession (No. 5, 31:47).  It was the first time in franchise history that the Jaguars led the league in rushing.

Jacksonville averaged 25.0 points during the 2017 postseason, helping the Jaguars reach the AFC Championship Game.

Prior to Jacksonville, Hackett was the offensive coordinator for the Buffalo Bills from 2013-14.  He joined the Bills after three years at Syracuse.

LaFleur picks Packers new Offensive Coordinator

January 15, 2019 By Bill Scott

After confirming that the Green Bay Packers would retain Mike Pettine as defensive coordinator, new head coach Matt LaFleur has his new offensive coordinator in the fold.

According to multiple reports, former Jacksonville Jaguars offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett will be hired by the Packers.

Nathaniel Hackett is the son of former offensive coordinator Paul Hackett, who learned the West Coast offense from former 49ers Hall of Fame coach Bill Walsh.

Nathaniel Hackett has been an offensive coordinator for seven seasons with Syracuse, the Buffalo Bills and the Jaguars.  He coached under head coach Doug Marrone in each of those stops.

The Jaguars fired Hackett after a 24-21 loss to Buffalo in November.  That loss dropped the Jaguars to 3-8. [Read more…]
