Titans open final four in Fort Wayne

The UW-Oshkosh Titans (27-3) is back in the NCAA Division 3 Final Four and will face Wheaton College (Illinois) in Friday nights semifinals in Fort Wayne, Indiana.

Wheaton College (23-8) knocked off the Titans 86-74 back in November.  Oshkosh hit just 26 of 81 shots from the field in that meeting, including 9 of 39 from three-point distance.

The 27 wins is a program record for the Titans.

Swarthmore College (Pa.) (28-3) faces Christopher Newport University (Va.) (29-3) in the first semifinal.  The winners will square off in Saturday nights championship.

NCAA D-3 Tournament pairings announced

The NCAA Division 3 men’s and women’s basketball pairings were unveiled today.

On the men’s side, WIAC Tournament Champion UW-Platteville (18-10) earned the league’s automatic bid, making their 12th NCAA appearance.  The Pioneers will meet Capital University (Ohio) (20-7) in Rock Island, Illinois.  The Pioneers have won four National Championships in 1991, 1995, 1998 and 1999.

WIAC teams UW-Oshkosh and UW-La Crosse both received at-large bids.  Oshkosh (23-3) is the defending national runner-up but missed a chance to host when the Titans were upset in the WIAC Tournament by UW-Stevens Point.  The Titans will meet Midwest Conference champion Lake Forest College (Ill.) (18-9) in a first round game in Collegeville, Minnesota.  The Titans are making their program-record fourth consecutive NCAA appearance and ninth overall.

UW-La Crosse (17-9) will make its second NCAA appearance will face the University of St. Thomas (Minn.) (22-4) in a first round contest in Lincoln, Nebraska.  The other match-up will feature defending national champion Nebraska Wesleyan University (26-1) and Eureka College (Ill.) (13-14).

In the women’s field, WIAC Champion UW-Oshkosh received an automatic berth into the 64-team field.  The Titans (24-3) will make their fifth NCAA appearance in the last six seasons and 15th overall.  The Titans, won the National Title in 1996 and will host first and second round games.  Oshkosh will meet Pomona-Pitzer College of California (22-5) in its opening game. Oshkosh lays claim to final four spot in men’s basketball

The UW-Oshkosh Titans advanced to the NCAA Division 3 men’s basketball final four for the first time in program history, knocking off Augustana 95-88 in overtime on Saturday.

The Titans (24-7) were tied 76-76 after regulation and then won the overtime period 19-12.

Former Kimberly standout Ben Boots led the Titans with a career-high 36 points, hitting 12 of 23 from the field.  Teammate Brett Wittchow added 19 points and pulled down seven rebounds in the win.

Oshkosh hit 17 of 35 (48.6%) from three-point range as a team and made 24 of 31 (77.4%) at the free throw line.  The 17 made three-point baskets are tied for second most in school history.

The Titans will face Ramapo in Friday’s semifinal game in Salem, Virginia.  Springfield will face Nebraska Wesleyan in the other semifinal with the winners to meet the following day for the D-3 National Championship.

NCAA D-3 basketball tournament is down to 16-teams

The NCAA Division 3 men’s basketball tournament has strong representation in the Sweet 16.  Three teams remain, including Platteville, which will host a four-team sectional on Friday and Saturday nights.

The Pioneers (24-4) will host Nebraska Wesleyan (26-3) (7:30 p.m.) in the second of two games, while fellow WIAC member Stevens Point (21-8) will meet top-ranked Whitman (28-1).  The Pointers captured the WIAC Conference tournament.

Oshkosh (22-7) will face Emory (23-4) of Atlanta in a sectional semifinal in Rock Island, Illinois.

Friday night winners will advance to the finals on Saturday for the right to play in the NCAA Final Four.

The Pioneers are in the Sweet 16 for the first time since 1999 after finishing last in the WIAC (1-13) a year ago.
