Warhawks open play in NCAA D-3 Baseball Regionals today

The UW-Whitwater Warhawks open play Friday afternoon in the NCAA Divison 3 baseball regionals at Prucha Field in Whitewater.

The 12th ranked Warhawks (34-10) earned one of 18 at-large bids into the 58-team field and will host a four-team double-elimination regional.  Whitewater opens today at 3 p.m. against North Central College of Illinois (31-11).  Webster University (Missouri) (31-10) and Bethany Lutheran College (Minnesota) (23-16) makes up the other half of the regional.

The Warhawks are in the NCAA Tournament for the 12th straight season, having previously won Division 3 titles in 2005 and 2014.  They have a total of 22 NCAA appearances.

UW-La Crosse reaches first ever NCAA D3 World Series

It took a pair of wins Sunday in La Crosse, but the UW-La Crosse Eagles earned their first ever trip to the NCAA Division 3 College Baseball World Series.

The Eagles won Game 1, 5-4, on Ben Morgan’s RBI single in the top of the ninth against Coe College (Iowa).

Needing yet another victory against the Kohawks, UW-L found themselves down 4-2 early after surrendering a couple of home runs. Then the Eagles (33-13) got hot, scoring seven runs in the sixth inning en route to a 15-4 Midwest Region-clinching victory.

The No. 20 Eagles will open the D3 World Series Friday against No. 5 Salisbury (Md.) at 6:45pm at Fox Cities Stadium in Appleton.

Stevens Point and Whitewater advance in D-3 winners bracket

Second seeded UW-Stevens Point and third seeded UW-Whitewater will square off in the winners bracket of the NCAA Division 3 Whitewater Regional Tournament today.  Both teams earned opening round victories yesterday

Stevens Point (36-9), which won the WIAC tournament last weekend at Whitewater, came from 4-runs down to beat fifth seeded Benedictine 6-5 in 10-innings.

Whitewater (35-7) got a complete game from senior right-hander Tom Kerndt and knocked off fourth seeded Case Western 2-0.

Top seeded St. Thomas (MN) lost its opening round game 1-0 to sixth seeded St. Scholastica in the opener.

The day 2 schedule follows:

12:00pm  St. Thomas (33-6) vs. Benedictine (32-11)
3:00pm    Case Western (27-13) vs. St. Scholastica (28-9)
6:00pm    UW-Stevens Point (36-9) vs. UW-Whitewater (35-7)

At the Central Regional in Moline, Illinois, top-seeded Webster scored six runs in the third inning and beat Ripon College 7-6 in an opening round game.
