Brewers use the long ball to knock off the Marlins (AUDIO)

September 16, 2017 By Bill Scott

Brewers celebrate one of three 8th inning home runs!

The Milwaukee Brewers clubbed four home runs, including three in their eight run 8th inning to knock off the Miami Marlins 10-2 at Miller Park.

The Brewers played the visitors role in their own ball park.  Eric Thames snapped a 2-2 tie in the 8th with a solo home run, his third in three games.  Neil Walker later followed with a grand slam and eventually, Domingo Santana clubbed a three run home run in the big 8th.

Jeremy Jeffress made his first career start for the Brewers and breezed through the first inning.  But he surrendered two runs in the second to tie the game 2-2.  The Brewers had jumped out to a 2-0 lead on Stephen Vogt’s home run in the top of the second.

After Jeffress, Brewers manager Craig Counsell would use seven more pitchers to close out the victory.

The Brewers kept pace with the division leading Chicago Cubs, who knocked off St. Louis 8-2 earlier in the day in Chicago.  The Brewers remain 3 games behind the Cubs.

The Brewers had 19,369 fans show up for what was supposed to be a road game.  Game two of the series is tonight at Miller Park (6:10 p.m.).  Zach Davies (17-8, 3.67) faces Adam Conley (6-7, 5.23) in the pitching matchup.

Brewers swept by Reds, fall into 3rd place in Central

The Milwaukee Brewers were swept in three games by the last place Cincinnati Reds, dropping the series finale 7-1 on Wednesday at Great American Ball Park.

Reds rookie Luis Castillo allowed a run on four hits over eight innings, striking out 10 and walking nobody to earn his third win of the season.  The only run allowed came in the first on a Neil Walker home run.

The Brewers were outplayed and out scored (21-8) in the series, which saw them fall in to third place in the Central Division, a half game behind the second place St. Louis Cardinals and 4 1/2 games behind the division leading Cubs.  Had the Cubs not dropped the first two games of their series in Pittsburgh, the division may have been out of reach.  Fortunately for the Brewers, they still have plenty to play for between the wild card and the division, despite their laying down in Cincinnati. Garza struggles in Brewers loss to Cardinals

Matt Garza didn’t get any help from his defense, but he also didn’t do himself any favors with his control and the Milwaukee Brewers dropped their series opener 10-2 to the St. Louis Cardinals at Miller Park.

Garza allowed six runs, but only three of them were earned.  Yet he walked five hitters, needing 87 pitches to make it through just 3 1/3 innings.  He fell to 6-8 with a 4.77 ERA.

The loss, coupled with a Chicago Cubs 4-1 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates, dropped the Brewers 3 1/2 games back in the NL Central Division race.

The Brewers had momentum after taking two of three from the Los Angeles Dodgers on the weekend, but some sloppy defense from the start on Tuesday night doomed the Brewers.

Travis Shaw booted a ground ball in the first and Manny Pina dropped an underhand toss from Garza at the plate with a walk sandwiched in between, [Read more…]

Home run ball leads Brewers to comeback win (AUDIO)

August 17, 2017 By Bill Scott

Keon Broxton celebrates one of his two home runs.

The Milwaukee Brewers clubbed five home runs to come-from-behind and beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 7-6 at Miller Park on Thursday.

All seven runs came via the home run.  Centerfielder Keon Broxton clubbed two of the five home runs, giving him 19 for the season.  Neil Walker and Travis Shaw also went yard.  Manny Pina added the biggest of them all in the eighth.  After the Brewers fell behind in the top half of the inning, Pina clubbed a 2-run, opposite field homer to put the Brewers back in front and eventually pull out the win.

The Brewers fell behind 4-0 with Jimmy Nelson struggling early.  But Broxton and Walker clubbed home runs in the bottom half to make it a 4-3 game and the Brewers were right back in it.

Travis Shaw’s 26th home run of the season in the sixth inning pulled the Brewers back to even at 4-4.

The Pirates went up 5-4 in the seventh, but Broxton’s second home run of the game tied the game 5-5. [Read more…]

Brewers get the bats going, win series over Reds

The Milwaukee Brewers came out of their offensive slump and capped off a series win with a 7-4 victory over the Cincinnati Reds on Sunday.

The Brewers scored three runs in the first inning and never trailed.  It’s the 29th time this season that the Brewers have scored two or more runs in the first inning this season, which tops the majors.

The Reds entered the series with the worst pitching staff in bats and the slumping Brewers scored 23 runs on 36 hits in the series.  Newcomer Neil Walker had a pair of singles in his Brewers debut.

Cincinnati did pull within 3-2 when Adam Duvall clubbed a two-run homer off of Matt Garza in the third.

Eric Sogard then tripled into the right-field corner with one out in the fourth and Hernan Perez dropped down a squeeze bunt with a 96-mph fastball coming right at his head.

The Brewers made it 7-2 in the fifth when Domingo Santana clubbed a three run home run, his 19th of the season.

Walker didn’t arrive in Milwaukee until late Saturday night and was penciled into the lineup on Sunday.  The Brewers put lefthander Brent Suter on the 10-day disabled list with a strained left rotator cuff, making room for Walker on the 25-man roster.  To make room on the 40-man roster, the Brewers designated reliever Michael Blazek for assignment.
