Brewers rotational issues continue, fall to Rockies

May 3, 2019 By Bill Scott

Freddy Peralta

The Milwaukee Brewers activated Freddy Peralta before Thursday’s game, giving him the start against the Colorado Rockies.  Things didn’t go so well, leaving one to wonder if Peralta will lose his spot in the rotation.

Peralta allowed four runs in the first inning and nine runs (six earned) in four innings on the way to a 11-6 Brewers loss to the Rockies.  After winning the first two games of the series, the Brewers lost the last two, having to settle for a four-game split.

The Brewers going with Brandon Woodruff, Corbin Burnes and Freddy Peralta in their starting rotation has backfired for the first month of the season.  In 16 outings, 15 of which were starts, have a combined 7.68 ERA. [Read more…]

Brewers fall, Yelich is sidelined

April 29, 2019 By Bill Scott

The Milwaukee Brewers dropped their series finale in New York against the Mets on Sunday, 5-2 at Citi Field.  In the process, star Christian Yelich had to leave the game in the fourth inning with lower back discomfort that he sustained while running the bases.

Brewers manager Craig Counsell said he didn’t think Yelich’s issue was series enough to think about the injured list but thought it would likely keep him out of tonight’s series opener against Colorado at Miller Park.

After trailing 2-0, Mike Moustakas clubbed a two-run homer in the seventh inning to tie the game 2-2. [Read more…]

May 26, 2018 By Bill Scott

Junior Guerra tossed six innings of two-run ball but received a no-decision after Corey Knebel blew a ninth inning save.

Jeremy Jeffress got the win for pitching the 10th inning, improving to 4-0 with a 0.33 ERA.

The Brewers improved to a National League Central Division leading 32-20.

Jose Bautista tied the game for the Mets in the ninth with an RBI single.  Michael Conforto and Amed Rosario homered, while Robert Gsellman took the loss.  The Mets have now dropped three of their last four.

Brewers blanked for 9th time this season

May 25, 2018 By Bill Scott

Things had been looking up for the Milwaukee Brewers offense of late, but you can’t win them all.

The Brewers managed just five hits in a 5-0 loss to the New York Mets in the opener of a four game series at Miller Park.  It’s the 9th time this season that the Brewers were shutout, one more than all of last year.

Zach Davies returned from the disabled list and allowed four runs in four innings to fall to 2-4.  Ryan Braun also returned from the disabled list and went 1-for-4.

The Brewers had their three-game winning streak come to an end.

New York’s Steven Matz entered the game with a 1-3 record and a 4.42 earned run average.  He worked six innings, allowed just four hits (all singles) with three walks and three strikeouts.

Mets leadoff hitter Brandon Nimmo reached base five times, going 4-for-4 with a walk.  Among his four hits was a double and a triple.

Junior Guerra pitches game two of the series for the Brewers tonight against New York’s Noah Syndergaard.

April 16, 2018 By Bill Scott

Wilmer Flores clubbed a walk-off game winning home run in the bottom of the ninth inning as the New York Mets earned a 3-2 win over the Milwaukee Brewers at Citi Field on Sunday.

Brandon Nimmo tied the game in the sixth with a solo shot of his own, off of rookie Taylor Williams.  Jeremy Jeffress and Dan Jennings followed with 2 1/3 innings of scoreless relief to help the Brewers get to the ninth still knotted at 2-2 before Albers came on to work the ninth inning.

Noah Syndergaard struck out 11 over 5 1/3 innings of one-run ball and Jeurys Familia earned the win.  The Mets took the rubber match and improved to 12-2.

Matt Albers was charged with the loss for Milwaukee after giving up the losing run. [Read more…]

Brewers fall in series opener to Mets

April 14, 2018 By Bill Scott

The Milwaukee Brewers clubbed three home runs but still fell to the red-hot New York Mets 6-5 at Citi Field in their series opener Friday night.

Hernan Perez and Ryan Braun each clubbed two run homers and Travis Shaw added a solo shot.  Jesus Aguilar had a three hit night, but it wasn’t enough for the Brewers.

Todd Frazier hit a pair of solo home runs for the Mets, who won their ninth straight game and improved to 11-1 on the season.  Steven Matz pitched into the sixth inning and holding Milwaukee to three earned runs.  Jeurys Familia came away with his seventh save.

Zach Davies dropped to 0-2, giving up five runs on seven hits in 4 1/3 innings.

Game two of the series is tonight (6:10 p.m.).  Chase Anderson (0-1, 3.38) pitches for the Brewers.  Matt Harvey (0-0, 3.60) goes for the Mets.

Junior Guerra pitched six strong shutout innings, leading the Milwaukee Brewers to a 7-1 victory over the New York Mets on Wednesday night at Citi Field.  Guerra made his second start since returning from the disabled list with a calf strain.

It was the first win in the four game series for the Brewers, and just their third win in the last 10 games.

Guerra allowed four hits over six innings, walking three and striking out four while earning his first victory of the season.

Eric Thames, who is showing signs of breaking out of his month long slump, clubbed his 14th home run of the season.  Keon Broxton also went deep for the Brewers, who will try to salvage a split in the series with a victory this afternoon.

Chase Anderson (3-1, 3.72) faces Mets right hander Zack Wheeler (3-2, 3.83) in the pitching matchup.  First pitch is set for 12:10 p.m.

Manny Pina capped off a five-run rally in the eighth inning with a three-run home run to lift the Milwaukee Brewers to a 11-9 win over the New York Mets at Miller Park on Sunday.  It gave the Brewers a three game sweep of the Mets in the series.

The Brewers trailed 7-1 in the fifth and 9-6 in the 8th before the come back.

Orlando Arcia led off with a walk and Jonathan Villar singled.  Hernan Perez clubbed a two run single and Pina finished it with a three-run homer.

Pina called it easily the biggest hit of his career and it came on Mothers Day, with his wife Leny and their two young children in the stands watching. [Read more…]

Nelson, Brewers drop series opener to Mets, 5-2 (AUDIO)

Scooter Gennett

Milwaukee Brewers starter Jimmy Nelson was unable to keep the string of outstanding recent efforts on the hill intact Thursday in a 5-2 loss to the New York Mets.

Nelson (5-5) allowed eight hits and two runs in his five innings of work, however, it was his struggles against lefthanded bats that cause him the most trouble. Mets centerfielder Curtis Granderson led off the game with solo home run, then doubled and scored in the third.

The Brewers were able to battle back to within 2-1 after Kirk Nieuwenhuis scored on an Hernan Perez infield single in the seventh. The inning would be the last for Mets starter Bartolo Colon (5-3), who scattered eight hits and allowed the one run.

Reliever Corey Knebel, fresh off a stint on the 15-day disabled list with an oblique strain, entered for Milwaukee, but two runs on three hits to make it 4-1.

Scooter Gennett brought Milwaukee back within two in the eighth with a RBI single, capping a career-best 4-for-4 effort at the plate. Gennett has hits in six of his last eight at bats and is hitting an impressive .440 in the month of June. [Read more…]

Gomez, Brewers hit hard in New York

Already trailing by a handful of runs, the Milwaukee Brewers lineup took a big hit in the sixth inning of a 5-1 loss to the Mets at Citi Field.

Centerfielder Carlos Gomez was at the plate with a runner on and no one out in the top of the sixth facing a 5-0 deficit when New York starter Noah Syndegaard threw a 96-mph fastball and struck Gomez in the left side of his head.

The pitch caught Gomez in the earflap of his helmet and send him face down into the dirt around home plate. Gomez would leave the game, doing so under his own power. He was diagnosed with a facial contusion, but did not sustain a concussion.

The Brewers (13-25) fell behind early when starter Wily Peralta allowed a leadoff home run to Curtis Granderson. New York (22-16) added another run in the third inning, and three more in the fourth, all off Peralta. The righthander was seeking a second win in his last three starts, but falls to 1-5.
