Three Packers named to the Pro Bowl

January 21, 2020 By Bill Scott

Za’Darius Smith

Green Bay Packers WR Davante Adams, DL Kenny Clark and LB Za’Darius Smith have been named to the NFC Pro Bowl roster today.

Adams (Atlanta Falcons WR Julio Jones), Clark (Los Angeles Rams DT Aaron Donald) and Smith (Chicago Bears LB Khalil Mack) are all replacing players who are unable to participate due to injury.

It marks Adams’ third straight trip to the Pro Bowl (2017-19), making him the first Packer WR to make three straight Pro Bowls since Sterling Sharpe (1992-94).  Despite missing four games due to injury, Adams registered his second career 80-plus-reception season (83 in 2019, 111 in 2018), which is tied for the fourth most in franchise history behind Jordy Nelson (three), Donald Driver (four) and Sharpe (four).

This is Clark’s first trip to the Pro Bowl after being named an alternate in 2018.  He tied his career high from last season with six sacks in 2019, with 4.5 sacks coming in the final four regular-season games.  Clark finished second on the team with a career-best 89 tackles (52 solo).

Smith is making his first career Pro Bowl in his first season with Green Bay.  He registered 13.5 sacks, ranking No. 6 in the NFL and tying for the fifth most in a single season in franchise history (since 1982).  Smith was tied for No. 1 among NFL linebackers in QB hits (37), and No. 2 in total pressures (50.0) during the regular season.

Packers WR Adams named to the Pro Bowl

January 16, 2018 By Bill Scott

Davante Adams

Green Bay Packers wide receiver Davante Adams has been named to the Pro Bowl roster, replacing Atlanta Falcons WR Julio Jones who withdrew because of injury.

This is Adams’ first trip to the Pro Bowl and marks the ninth consecutive year that Green Bay has had an offensive player in the Pro Bowl.  Adams led the Packers with 74 receptions for 885 yards (12.0 avg.) and 10 receiving touchdowns (tied for No. 2 in the NFL) in 2017.

Adams was the only player in the league to register 70-plus receptions and 10-plus receiving TDs during both the 2016 and 2017 seasons.  He joined Jordy Nelson (2014, 2016), Antonio Freeman (1997-98), Sterling Sharpe (1992-94) and Don Hutson (1941-43) as the only players in franchise history to register 10-plus TD catches in consecutive seasons (12 TD catches in 2016).

Adams has recorded the fourth-most receptions (237) and receiving touchdowns (26) by a Green Bay player in their first four seasons in the NFL (according to the Elias Sports Bureau).

Green Bay Packers fullback John Kuhn is apparently heading to his third Pro Bowl.  Oakland fullback Marcel Reece has been suspended for four games for violating the NFL’s performance-enhancing drug policy and Kuhn is the first alternate at the fullback position.

Kuhn remains a steady blocker in the Packers’ offense, with eight carries this season for 25 yards and a pair of touchdowns.

Kuhn is expected to join Aaron Rodgers, Josh Sitton and Clay Matthews at the Pro Bowl game on January 31st in Honolulu.

The Green Bay Packers had just three players selected to the Pro Bowl this season.

Quarterback Aaron Rodgers will make his fifth appearance, despite having his worst season statistically since his first year as a starter back in 2008.  His 95.2 passer rating ranks 12th in the NFL.

Guard Josh Sitton earned his third career Pro Bowl honor.  He is the first Packers guard to be named to consecutive Pro Bowls since Marco Rivera was selected to three straight from 2002 through 2004. [Read more…]
