NFL Scouting Combine kicks off today

February 26, 2019 By Bill Scott

Lucas Oil Stadium

The 2019 NFL Scouting Combine kicks off today at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis.  The first wave of more than 300 prospects will arrive today and begin interviews with teams.

Throughout this week, players will go through medical exams, Wonderlic testing and other evaluation activities.  On-field workouts begin on Friday.

Front office staff and coaches from all 32 NFL teams will be in town to scout players, including the Green Bay Packers.

Green Bay will head into the April NFL Draft with 10 draft picks.  Among the 10 picks are two first round selections.  The Packers are one of two teams to have three selections in the Top 50.  Their needs include edge rusher, tight end, offensive line and safety among others.

The University of Wisconsin had eight players invited to participate in the combine.  Badgers in attendance are T.J. Edwards (LB), Alec Ingold (FB), Andrew Van Ginkel (LB), D’Cota Dixon (S), David Edwards (OT), Beau Benzschawel (OL), Michael Deiter (OL) and Ryan Connelly (LB).

In addition, Green Bay native Max Scharping (Northern Illinois) has also been invited to take part.

Packers looking to add to WR group

March 1, 2018 By Bill Scott

Brian Gutekunst

New Green Bay Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst and head coach Mike McCarthy met with reporters on Wednesday at the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis.

It would appear that the Packers would like to have wide receivers Jordy Nelson and Randall Cobb back and it could come with some financial concessions.

“They still have value,” McCarthy said.  “There’s no question about it.  Their leadership, their instincts, their awareness as players, it increases as their years go on.  You’re always going to measure the physical part of it. That’s the science and chess match of this whole thing.  Jordy and Randall can still play.  But we need to improve.”

Nelson finished last season with 53 catches for 482 yards.  His six touchdown receptions came in the first five games with Aaron Rodgers at quarterback.

Cobb had 66 receptions for 653 yards and four TDs in 15 games.

For Nelson, Gutekunst believes his six touchdowns in the first five games with Aaron Rodgers is a more accurate indication of what he can do for the Packers offense.

The Packers signed Davante Adams to a new contract and they’re hoping to add depth at the position, whether it’s through the draft or the use of free agency.

The Scouting Combine continues today.  Running backs and offensive linemen will work out for NFL scouts today.

NFL Scouting Combine starts today

March 1, 2017 By Bill Scott

Packers GM Ted Thompson

Green Bay Packers general manager Ted Thompson, head coach Mike McCarthy and the rest of the Packers personnel department are in Indianapolis for today’s start of the NFL Scouting Combine.

Thompson, who is getting ready for his 13th season in Green Bay, has been very limited in the amount of free agent acquisition’s he’s made.  Not much is expected to change as free agency gets underway next week.

When Thompson has turned to free agency, things have worked out well.  But Thompson has shown that he won’t overspend and generally does his spending after the other NFL teams are done throwing their money around. [Read more…]

Borland to work out at NFL combine today

February 24, 2014 By Bill Scott

The Green Bay Packers haven’t gone out of their way over the years,

Chris Borland

Chris Borland

making room for University of Wisconsin Badger players on their roster.  But the Packers do need inside linebacker help.  Could the Big Ten’s defensive player of the year, Chris Borland change the pattern?

Despite being undersized, Borland was a four-year starter in Madison and some scouts are comparing him to former NFL inside linebackers Zach Thomas or Chris Speilman.

Borland stands less than six feet tall and he doesn’t have long arms, but he doesn’t feel those qualities would stop him from measuring up with the top linebackers coming out of the college ranks.

We’ll see what’s said and written about Borland once he’s done testing today, one thing we’ve learned from Borland during his stay at Wisconsin is that he’s a player that can’t just be measured by his height and weight.

Ball has tough day at combine

February 25, 2013 By Bill Scott

Wisconsin running back Montee Ball had a “fast” time in mind when running the 40-

yard dash at the Indianapolis Scouting Combine.  But it didn’t work out that way for Ball, who turned in a 40-time of 4.66 seconds.  His stock took a slight hit Sunday, after Ball finished 19th out of 33 running backs in the 40-yard dash.Ball’s fortunes could turn for the better if he turns in a faster 40-time at Wisconsin’s pro day.

Ball has been projected as a 2nd or 3rd round pick in the upcoming April draft.
