Eighteen-year-old Wisconsin Badger sophomore forward Dylan Holloway was selected in the first round of the NHL Draft on Tuesday night, taken 14th overall by the Edmonton Oilers.

It was the third straight season that a UW player has been selected in the first round.

Defenseman K’Andre Miller was taken 22nd overall by the New York Rangers in 2018.  Center Alex Turcotte was selected fifth overall by the Los Angeles Kings in 2019 and right wing Cole Caufield was selected 15th overall by Montreal in 2019.

Holloway becomes the 16th Badger player picked in the first round.  That total trails only five NCAA schools:  Michigan (25), Minnesota (21), Boston College (21), Boston University (20) and North Dakota (20).

Holloway had eight goals and 17 points in 35 games for the Badgers last season.

Holloway joins his father as an NHL draft pick.  Bruce Holloway was a seventh-round selection of the Vancouver Canucks in 1981.  He played two games with the Canucks during a very brief pro career.

Wisconsin represents well at NHL Draft

June 27, 2016 By Bill Scott

Bucky Badger logoAfter Wisconsin’s Luke Kunin (15th overall pick by Minnesota) and Trent Frederic (29th overall by Boston) were selected in the opening round of the NHL Draft on Friday night, three more Badgers were selected on Saturday.

Defenseman JD Greenway went to the Toronto Maple Leafs in the third round with the 72nd pick overall, Max Zimmer was picked by the Carolina Hurricanes in the fourth round with the 104th overall pick and Philip Nyberg went to the Buffalo Sabres in the fifth round with the 129th overall selection.

Wisconsin’s 2016 draft class extends the Badgers’ streak to 19 consecutive years in which one of their incoming or current players were drafted.  The five-member class is also the largest since the 2011 draft also saw five Badgers selected.

Two Badgers taken in NHL Draft

July 1, 2013 By Bill Scott

For the 16th straight year, at least one Wisconsin men’s hockey player heard his name called at the NHL draft as incoming freshmen Grant Besse and Jedd Soleway were both chosen on Sunday at the 2013 NHL Draft in New Jersey.

Besse, a Plymouth, Minnesota native went in the fifth round to the Anaheim Ducks at 147th overall, while Soleway, from Bernon, British Columbia, was drafted by the Phoenix Coyotes in the seventh round at 193rd overall.

The reigning Minnesota Mr. Hockey, Besse earned fame in 2012 when he scored all five of his team’s goals in the state championship game to lead Benilde-St. Margaret’s High School to the state title.

The Badgers boast 149 all-time NHL draft choices and 76 alumni who have actually skated in the NHL.  The 2013-14 Badgers now boast nine NHL draft picks on the roster.
