Mike Eaves

the Michigan Wolverines at the Kohl Center.

The Badgers are coming off a weekend split with Alaska Anchorage in non-conference play last weekend on home ice.  Jake McCabe scored the game-winning goal on Saturday to salvage the series split.

The Badgers have put together a 10-1-1 record at the Kohl Center this season.  Wisconsin is in the midst of a school record 12-game home stand and has outscored their opponents 34-15.

The series is the first multi-game series between the two teams in 33 years.  The last time the two teams met, Wisconsin and Michigan played to a 4-4 tie on Nov. 26, 2010 at the Kohl Center.

Michigan is winless in its last four games, playing for the first time since losing twice in outdoor games, Dec. 27-28 to Western Michigan at Comerica Park in Detroit.

The Badgers will be without sophomore center Nic Kerdiles, who suffered a shoulder injury in Saturday’s win against Anchorage.  Kerdiles is fourth in team scoring with 8 goals and 9 assists.

Badgers’ Kerdiles set for U-20 World Junior Hockey Championships (AUDIO)

December 26, 2013 By Bill Scott

While the Wisconsin men’s hockey team returns to the ice this weekend against Alabama-Huntsville at the Kohl Center, the Badgers will be

Nic Kerdiles

playing without sophomore center Nic Kerdiles.  Kerdiles is in Malmo, Sweden, site of the U20 IIHF World Junior Hockey Championships that start today and run through Jan. 5, 2014.

The tournament if full of players that have been drafted over the past couple of years by NHL franchises, including Kerdiles, a second round selection of the Anaheim Ducks.

This event has had a Wisconsin flavor to it over the years.  Mike Eaves coached the 2004 US squad that won its first gold medal in the event.  Former Badgers’ Ryan Suter, Jake Dowell and Jeff Likens were on that squad.

In 2010, another ex-Badger, Derek Stepan, captained the U-S to its second gold medal.  Last year, current UW defenseman Jake McCabe was captain of Team USA when it won the gold medal in Russia.

Canada won five straight gold medals from 2005-2009.  The United States then beat the Canadians in overtime to win gold in 2010.

The United States, Canada, Russia and Sweden are the favored teams, but Finland, Switzerland, Slovakia and the Czech Republic will give the top teams a run for their money. [Read more…]

Cloud State 4-1 in the WCHA’s Final Five semi-finals, while Colorado College blanked Minnesota 2-0 in the other semi-final.

Joseph LaBate, John Ramage, Nic Kerdiles and Tyler Barnes all scored goals for the Badgers (21-12-7) who will play for the Broadmoor Trophy tomorrow night in St. Paul.  The Badgers haven’t won the league’s tournament title since 1998.

Joel Rumpel made 30 saves for Wisconsin, which has scored a total of 24 goals during their 5-game win streak.

The Badgers and St. Cloud State are both on the at-large NCAA Tournament bubble.  They could still get into the NCAA Tournament even if they lose, but that’s a bit of a stretch.  Mike Eaves team needs to win Saturday night to make sure they’re in with the automatic bid.

Wisconsin and Colorado College have 2-games head to head.  CC won both contests Nov. 2nd and 3rd

Kerdiles debuts tonight for hockey Badgers

November 30, 2012 By Bill Scott

The long-awaited debut of Wisconsin Badger freshman forward Nic Kerdiles is

Nic Kerdiles

finally here.  Kerdiles has been serving a 10-game NCAA suspension for a violation of the organization’s amateur rules regarding impermissible benefits.

His appearance in the Badger lineup tonight couldn’t have come at a better time.  Wisconsin has struggled to a 1-7-2 start, 1-5-2 in the WCHA.

Wisconsin coach Mike Eaves is excited to have Kerdiles back, but he also wants to make sure the Kerdiles doesn’t try to carry the team on his back and everyone needs to chip in. [Read more…]
