Injuries force Brewers into more roster moves

May 9, 2018 By Bill Scott

All-Star closer Corey Knebel

The Milwaukee Brewers made a handful of injury-related roster moves on Wednesday, prior to their series finale against the Cleveland Indians at Miller Park.

Starting pitcher Wade Miley, who suffered an oblique strain in the first inning of Tuesday nights 3-2 win, was placed on the 10-day disabled list.

The Brewers filled Miley’s roster spot by reinstating All-Star closer Corey Knebel.  Knebel will be in the bullpen Wednesday afternoon for the series finale against the Indians after missing time with a hamstring injury.

Utility infielder Nick Franklin was called up on Tuesday, then suffered a leg injury in his first game.  He was placed on the 10-day disabled list today as well.  The Brewers filled Franklin’s spot on the roster by recalling Tyler Saladino from the minor leagues.

Brent Suter tossed 4 2/3 innings of two-run ball after coming in for injured starter Wade Miley, leading the Milwaukee Brewers to a 3-2 win over the Cleveland Indians on Tuesday night at Miller Park.

Suter also helped himself with a 430+foot blast to dead center field off of AL Cy Young Award winner Corey Kluber.

Kluber (5-2) allowed three runs on five hits over six innings.  He also served up a two-run homer to Travis Shaw and has now allowed eight homers over his last four games.

Suter entered the game with one out in the first after Wade Miley suffered a strained right oblique.  He allowed five hits, including a pair of solo home runs to Jose Ramirez and Francisco Lindor, striking out five.  He helped hand the Indians their fourth straight loss. [Read more…]

Chase Anderson got the start and pitched two innings, allowing one hit and striking out one.  Of the 19 pitches he threw, 18 were strikes.

Zach Davies will make his first appearance of the spring today when the Brewers face the San Francisco Giants.

Brewers slugger Ryan Braun has played outfield but will make his first start at first base today.

Bullpen caves as Brewers fall to Giants (AUDIO)

June 6, 2017 By Bill Scott

The Milwaukee Brewers bullpen suffered its 17th loss of the season which easily leads the Major Leagues.  San Francisco scored two runs in the 8th and three more in the ninth to pull out a 7-2 win over the Brewers in their series opener at Miller Park on Monday night.

The Brewers dropped to 1-3 on their home stand and 15-18 at Miller Park this season.

The Brewers got both of their runs in the first inning, on a sacrifice fly and a throwing error.  Giants starter Jeff Samardzija quickly settled in, retiring 19 straight hitters.  That streak ended when Hernan Perez doubled with one out in the seventh, but Samardzija struck out Nick Franklin and Jonathan Villar to end the threat.

Samardzija ended up pitching 7 2/3 innings, holding the Brewers to six hits and one earned run while striking out 10.

Eric Sogard had two of the Brewers six hits out of the leadoff spot as he continues to earn more playing time. [Read more…]

Brewers claim Ex-Rays utility player

April 6, 2017 By Bill Scott

The Milwaukee Brewers claimed utility player Nick Franklin off waivers from the Tampa Bay Rays on Wednesday.  He’s expected to join the team on Friday as the Brewers open a three-game series against the Chicago Cubs at Miller Park.  They’ll have to cut one player from their 25-man roster by then.

To make room on the 40-man roster, the Brewers designated reliever Michael Blazek for assignment.

In 60 games last season, the switch-hitting Franklin hit .270 with six homers and 26 RBI.

Franklin was a first-round draft pick in 2009 by Seattle out of high school. [Read more…]
