Packers officially release LB Nick Perry

March 12, 2019 By Bill Scott

Nick Perry

The Green Bay Packers made it official on Tuesday, announcing the release of veteran linebacker Nick Perry.

Perry recorded a career-low 1.5 sacks in nine games last season and ended the season on injured reserve for the third time in his seven seasons with the Packers.

Perry was scheduled to collect a $4.8 million roster bonus on March 15th, which the Packers are now off the hook for.

Perry’s $11 million salary this year, as well as the final two years of his contract, are now eliminated.  But the Packers are responsible for his pro-rated signing bonus of $7.4 million.  It means they realize a $3.6 million gain in salary cap space for the upcoming season. [Read more…]

Packers GM says the team’s plan includes TE Jimmy Graham

February 28, 2019 By Bill Scott

Jimmy Graham

It would appear that tight end Jimmy Graham will be in the Green Bay Packers plans for the upcoming 2019 season.  Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst indicated as much during his session with reporters at the NFL Scouting Combine on Wednesday.

“Jimmy had a productive year for us last year,” Gutekunst said.  “Was really, really proud of him.  He fought through a lot of things just to be out there.  Guys who have played as long as he has don’t have to do that.  His professionalism was on display each and every day, and I look forward to seeing what he can do for us this year.”

Graham finished the 2018 season with 55 catches for 636 yards and two touchdowns.  He routinely missed Wednesday practices during the second half of the season because of a knee issue.

Graham is scheduled to collect a $5 million roster bonus March 15.

Gutekunst was also asked about veterans Clay Matthews, Randall Cobb and Nick Perry, but didn’t offer any insight into their futures with the Packers.

Perry to I.R., out for the year

November 24, 2018 By Bill Scott

Nick Perry

The Green Bay Packers placed outside linebacker Nick Perry on injured reserve, ending his season.  Perry missed the last game against Seattle with a knee injury.  He finishes the season with just 1 1/2 sacks and 15 tackles.

The Packers promoted their seventh-round draft pick out of Californian, defensive lineman James Looney to the active roster from the practice squad.

Looney gives the Packers a little help on the defensive line after Mike Daniels went down with a foot injury and could be out for the remainder of the season.

The Packers will face the Minnesota Vikings at U.S. Bank Stadium on Sunday night.

Sloppy performance leads to Packers loss

September 24, 2018 By Bill Scott

Mo Wilkerson could be lost for the season

The Washington Redskins jumped out to a quick lead and held on to knock off the Green Bay Packers 31-17 in DC on Sunday.

The Redskins racked up 323 yards and 28 points in the first half, taking a 28-10 lead into the locker room at halftime.

The Packers defense tightened in the second half, but the offense had problems with dropped passes and penalties and never could get on track.

Even Aaron Rodgers struggled with his accuracy early and finished 27-44 for 265 yards and two touchdowns.  Wide receiver Randall Cobb had one of his worst days as a pro, dropping two passes and fumbling.  Prior to the fumble, the Packers were driving with 5 1/2 minutes left to play and a touchdown would have closed the gab to four points.

The Packers have played in rain and snow and cold before, yet they struggled to handle the wet conditions on Sunday. [Read more…]

Bulaga cleared to return to practice with the Packers

August 3, 2018 By Bill Scott

Bryan Bulaga

Green Bay Packers right tackle Bryan Bulaga was activated off the physically unable to perform list on Friday, less than nine months after he tore the ACL in his right knee.

“He just passed his physical today, so Bryan Bulaga will practice in a limited-return mode,” Packers coach Mike McCarthy said Friday at his press conference.  “I know he’s excited about the news that he got this morning from Dr. McKenzie.

The move will allow Bulaga to ease his way back and be ready to go for the regular season opener against the Chicago Bears on September 9 at Lambeau Field.

Jason Spriggs, Kyle Murphy and Byron Bell had been splitting time at right tackle with Bulaga doing some individual drill work on the sidelines.

Bulaga has two years left on a five-year, $33.75 million contract.  He’s set to earn $6.75 million this season.

It leaves Nick Perry (ankle) as the only player in camp yet to practice.  McCarthy told reporters that Perry remains on the PUP.

Perry, Bulaga to open on PUP

July 26, 2018 By Bill Scott

Nick Perry

According to an ESPN report, Green Bay Packers outside linebacker Nick Perry and right tackle Bryan Bulaga will start training camp on the physically unable to perform list (PUP).

Perry had offseason ankle surgery and didn’t participate in any offseason workouts.  It’s not known if Perry had a setback, or if he’s simply following a rehab plan.

Bulaga had ACL surgery last year and wasn’t expected to be ready to go for the start of training camp back then.

Clark calling it quits

Wide receiver Michael Clark was the talk of training camp a year ago.  His 6’6 height and ability to go up and get balls, caught the attention of many, after playing just one season of college football at Marshall.  Clark appeared in two games last season, catching four passes for 41 yards. Packers secure much needed victory

November 13, 2017 By Bill Scott

Brett Hundley

Brett Hundley threw for 212 yards and a touchdown to collect his first NFL win and secure a much needed victory for Green Bay.  The Packers snapped a three-game losing streak by beating the Chicago Bears 23-16 at Soldier Field on Sunday.

Hundley threw a 17-yard touchdown to Davante Adams to give the Packers a 23-13 lead with 5:29 left to play and the Packers (5-4) held on for the win, beating the Bears (3-6) for the eighth time in the last nine games.

The win was the first for the Packers since they last beat Dallas back on October 8.  Aaron Rodgers broke his collarbone against the Vikings one week later and the Packers have been winless until Sunday.

Hundley completed 18 of 25 passes and Ty Montgomery ran for a 37-yard touchdown in the second quarter.  But the Packers ended up losing both Montgomery (ribs) and starting tailback Aaron Jones (knee) to injury.  Jamaal Williams came in to rush for 67 yards on 20 carries and the Packers totaled 160 yards on 37 carries. Packers health is slowly improving

November 1, 2017 By Bill Scott

Don Barclay

The Green Bay Packers don’t have to release their first official injury report of the week until Thursday.  The health of their team has improved slightly in their bye week.

The Packers returned to practice on Tuesday and two starters appear ready to return to action.  Safety Morgan Burnett (hamstring) and left guard Lane Taylor (ankle) practiced with the team.

Taylor’s return could give the Packers their entire starting offensive line back for Monday nights game against the Detroit Lions.  That would be good as quarterback Brett Hundley makes his second start with the team.

The Packers did have a number of defensive players still sidelined by injury.  Inside linebacker Joe Thomas (ankle), outside linebacker Nick Perry (unknown), defensive tackle Quinton Dial (chest), safety Kentrell Brice (ankle) and outside linebacker Ahmad Brooks (back) did not practice on Tuesday.

Barclay signs with Detroit

Veteran guard Don Barclay, who was released by the Packers last week, signed Tuesday with the Detroit Lions.  Barclay rejoins former Packers guard T.J. Lang, who signed a free agent deal with the Lions in the off-season.

Bakhtiari, Bulaga doubtful for tonight

September 28, 2017 By Bill Scott

Davon House ruled out of tonight’s game with Chicago.

Green Bay Packers starting tackles, David Bakhtiari and Bryan Bulaga are both listed as doubtful for tonight’s game against the Chicago Bears at Lambeau Field.

Bakhtiari hasn’t played since the season opener against Seattle, when he strained his hamstring.  Bulaga aggravated his sore ankle in last Sunday’s win over the Cincinnati Bengals.

The problem for the Packers is depth.  Kyle Murphy (foot) and Jason Spriggs (hamstring) have both been placed on injured reserve.  Justin McCray got some playing time at right tackle but has little experience on the left side, which is where he will likely be if the two starters can’t go tonight.

Bakhtiari and Bulaga both practiced the last two days but both were limited.  Bakhtiari wants to make sure when he returns, he’s back for good.  Coming back too soon and then not being able to stay on the field isn’t something he wants to go through.

Adam Pankey started the season on the Packers practice squad.  There’s a chance he could be starting tonight as well.  The Packers added some backup help when they signed Ulrick John off of Arizona’s practice squad.

 Cobb set to return

It appears that wide receiver Randall Cobb will play on Thursday night.

On defense, both Nick Perry and Mike Daniels are questionable.  Perry would be playing with a club cast on his broken hand.

Davon House (quadriceps) is the only player that has been ruled out of the game.

Packers linebacker Perry headed for hand surgery

September 21, 2017 By Bill Scott

Nick Perry & Clay Matthews

For the second time in as many years, Nick Perry is headed for hand surgery.  The Green Bay Packers starting outside linebacker will have the procedure something this week.

Perry missed two games late last season when he needed screws placed into several broken fingers on his left hand.  He returned to the lineup with a club cast and tallied three sacks in the last two games to finish with a career-high 11 for the season.

Packers coach Mike McCarthy wouldn’t say if it’s the same hand or even the same injury and he told the media at his Thursday press conference that a timeline for Perry’s return won’t be established until they get through the surgery.

Perry signed a five-year, $60 million contract during the offseason.  Perry was the 28th overall pick in the 2012 draft and if he doesn’t play in Sunday’s game against the Bengals, it means he won’t play in all 16 regular season games for the sixth straight season.

The Packers do get help with recently acquired Ahmad Brooks, who was cleared from the teams concussion protocol and returned to the practice field on Wednesday.  He sustained the concussion early in the opener against Seattle and is expected to have a larger role this week.
