Wisconsin women routed by Maryland

The Wisconsin women’s basketball team started out strong, holding a 20-15 lead after the first quarter against 5th-ranked Maryland.

The Terrapins blew the game open in the second quarter, outscoring the Badgers 34-10 and going on to a 90-65 win at the Kohl Center on Wednesday night.

The Badgers (6-11, 2-5 Big Ten) got 22 points from Senior guard Nicole Bauman.  Bauman hit four-of-eight from beyond the arc and nine-of-16 overall.

The Terrapins improved to 17-2 on season, 6-1 in Big Ten play.

Women’s basketball roundup

MarquetteGoldenEagles2The Marquette Golden Eagles captured their second Big East Conference win, rolling to a 80-64 win over Butler in Indianapolis on Sunday.

Freshman Allazia Blockton scored 17 of her 18 points in the second half for Marquette.  Natisha Hiedeman added 17 points and Erika Davenport scored 16 as the Golden Eagles improved to 7-11 overall, 2-5 in the Big East Conference.

The Golden Eagles entered halftime with a lead for the first time in conference play, holding a 32-27 advantage.

Marquette shot 49.2% (32-65) from the field, including a red hot 57.1% (20-35) in the second half.  The Golden Eagles return home to open a four-game homestand starting Friday against Providence. [Read more…]

Badger women see their rally fall short

A fourth-quarter comeback fell short for the Wisconsin women’s basketball team, falling to the Iowa Hawkeyes 57-54 at the Kohl Center on Wednesday night.

The Badgers outscored the Hawkeyes 19-6 in the final quarter, but Nicole Bauman and Dakota Whyte missed long shots in the final seconds that would have sent the game to overtime.

Bauman scored her one-thousandth career point to lead the Badgers with 16 points.

Ally Disterhoft scored 18 for Iowa (13-4, 3-2 Big Ten).  The Badgers fell to 6-9 overall and 2-3 in Big Ten play.

Badger women open Big Ten play with win

Motion WThe Wisconsin women’s basketball team opened Big Ten play with a 73-69 win over the Indiana Hoosiers on New Years Eve at the Kohl Center.

Wisconsin (5-6, 1-0 Big Ten) led by as many as 10 points in the game, but the Hoosiers closed the gap to two-points with 2:16 to play.  Two offensive rebounds set up Nicole Bauman’s 3-pointer with 53-seconds left to put the Badgers up five-points with 53-seconds left.

Indiana would get no closer than four points the rest of the way as the Badgers went 6-for-8 from the free throw line to seal the win.

Bauman scored 12 of her team high 24 points in the fourth quarter, including 6-for-6 at the free throw line.

Fellow senior Dakota Whyte added 17 points for the Badgers, who will travel to East Lansing to face 24th ranked Michigan State on Sunday afternoon.

Badger women end 6-game slide

The Wisconsin women’s basketball team ended a 6-game losing streak, winning their Big Ten regular season finale, 62-56 at Penn State on Sunday in University Park, Pa.

Nicole Bauman poured in 22 points for the Badgers (9-19, 5-13).

With the win, the Badgers are the 11th seed in the Big Ten Tournament.  Wisconsin will play the No. 14-seed, Purdue at the Sears Centre Arena in Hoffman Estates, Illinois at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday night.

The Badgers shot 55% from the field in the first half but cooled down in the second (28%).  But the Badgers still managed to hang on for the win.

Badger late rally falls short at Iowa

The Wisconsin women’s basketball team saw their second-half rally come up short, falling to 17th ranked Iowa 78-74 in Big Ten Conference action in Iowa City, Iowa.

The Hawkeyes (22-6 overall, 13-4 Big Ten) led by as many as 13 points with just 3:27 to play.  The Badgers (8-19, 4-13) stormed back and cut the deficit to just three twice with less than a minute to play before Iowa sealed its four-point victory.

Wisconsin finished the game shooting 48.2 percent from the field and 55.6 percent from beyond the arc (10 of 18).

Four Badgers scored in double figures, led by a double-double from senior Jacki Gulczynski with 19 points on 5 of 7 shooting from 3-point range and 11 rebounds.  Junior Nicole Bauman added 18 points for the Badgers, who close out their Big Ten regular season at Penn State on Sunday.

Women’s basketball: Badgers & Golden Eagles both earn wins

The Wisconsin Badger women’s basketball team snapped a four-game losing streak, knocking off Illinois 73-62 in Big Ten action in Champaign, Ill.

It’s the second Big Ten Conference road victory of the season for the Badgers (8-13, 4-7 Big Ten).  The Badgers surpassed their conference win total from the last two seasons and earned one more road win than they had all of last season.

The Badgers led by as many as 18 points in the win.  Nicole Bauman finished with a game-high 21 points, her third straight game with 20 or more points.  19 of Bauman’s 21 points came in the second half, when she went 5-of-9 from three-point range.

The Badgers also out-rebounded Illinois 50-35.

Marquette 80, Georgetown 73

In Milwaukee, the Golden Eagles earned their first Big East Conference win this season as senior Arlesia Moore scored a career high 30 points for Marquette.

Moore was a perfect 17-for-17 at the free throw line, which set program records for attempts and makes.

Freshman Kenisha Bell added 23 points and first-year head coach Carolyn Kieger earned her first career Big Est win.

Bauman poured in 31 but Badgers fall to Buckeyes

Nicole Bauman scored a career high 31 points and tied a school record with eight three-pointers but the Wisconsin Badgers fell to Ohio State 85-73 in women’s Big Ten college basketball at the Kohl Center on Thursday night.

The Badger junior scored 16 of the Badgers’ 33 first-half points and finished the game, shooting 11-of-19 (57.9 percent) from the field, including 8-of-13 (61.5 percent) from beyond the arc.  Bauman broke the old mark of seven 3-pointers, set by Kyle Black vs. Holy Cross on Dec. 2, 2001.

Wisconsin (7-13, 3-7 Big Ten) finished the game shooting 44.4 percent (28-63), its fifth-straight game shooting better than 42 percent.  UW went 12-of-24 (50 percent) from three-point range.  The twelve 3-pointers tied the UW school record and set a new Kohl Center mark, breaking the old record of 11 set four times before.

Ohio State jumped out to a 15-2 lead in the first four minutes of the game.  The Badgers could only climb to within seven points the rest of the way.

The Badgers went to the line just nine times in the game, making 5 of the 9 free throws.

Wisconsin returns to action Sunday when they face Illinois in Champaign.  Tipoff is set for 2 p.m.
