Nelson gets two-year deal with Oakland

March 16, 2018 By Bill Scott

Jordy Nelson

Just two days after he was released by the Green Bay Packers, wide receiver Jordy Nelson has agreed to a two-year deal with the Oakland Raiders.

Nelson’s deal is reportedly worth $15 million, including $13 million in guaranteed money.

Nelson spent 10 seasons with the Packers but saw his production drop last season after Aaron Rodgers suffered a broken collarbone.  With Rodgers, Nelson had six touchdown receptions in the first five games.  Once Brett Hundley took over, Nelson didn’t catch a single touchdown pass the rest of the season.

He finished the season with 53 receptions for 482 yards and six touchdowns.

The Raiders also added running back Doug Martin and released wide receiver Michael Crabtree.

Wolf is headed for Cleveland

January 10, 2018 By Bill Scott

Eliot Wolf

When the Green Bay Packers hired Brian Gutekunst as their next general manager, they passed on Eliot Wolf.  Now Wolf is taking his expertise with him to Cleveland, joining John Dorsey and the Cleveland Browns.

Wolf was a 14-year veteran of the Packers scouting team.  He had an offer to remain with the Packers and could have joined Reggie McKenzie and Jon Gruden in Oakland as well.  But in the end, after meeting with the Browns on Tuesday, he decided that would be the best place for him.

Wolf served as the Packers director of football operations from 2016 to 2017.  He most likely would have been named as an assistant GM in Green Bay, working alongside Gutekunst.  But Wolf being passed over for the position that his father Ron Wolf once held, likely played a factor in his decision to move.

It’s not a matter of whether or not Wolf becomes a GM in the NFL some day.  It’s more a matter of when.  Wolf was qualified for the Packers opening and will continue to get other opportunities moving forward. [Read more…]

Hundley likely to miss preseason game at San Francisco (AUDIO)

August 20, 2016 By Bill Scott

Brett Hundley

Brett Hundley

Things certainly haven’t gone according to plan for Green Bay Packers backup quarterback Brett Hundley.

After missing two weeks of Training Camp with a bad ankle, Hundley returned last week, only to re-injure his ankle early in the second quarter of Thursday’s 20-12 exhibition win over the Oakland Raiders.

Hundley spoke with reports on Saturday and was moving around well.  But Hundley’s ankle is still sore enough that Packers coach Mike McCarthy said the second year quarterback would be hard-pressed to play at all in the third preseason game against San Francisco. [Read more…]

DE Wilson signs with Raiders

March 29, 2014 By Bill Scott

After playing in just eight games with the Green Bay Packers last season, free agent DE C.J. Wilson has signed with the Oakland

C.J. Wilson

Raiders.

Wilson gets a fresh start in Oakland after once playing as a starter in Green Bay.   Wilson’s most productive season came in 2012 when he had 24 tackles and 2.5 sacks in 11 games with the Packers.

The addition of Julius Peppers and the resigning of DL/LB Mike Neal helped make Wilson’s value to the Packers diminish even further.  The Packers also will count on Mike Daniels, Datone Jones, Jerel Worthy and Josh Boyd.

The Raiders also added another free agent on Friday, signing former Jacksonville Jaguars RB Maurice Jones-Drew to a three-year deal.

Raiders waive former Packers’ QB Flynn

After acquiring Matt Flynn from Seattle to take over as the starting quarterback in Oakland, the Raiders waived Flynn today.  Flynn had recently been demoted to third string after he struggled in his only start against Washington.  Flynn was filling in for Terrelle Pryor, who had to sit out with a concussion.

Flynn was sacked seven times, fumbled twice and tossed one interception against the Redskins in Week 4.  He was demoted after the game and replaced by undrafted rookie Matthew McGloin as the backup.

The Raiders (2-3) sent a fifth-round pick in 2014 and a conditional pick in 2015 to the Seahawks for Flynn.

Green Bay Packers coach Mike McCarthy was asked at his Monday news conference if he would like to see Flynn return to the Packers.  McCarthy said he’s happy with his current quarterback room.

Bishop starts his free agent tour

June 19, 2013 By Bill Scott

Desmond Bishop

Desmond Bishop

As expected, it didn’t take long for teams to start showing interest in now free agent linebacker Desmond Bishop.

Bishop broke the news himself talking to reporters Monday night and Tuesday that the Minnesota Vikings would be first on his list of teams to visit.  That visit was expected to be Tuesday, though Vikings head coach Leslie Fraizer wouldn’t confirm.

Ian Rapoport of NFL.com reported that Kansas City would be second on the list, if he left Minnesota without a contract.  The Chiefs hired former Green Bay Director of Football Relations and Scouting Director John Dorsey as their GM.  A few other teams have had reported interest in Bishop including the Oakland Raiders.  Oakland’s GM in Reggie McKenzie, who was in the Packers front office from 1994 to 2011.

The Packers released Bishop on Monday after 6-seasons in the league.  Bishop was set to make nearly $3.5 million in based salary in 2013.  He spent all of 2012 on the IR with a severe hamstring injury.

Flynn headed for Oakland

April 1, 2013 By Bill Scott

Former Green Bay Packers quarterback Matt Flynn spent one-year in Seattle and today was dealt to the Oakland Raiders for two draft picks, a 5th

rounder in 2014 and a conditional pick in 2015.

The Raiders have gone through 15 different quarterbacks over the last decade.  They’re still trying to finalize  a deal that would send Carson Palmer to the Arizona Cardinals.

Flynn had signed a three-year, $26-million dollar deal with the Seattle Seahawks last season, then failed to beat out Russell Wilson for the job.

Flynn has made just two NFL starts in five seasons as a pro, but will be given an opportunity to win the Raiders starting job.  His competition is expected to be 2011 supplemental draft pick Terrelle Pryor.

The Raiders will eventually save about $6-million on this years salary cap when a Carson Palmer deal is finalized.
