Brewers fall to Phillies for third straight loss

Craig Counsell

The Milwaukee Brewers squandered several opportunities to score runs in their series opener in Philadelphia on Monday night, falling 7-4 to the Phillies.

“Collectively, we didn’t play well enough to win,” said manager Craig Counsell after the game.  “We didn’t play good enough defense, we didn’t pitch well enough and we left too many guys out there (on the bases).  We didn’t do enough to get this one, and (the Phillies) deserved it.”

Lorenzo Cain, who had been scuffling himself, had a five hit night, and Mike Moustakas hit his 10th home run of the season.  But the Brewers still left 15 runners on base on the night.

Freddy Peralta got the start for the Brewers but a high pitch count led to him pitching just four innings.  Peralta allowed two runs. [Read more…]

Brewers drop series finale to Phillies

July 17, 2017 By Bill Scott

Philadelphia’s Nick Williams clubbed a 7th inning grand slam off of left-handed reliever Tyler Webb to send the Phillies to a 5-2 win over the Milwaukee Brewers in the series finale at Miller Park on Sunday.

With the loss, the Brewers saw their lead over the Chicago Cubs in the NL Central fall to 4 1/2 games before heading on a 10-game road trip that starts in Pittsburgh on Monday night and continues in Philadelphia and Washington.

Rookie Brett Phillips gave the Brewers a 2-1 lead in the fifth while pinch hitting for starting pitcher Matt Garza.  Phillips drove a 1-0 pitch from Phillies starter Jeremy Hellickson out to right for his first career home run and a 2-1 Brewers lead.

Garza finished his day allowing one run on three hits.

The Brewers had chances in both the eighth and ninth innings but came up empty.

The Brewers still took two of three from the Phillies and open a series in Pittsburgh on Monday night against the Pirates.  Brent Suter (1-1, 2.96) pitches for the Brewers.  The Pirates will counter with right-hander Chad Kuhl (3-6, 4.96).

The Milwaukee Brewers scored eight runs in the second inning and went on to post a 9-6 win over the Philadelphia Phillies in their series opener at Miller Park on Friday night.

Orlando Arcia and Ryan Braun (grand slam) clubbed home runs in the big second inning as the Brewers moved to a season-best 10 games over .500 (51-41).  With the Cubs beating Baltimore 9-8 on Friday night, the Brewers remain 5 1/2 games up in the National League Central Division race.

Wily Peralta

Wily Peralta

The Milwaukee Brewers had a chance to win their fifth series of the season with a victory Sunday in Philadelphia.

Milwaukee had out hit the Phillies, but trailed 3-0 after four innings. Starter Wily Peralta allowed a ground rule double, a play that originally was called a home run but overruled on a replay review due to fan interference, and was removed with runners on second and third with one out.

Reliever Neil Ramirez entered and promptly served up back-to-back home runs, busting the game open with five runs in the fifth to make it 8-0.

The Brewers would go on to lose 8-1 to split the four-game series.

Peralta (3-7) took the loss and ran his ERA to 6.79. The righthander surrendered six runs, five earned, on seven hits in 4 1/3 innings. He allowed a solo home run in third inning. [Read more…]

Reports: Phillies discussing trade with Brewers

January 23, 2015 By Bill Scott

Milwaukee Brewers logoThe Philadelphia Phillies are reportedly in discussions to send closer Jonathan Papelbon to the Milwaukee Brewers, according to multiple media reports.

Papelbon’s contract calls for a $13 million salary this season with a $13 million option for 2016 that vests if he finishes 48 games this year.  It also includes a no-trade clause that can block deals to 17 teams, including the Brewers.  It could be waived however if the vesting option for 2016 becomes guaranteed.

The Phillies are in rebuilding mode and are dumping salaries.  They’ve already trimmed $40 million off of their estimated opening day payroll.

The 34-year-old Papelbon had 39 saves and a 2.04 ERA last season.  In ten years in the majors, Papelbon has recorded 325 saves and a 2.37 ERA, while recording 721 strikeouts in 627.3 innings.
