Browns to add safety Morgan Burnett

The Cleveland Browns have come to an agreement with veteran safety Morgan Burnett.  ESPN is reporting the deal with the former Green Bay Packers safety is for two years.

Burnett will reportedly compete with recently acquired Eric Murray to fill a need at safety after trading Jabrill Peppers to the Giants in the Odell Beckham Jr. deal.

Burnett became a free agent when the Pittsburgh Steelers released him Monday.  The Steelers signed Burnett a year ago to a three-year, $14.25 million contract that included a $4.25 million signing bonus.

Burnett previously played eight seasons with the Packers.  He started all 102 games he played in for Green Bay, collecting nine interceptions, 44 passes defensed, 7.5 sacks and 717 tackles.

Burnett signs free agent deal with the Steelers

Josh Jones & Morgan Burnett during 2017 Training Camp

Once the Green Bay Packers saw the asking price for veteran safety Morgan Burnett, they dropped out of the running.

During discussions between the two camps at the NFL Scouting Combine, the Packers found out that Burnett was looking for more than $8.5 million a year.  He settled for a three-year deal with the Pittsburgh Steelers for a reported $14.5 million.

Burnett was considered a top safety on the market, but the market wasn’t a good one for that position.  Instead of resigning Burnett, the Packers will go with younger players, like last years second round draft pick Josh Jones, as well as Kentrell Brice and Marwin Evans.

Burnett missed four games last season with hamstring and groin injuries.  He hasn’t played a full season since 2012.

Packers fall short in Pittsburgh, can they still make the playoffs?

November 27, 2017 By Bill Scott

For the first time in weeks, the Green Bay Packers looked like a team capable of sustaining a late season push towards a possible playoff spot.  Their effort fell just short at Pittsburgh on Sunday night, as a last second 53-yard field goal turned into a 31-28 Packers defeat.

The loss didn’t eliminate the Packers (5-6) from the playoff hunt, but their position isn’t one that teams are clamoring to be in either.  The NFC North division race, although mathematically still possible, but those odds are slim.  They trail the Minnesota Vikings (9-2) by four games with five left to play.

In the wildcard race, the Packers odds are a little better, but still not anything to write home about at this time.  The Packers two games behind a pair of teams for the sixth and final playoff spot.  It likely puts them in a position where they will need to win all five remaining games and then still get some help along the way.

Brett Hundley, in his best performance yet, completed 17 of 26 for 245 yards and three touchdowns.  Even more important is Hundley didn’t turn the ball over.  And it wasn’t because he was too conservative.  [Read more…]

House returning to Green Bay, Elliott signs one year deal

March 14, 2017 By Bill Scott

Davon House

Green Bay Packers defensive back Davon House is returning to Green Bay and will sign a one-year contract with the team.

House played his first four NFL seasons with the Packers, then left in free agency in 2015, signing a four-year, $24.5 million deal with the Jacksonville Jaguars.  The Jaguars turned around and released House after last season, saving $6 million in salary cap space.

The Packers, whose pass defense ranked 31st in the NFL last season, showed immediate interest.

The Packers released their top cover corner, Sam Shields after he suffered a concussion last season.

House started all 16 games in 2015 for the Jaguars, leading the team with four interceptions and setting a [Read more…]
