Green Bay and PMI announce Resch Center extension

September 26, 2013 By Bill Scott

The Green Bay Men’s basketball team will continue to call the Resch Center home

Resch Center

Resch Center

through at least the 2017-18 season.  The University and PMI Entertainment Group announced the deal at a joint press conference this morning.

The five-year agreement continues a partnership dating back to 2002-03, when the Phoenix  began playing its home games at the state-of-the-art facility which opened prior to that season.  The extension gives Green Bay men’s basketball priority status for scheduling events and also includes increased marketing and advertising support aimed at driving ticket sales and sponsorships.  Green Bay and PMI will collaborate branding efforts to give the Phoenix an increased presence in the facility.

Since opening play in the Resch Center, Green Bay has posted a 109-37 record in the facility for a winning percentage of 74.6 percent in 11 seasons.

Green Bay played its first home game at the Resch Center on Nov. 30, 2002 against Wisconsin.  They’ll open up the 2013-14 campaign on Nov. 16, against the Badgers.

Girls high school basketball and volleyball deals extended (audio)

September 16, 2013 By Bill Scott

The Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association (WIAA) Board of Control

WIAA Ex. Director Dave Anderson makes the announcement this morning in Green Bay

WIAA Ex. Director Dave Anderson makes the announcement this morning in Green Bay

approved an extension of the agreement with the Resch Center in Green Bay to serve as the host venue of the State Girls Volleyball and Basketball Tournaments through 2020.  The decision was announced at a news conference in Green Bay today.

11 of the 13 largest attended State Girls Volleyball Tournaments have come since moving to the Resch Center when it opened in 2002.  Last year marked the first time the girls basketball State Tournament was conducted outside of Madison in its 39-year history.  The paid attendance of 39,966 was the highest for the tournament since 2008.

The reactions of participants and fans, as well as the relationships with the Resch Center staff, the Green Bay Packers organization and the support of the Green Bay community were instrumental in the evaluation and decision to extend the agreement.  Plans to install a new scoreboard and enhance the existing sound system by 2015 were also factors in the Board’s decision.

The 2013 State Girls Volleyball Tournament will be held Nov. 7-9, and the 2014 State Girls Basketball Tournament is scheduled for March 20-22, one week following the State Boys Basketball Tournament.

Who’s to blame for the State Tournament change?

February 17, 2012 By Bill Scott

When you host 91 of the last 92 state boys basketball tournaments and every

Barry Alvarez

girls event since they started playing for state titles in 1976, one can become a bit complacent.  I believe that’s one of the reason’s why Madison and the Kohl Center is losing the WIAA boys and girls basketball tournaments to Green Bay and the Resch Center.

With all of its tradition, the people in Madison, without even knowing it, were taking the WIAA, its member schools and all of their fans for granted.

Madison city officials, as well as officials at the University knew they had the state’s championship tournaments in their back yard.  They didn’t need to go out and impress anybody.  The Kohl Center, which is home to the Wisconsin Badgers, accomplished that on its own.

The University didn’t seem overly concerned about potential scheduling conflicts, nor were they alarmed with high concession prices.  If they were, they would have done something about it. [Read more…]

State Tournaments: Madison’s loss is Green Bay’s gain

February 17, 2012 By Bill Scott

The WIAA state boys and girls basketball tournaments took another step

Resch Center

towards relocating to Green Bay.  Madison has hosted the boys tournament 91 of the last 92 years, and has been the host of the girls tournament since its inception in 1976.

The WIAA Board of Control approved executive director Dave Anderson’s recommendation to accept a bid by Ashwaubenon-based PMI Entertainment to host the boys and girls tournaments at the Resch Center, possibly as early as next year.

If the University of Wisconsin can’t accommodate the basketball tournaments in accordance with the terms of the existing agreements, then the WIAA will enter into a five-year agreement to move its tournaments to the Resch Center. [Read more…]

Green Bay may have best offer on the table, but……

January 26, 2012 By Bill Scott

With the Kohl Center unable to guarantee dates for the next couple of years, it

Kohl Center

certainly looks like Green Bay has put more on the table for the WIAA to consider with regards to the future of the State basketball and wrestling tournaments.

Both cities gave their pitch to the WIAA Board of Control on Wednesday.

Based on conversations with both parties, it would appear that the Green Bay contingent has more to offer at the moment, with a guarantee that the Resch Center would be available to the WIAA on the dates needed.

Availability is an issue for the Kohl Center starting next year (2013) already.  But even more important, the long-term availability is something that can only happen if the Big Ten Conference men’s hockey schools change the format of the Big Ten Tournament. [Read more…]
