Badgers rebound, end 2-game slide (AUDIO)

February 20, 2017 By Bill Scott

Nigel Hayes and Ethan Happ combined for 41 points and 17 rebounds, helping the 10th ranked Wisconsin Badgers end a two-game losing streak with a 71-60 win over Maryland at the Kohl Center.

The Badgers trailed the 24th-ranked Terrapins by six points at halftime but dominated the second half to pull out the win.

Both teams dealt with foul trouble throughout and the Badgers dealt with poor shooting in the first half before turning things around.

Wisconsin failed to shoot 40% or better in five of their last six games and started Sunday’s game by hitting just 28% from the floor (7 of 25) in the opening half.  But this time the Badgers rebounded, shooting 51.5% (17 of 33) in the second half. [Read more…]

Badgers see 9-game win streak end in West Lafayette

January 9, 2017 By Bill Scott

Number-11 Wisconsin were the last remaining unbeaten team in the Big Ten.  That ended on Sunday in West Lafayette, Indiana with a 66-55 loss to the Purdue Boilermakers at Mackey Arena.

The Badgers nine-game win streak ended when they shot just 34% from the floor in the first half and only 39% for the game.  They hit just 2 of 14 from beyond the arc (14%).  But the Badgers struggled to finish even around the rim, making just two of 14 from inside of two feet in the first half.

Ethan Happ hit just one of his first six shots from the field, banging with Purdue’s 7’2 big man Isaac Haas and 6’9 forward Caleb Swanigan.  Happ, to his credit, did figure things out in the second half and finished with 17 points for the game.

Nigel Hayes had 10 points and Bronson Koenig (14.1 avg) was held to nine points on just eight attempts for the game.

Purdue hit 46% of their three-point attempts (7 of 15) and shot 52% from the field overall.  Swanigan had 18 points and 13 rebounds for his eighth straight double-double.

The Badgers fell to 2-1 (13-3 overall) in the Big Ten, a half game behind Purdue, Minnesota, Nebraska and Michigan State.  Wisconsin returns home to host Ohio State on Thursday night at the Kohl Center.

Badgers fall in Big Ten opener

December 30, 2015 By Bill Scott

Motion WThe Wisconsin Badgers gave 14th ranked Purdue a good battle but in the end, it was the Boilermakers who prevailed, winning the Big Ten opener 61-55 over the Badgers at the Kohl Center on Tuesday night.

The game was tied at 24 at halftime and a 7-point run put the Boilermakers in front for good with about 13-minutes left.

The Badgers had little answer for Purdue’s 7-footer A-J Hammons, who scored 24 points to lead all scorers, helping the Boilermakers improve to 13-1 on the season and end a 4-game slide against Wisconsin.

The Badgers got 17 points from Nigel Hayes and freshman Alex Illikainen added 10 points but Bucky fell to 8-6.

Wisconsin returns to the Kohl Center on Saturday, playing host to Rutgers.

Ball fuels Wisconsin Badger win over Purdue

October 13, 2012 By admin

Montee Ball scored three rushing touchdowns, including a 67 yard touchdown, to help lift the Wisconsin Badgers (5-2) over the Purdue Boilermakers (3-3) 38-14.

This win moves the Badgers back above the .500 mark in Big Ten play at 2-1, while the Boilermakers fall to 0-2 in conference play.  It also puts the Badgers in the driver’s seat in the Big Ten Leaders Division to get to the Big Ten title game.  Wisconsin has a 2-game lead on Purdue and both Ohio State and Penn State are ineligible to play in the title game.

Badger quarterback Joel Stave completed 12 of his 21 passes, with a touchdown and an interception but the hero on this day was Montee Ball.

Ball rushed for 247 yards on 29 carries with three touchdowns.  It’s the 4th 100 yard game of the season for Ball and the 20th of his career at Wisconsin.  Ball also scored his 72nd touchdown, which sets the all-time Wisconsin and Big Ten record for career rushing touchdowns.  Ball passed Ron Dayne (71 td’s) to take over the top spot.

The Badgers as a team rushed for more than 400 yards in a game for the 16th time in school history.  The 467 yards rushing is the 5th best in school history.

The Badger offense rolled up 645 total yards, which is the second highest total in school history.  The top single game total is 705 yards against Indiana on Oct. 16, 1999.

Head coach Bret Bielema also earned his 65th career victory at Wisconsin, tying him with Phil King for second place on the all-time victory list at Wisconsin.  Barry Alvarez has 118 career victories.

The  Badgers next face the rival Minnesota Golden Gophers with Paul Bunyan’s Axe on the line, this coming Saturday at Camp Randall.
