Packers place Davis on IR

September 11, 2018 By Bill Scott

Trevor Davis

The Green Bay Packers placed third-year wide receiver Trevor Davis on injured reserve on Tuesday.  They claimed CB Deante Burton off of waivers from Atlanta to fill the roster spot.

Davis was a late addition to the Packers injury report this past weekend when he showed up to Lambeau Field with his hamstring acting up.  Packers coach Mike McCarthy on Monday said the team took him out on the field for an early workout and “he wasn’t ready to go”.

Davis missed most of the preseason with hamstring issues but returned for the final preseason game in Kansas City.

Burton was an undrafted free agent out of Kansas State who spent all of the 2017 season on the practice squad.  He played mostly on special teams for the Falcons last Thursday night before being released.

The Packers also released safety Marwin Evans from their practice squad and released corner Quinten Rollins and running back Devante Mays on Monday with injury settlements.

The Packers filled the open spot on their practice squad by signing CB Will Redmond.

Ryan out for the season

August 2, 2018 By Bill Scott

Jake Ryan

Green Bay Packers linebacker Jake Ryan suffered a torn ACL in his right knee in practice on Monday and will miss the rest of the season.

Ryan, who is in the final year of his contract in Green Bay, also tore his right ACL when he was in college at the University of Michigan.  He will earn his base salary of $1.907 million for this season.

Ryan was set to start in the Packers base defense, now Packers defensive coordinator Mike Pettine will have to find an alternative.  Pettine has used a number of players during practice this week, including Quentin Rollins, Josh Jones and Jermaine Whitehead and rookie Oren Burks in the dime package.

On Tuesday, general manager Brian Gutekunst said he had no plans to replace Ryan with a veteran.  He wanted to see how Burks and the other young players do in Camp.  Ahmad Thomas, Greer Martini and Naashon Hughes have all shown flashes in the first week.

Defensive coordinator Mike Pettine was asked on Wednesday how me might replace Ryan.  Pettine said, “Well, certainly we have experience in a guy that was very productive last year in Blake.  We have the rookie, O.B. (Burks), who has looked good at times.  Still, the transition from the college game to the NFL, it takes some time.

“It’s tough for those guys to come in, and it overwhelms them a little bit at first.  And especially now, we’re working off the entire inventory.  And once we get to game plan situations, we really cut it down.  That’s going to help a lot of our guys that have a lot of stuff running through their head.

“Ahmad Thomas has flashed, certainly, some coverage ability in the days so far.  And then we have some other, younger guys.  We’ll see how it plays out.  It’s a big loss.”

Packers offense is a mess in 30-16 loss to Dallas

A week ago, Mike McCarthy’s Green Bay Packers were 3-1 and he felt he didn’t need to explain what was up with the offense after putting up 400 yards in a win over the Giants.  Many of his players followed suit, either not believing they had issues, or weren’t willing to discuss it with reporters.

After Sunday’s 30-16 loss to the Dallas Cowboys, coach and players weren’t nearly as combative.  They admitted they have issues but didn’t offer any thoughts on how to fix the problems.

The Packers turned the ball over four times in the loss.  Aaron Rodgers threw his third interception in the last two weeks.  He also fumbled twice, losing one after trying to run a quarterback keeper on first and goal at the four yard line, ending a golden opportunity for the Packers to try to score a touchdown. The Green Bay Packers went head-to-head with one of the top defensive fronts in the NFL and won, pulling out a 24-10 victory over the St. Louis Rams at Lambeau Field.

The Packers defense gave up 159 rushing yards to Todd Gurley, but they held Nick Foles to just 141 yards passing, completing just 11 of 30 passes.  Foles was held to one touchdown and the Packers secondary picked him off four times.

Two of those interceptions came from rookie Quinten Rollins, the first of which was returned 45 yards for a touchdown, giving the Packers a 14-0 lead.

The defense continues to stand out, sacking Foles three times, but getting 12 more hits on the [Read more…]
