Aaron Rodgers was knocked out of Sunday’s game with another calf injury, going down while throwing the first of two touchdown passes to Randall Cobb in the second quarter.

The Green Bay Packers quarterback would get treatment at halftime and return in the 3rd quarter to throw another scoring strike to Cobb and lead the Packers to a 30-20 win over the Detroit Lions, securing their 4th straight NFC North Division title and a first round bye in the NFC playoffs.

Rodgers second quarter touchdown pass extended the Packers lead to 14-0.  By the time he returned, the Lions had tied the game on a pair of Matthew Stafford to Calvin Johnson scoring strikes.

Rodgers said after the game that he was hoping to give his team a jolt by returning.  He got some help from the 78,408 fans on hand, who chanted “MVP, MVP, MVP” upon his return. [Read more…]

The Green Bay Packers are expected to be without tight end Brandon Bostick in their Sept. 4 season opener at Seattle.

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel cited sources as saying Bostick suffered a slight fracture of the fibula in his right leg during last Saturday’s game at St. Louis.

Bostick was in the locker room walking on crutches this week, after Mike McCarthy said the tight end would miss a couple of weeks with a lower leg injury.

The Packers are hoping to have Bostick back by week 2 or 3.

Without Bostick, the Packers figure to give most of the playing time to rookie Richard Rodgers and Andrew Quarless.  It also means the Packers may have to keep one or two additional tight ends.  Veterans Ryan Taylor and Jake Stoneburner are next in line.  Stoneburner has received plenty of work during training camp workouts, many times ahead of Quarless in the rotation.

Taylor and Stoneburner are being challenged by rookie Justin Perillo, a free agent from Maine.  If Perillo doesn’t make the roster, there’s a good chance he would be called back to the Packers practice squad.

Packers giving TE Lyerla a second chance

May 20, 2014 By Bill Scott

The Green Bay Packers signed talented but troubled rookie tight end Colt Lyerla on Monday, willing to give the former Oregon star a second

chance.

Lyerla was arrested for cocaine possession last fall and quit the University of Oregon football team.  He was suspended for a game in 2013 before eventually quitting.  Lyerla had his driver’s license suspended five days later and was then arrested for allegedly snorting cocaine in his car on Oct. 23rd.  After pleading guilty to possession of cocaine, he was sentenced to 24 months of probation, 10 days in jail and 40 hours of community service.  There was also a twitter post referencing the Sandy Hook Elementary mass shooting as a conspiracy.

Lyerla had an outstanding combine in Indianapolis, yet still went undrafted.  He had the third-best 40-yard dash (4.61 seconds), the best vertical jump (39 inches) and tied for the best broad jump (10-8).  His talent could have led to a first or second round selection in the draft, but no team was willing to take a gamble on a player with such major character concerns.

That didn’t mean teams weren’t interested after the draft.  The Packers were one of the teams and Lyerla decided Green Bay was the right fit for him. [Read more…]

After using the 1st round pick on safety Ha Ha Clinton-Dix on day 1, General Manager Ted Thompson followed up by going with offense in two of the three selections on day 2.

First up, wide receiver Davante Adams with the 53rd overall selection in round 2.  Adams became the ninth wide receiver selected in the 2014 draft.  Adams played just two seasons at Fresno State and wound up catching 233 passes for 3,030 yards and 38 touchdowns.  This past season alone, Adams caught 131 passes for 1.718 yards and 24 touchdowns in 13 games played.

At the combine, Adams ran a 4.59 40-yard dash, but both he and his position coach Edgar Bennett both said speed isn’t the only factor in determining the quality of receiver he is. [Read more…]
