Jeter joins Gophers coaching staff

April 11, 2018 By Bill Scott

Rob Jeter

Former Wisconsin assistant and Milwaukee Panther head coach Rob Jeter is joining the Minnesota Gophers coaching staff.

Gophers coach Richard Pitino announced Tuesday that Jeter will replace Kimani Young, who left for Connecticut to be an assistant coach there.

Jeter spent the last two seasons in Las Vegas as an assistant at UNLV.  He coached the Milwaukee Panthers for 11 seasons.  Jeter was also an assistant to Bo Ryan for four years at Wisconsin.  He played for Ryan at UW-Platteville.

The Gophers are coming off a 15-17 season and return just five scholarship players who saw action this past season.

Johnson joins Jeter in Vegas

May 19, 2016 By Bill Scott

Milwaukee Panthers logoUW-Milwaukee point guard Jordan Johnson is following his coach Rob Jeter to UNLV.  Both Johnson and the Runnin’ Rebels tweeted the news on Wednesday, almost two weeks after Jeter was hired as an assistant to new Las Vegas coach Marvin Menzies.

Johnson averaged 12 points and eight assists for the Panthers last season, and he’ll have to sit out one year under NCAA transfer rules before he plays his senior year in the fall of 2017.

Johnson is the third player to leave Milwaukee after being upset about the way Jeter was let go.  Cody Wichmann decided to stay after he also received permission to transfer.

Report: UW-Milwaukee reaches deal with Michigan assistant

April 7, 2016 By Bill Scott

Milwaukee Panthers logoAccording to multiple reports, UW-Milwaukee has reached an agreement with Michigan assistant coach LaVall Jordan to become the school’s next head men’s basketball coach.  Jordan has spent the last six seasons on Michigan’s bench and three years before that at Iowa.

Jordan replaces Rob Jeter, who was fired in March after eleven years at the helm of the Panther basketball program.

That firing has led to much criticism of Panther athletic director Amanda Braun after she denied the Panthers an opportunity to participate in several second-tier postseason tournaments despite a 20-win season and an offer from a booster to pick up all of the costs.  Braun then fired Jeter and fans and Panther players made their disappointment known.

Four of those players, Austin Arians, Cody Wichmann, Akeem Springs and Jordan Johnson have been granted their releases and are considering transferring.  However, a condition of their release is they must meet with Jordan before leaving.

Badgers lose assistant coach after 13 years

Gary Close

After finishing the season in the “Sweet 16”, Wisconsin basketball coach Greg Gard will be looking to hire a new assistant coach.  Gary Close resigned his position after 13 years in Madison.

Close said he wanted to spend more time with his two kids, a 15-year-old son (Sam) and a 10-year-old daughter (Ellen).

Close told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel that he doesn’t have any real concrete plans but felt the timing was pretty good.

Close was an assistant at Stanford and Iowa, then a head coach at Regina High School in Iowa before joining the UW staff in the spring of 2003.

The move could open the door for former Badger assistant Rob Jeter to return to the Badgers if Gard decides to go in that direction.  Jeter was an assistant at Wisconsin from 2001-’05 before taking over the UW-Milwaukee program.  He was fired after 11 seasons with the Panthers just a couple of weeks ago.

Milwaukee fires head coach Rob Jeter

After 11 seasons as head coach of the UW-Milwaukee Panthers, Rob Jeter has been fired.  Athletic Director Amanda Braun made the announcement Thursday morning.

Jeter, who had one year left on his contract, compiled a 185-170 overall record.  The 185 wins is one shy of tying Guy Penwell for the all-time lead in school history.

Jeter led the Panthers to the NCAA Tournament twice, the most recent in 2013-’14.  The Panthers were banned from any postseason play in 2014-’15 for failing to meet Academic Progress Rate requirements in a four-year window spanning from 2009-’10 through 2012-’13.

The team compiled a program-best 3.104 grade-point average during the fall 2015 term. [Read more…]

The UW-Milwaukee men’s basketball team can’t play in the upcoming Horizon League tournament, but the Panthers are closing out their season with a purpose.

J.J. Panoske scored a career best 19-points to lead the UWM-Panthers to a 66-60 win over Cleveland State on Sunday on Senior Day at UW-Milwaukee Panther Arena.

The Panthers (12-16, 7-7 HL) have two games left in their season, both of them on the road.  They have won six of their last seven home games to finish 9-4 at Panther Arena this season.

Two seniors will be leaving the program at the end of the season.  Steve McWhorter had 13 points and nine assists.  Evan Richard didn’t score yesterday.

Cleveland State (11-4, 17-11) had just beaten Green Bay on Friday night and could have moved within a half game behind first-place Valparaiso.  Instead, the Vikings fell to Rob Jeter’s Panthers, a team that gets no conference tournament or post season, so this is their post season.

Milwaukee Panthers won’t have that chance next year.

The University has been informed by the NCAA’s Committee on Academic Performance that it was denied its final appeal of a postseason ban for 2014-15 because of cumulative Academic Performance Rate (APR) scores.

That means the Panthers won’t be allowed to compete in both the Horizon League Tournament or the NCAA Tournament.  UWM won the Horizon League tournament last season, earning a spot in the 68-team NCAA Field.  They lost a second round game to Villanova. [Read more…]
