Braun could play beyond this season (AUDIO)

When the Milwaukee Brewers started spring training back in February, veteran Ryan Braun was preparing for what appeared to be his final season.  But that was then.  Braun told reporters on Saturday that several factors have him considering at least one more season in 2021.

“To start with, we’ll only play 60 games instead of 162 games, so obviously at this age and where I’m at in my career, it’s very appealing to me to have the option to DH for a decent percentage of my at-bats,” Braun said.  “And this season will be an experience like we’ve never experienced before.

“So at this point, I feel like it’s more likely that I play another year than I anticipated a few months back.”

Braun is entering the final year of the five-year, $105 million extension he signed with the Brewers back in 2011.  The deal includes a $15 million mutual option for 2021 with a $4 million buyout. [Read more…]

Brewers clinch second straight post season playoff berth (AUDIO)

September 26, 2019 By Bill Scott

It’ll go down as a September to remember.  The Milwaukee Brewers clinched at least a wildcard playoff spot for the second straight year, capping things off with a 9-2 win over the Cincinnati Reds at Great American Ballpark on Wednesday night.

It’s the 6th straight win, the 17th in the last 19 games and a 19-4 month of September for the Brewers, who came from five-games behind the Chicago Cubs in the National League wildcard race.  They also did it after losing Christian Yelich to a season ending knee injury, improving to 12-2 since losing their MVP.

The division leading Cardinals lost again on Wednesday as the Brewers climbed to within a game and a half of St. Louis.  If the Brewers can win today, they’ll move to within a game of the Cardinals, who have the day off.  The Brewers also trail the Nationals by one-game in the chase for the top wildcard spot. Brewers win 5th straight, reduce magic number to 1

The Milwaukee Brewers stayed hot, winning their fifth straight game, 4-2 over the Cincinnati Reds at Great American Ballpark on Tuesday night.  It’s the 16th win in the last 18 games and moved the Brewers to 18-4 in the month of September.

With the Chicago Cubs falling to the Pittsburgh Pirates 9-2, the Brewers magic number to clinch a wildcard playoff spot is now down to one.

Sonny Gray entered the game for Cincinnati with a 2-0 record and 1.85 ERA in four starts against the Brewers this season.  But the Brewers got three early runs off of him and let their bullpen do the rest.

Cincinnati scored first, on back-to-back doubles from Joey Votto and Aristedes Aquino in the bottom of the first inning.  The Reds increased their lead to 2-0 after Ryan Braun’s attempt at a diving catch failed. [Read more…]

The Milwaukee Brewers were down to their last strike in the 9th inning on Sunday afternoon before Ryan Braun drove a 3-2 pitch into the left-center field stands for a 7-4 lead and eventual 7-6 victory.

Braun’s blast allowed the Brewers to stay within one-game of the Chicago Cubs for the second National League wild card spot.  They’re 2 1/2 games behind Washington for the top wild card position and just three games behind the Cardinals for the Central Division lead.

The Cubs, who swept the Pirates over the weekend, are just two games behind the Cardinals with the two teams playing each other seven times in the final two weeks of the season.

St. Louis reliever John Gant walked the bases loaded with one out in the top of the ninth and the Cardinals leading 4-3.  Reliever Tyler Webb came on to get Mike Moustakas with a shallow fly ball to center field. [Read more…]

Gio Gonzalez started and worked four innings and the Brewers bullpen didn’t allow a single base runner over the final five innings, striking out ten of the 18 batters they faced.

Freddy Peralta picked up the win and Josh Hader posted his 31st save.

Brewers fall to Diamondbacks in series finale

August 26, 2019 By Bill Scott

Christian Walker clubbed a two-run homer in the first inning off of Zach Davies to lead the Arizona Diamondbacks to a 5-2 win over the Milwaukee Brewers at Miller Park on Sunday.

Eduardo Escobar added a solo shot for Arizona, which avoided a three-game sweep.  It also put an end to the Brewers three-game winning streak.

Robbie Ray fired five shutout innings to earn the win in his return game from the injured list, improving to 11-7 for the Diamondbacks.  Archie Bradley got the final four outs for his seventh save.

Manny Pina  homered in the seventh and Ryan Braun knocked in the other run in the eighth on a sac-fly for the Brewers.  Zach Davies allowed four runs in four innings to take the loss, falling to 8-7 on the season. [Read more…]

Brewers stumble late, drop second straight to Cardinals

Junior Guerra – File Photo by Bill Greenblatt/UPI

The Milwaukee Brewers took a 2-1 lead in the sixth inning over St. Louis on Tuesday night, then the roof caved in, leading to a 9-4 loss to the Cardinals.

The Cardinals tallied four runs in both the sixth and seventh innings to take control of the game.

The meltdown started in the bottom of the sixth when Jeremy Jeffress (3-4) loaded the bases and didn’t retire a batter.  After Alex Claudio came on to strike out Kolten Wong and Craig Counsell turned next to Junior Guerra.

Guerra quickly walked Harrison Bader to force in the tying run before striking out pinch-hitter Matt Carpenter for the second out.  The big blow came next, when Dexter Fowler lifted a broken-bat pop fly [Read more…]

Brewers struggling to score runs, fall again to Cubs

August 4, 2019 By Bill Scott

There’s been considerable talk about the Milwaukee Brewers starting pitching rotation, but the teams offense has been the biggest disappointment of late.

The Brewers fell to 1-4 on their 9-game road trip after falling to the Chicago Cubs 4-1 at Wrigley Field on Saturday afternoon.  In the teams four losses on the road trip, the Brewers have scored a total of eight runs.

In three straight losses, the Brewers have gone 3-for-21 (.143) with runners in scoring position.  During the last six games (one win), the Brewers have played a total of 16 runs, a little more than 2 1/2 runs a game on average.

Ryan Braun knocked in the lone Brewers run on Saturday, a run scoring single in the sixth off of Cubs reliever David Phelps.

Gio Gonzalez was pulled before reaching five full innings, but he had pitched well to that point, allowing only a single run.

Cubs lefty Cole Hamels was solid in his return from the injured list, pitching five shutout innings before giving way to the bullpen.

Albert Almora, Jr., snapped a 1-1 tie in the seventh with a home run against Junior Guerra.  The Cubs scored two more runs in the eighth off of Freddy Peralta for the 4-1 win.

The Brewers will try to avoid the sweep on Sunday afternoon, sending Adrian Hauser to the mound against Chicago’s Yu Darvish.
