Brewers win, Liriano hospitalized

March 21, 2016 By Bill Scott

Brewers logoMilwaukee Brewers outfielder Rymer Liriano is hospitalized after being hit in the face with a pitch during a 3-1 exhibition win over the Los Angeles Dodgers in Phoenix.

It happened in the eighth inning on Sunday, when Dodgers right-hander matt West threw a high-and-tight pitch that struck the 24-year-old Liriano near his left eye.  Liriano was carted off the field and taken to a hospital where he’ll undergo further test.  He’ll start the season on the disabled list.

Liriano was acquired in a trade with the San Diego Padres in January, and he’s out of minor league options, which put pressure on him to compete for an outfield spot with the Brewers.

Jimmy Nelson gave up one run on four hits in six innings against a Dodgers split squad, as Milwaukee improved to 9-8-1 in the Cactus League.  They’ll face the Angels today.

There’s just 14-days between now and opening day at Miller Park.

Peterson clears waivers, sent to minors

February 4, 2016 By Bill Scott

Brewers logoOutfielder Shane Peterson had been designated for assignment last week when the Milwaukee Brewers acquired outfielder Rymer Liriano from San Diego.  Peterson cleared waivers on Thursday and was sent outright to Class AAA Colorado Springs.

Peterson received an invitation to Brewers’ spring training camp as a non-roster player.

The 27-year-old Peterson hit .294 as a pinch-hitter for the Brewers last season and played in 91 games in all.  For the season, he hit .259 with two homers and 16 RBI.

The Brewers needed to open a 40-man roster spot to acquire Liriano and did so by designating Peterson.  Now he is one of 17 non-roster players invited to spring training.

Brewers acquire outfielder from Padres

January 29, 2016 By Bill Scott

Brewers logoThe Milwaukee Brewers acquired outfielder Rymer Liriano from the San Diego Padres on Thursday, in exchange for left-handed reliever Trevor Seidenberger.

To make room for Lirano on their 40-man roster, the Brewers designated outfielder Shane Peterson for assignment.

The 24-year-old Lirano, who was once considered one of the best prospects in the Padres farm system, played last season at Class AA El Paso and hit .292 with 14 homer runs and 64 RBI in 131 games.  But he also struck out 132 times.

Brewers general manager David Stearns received input from the Brewers new bench coach Pat Murphy, who managed at El Paso last season before moving up to become San Diego’s interim manager.

Liriano is out of options, so he has to make the team to stay on the 40-man roster.

As for Shane Peterson, if he clears waivers, it’s likely the Brewers would try to keep him in the organization.
