Former Marquette players Sam and Joey Hauser haven’t made their transfer plans official yet, but the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel is citing sources that say the brothers are no longer considering a transfer to Madison to play for the Badgers.

Less than a month ago, it was reported that the Hauser’s were going to transfer to Wisconsin and play for the Badgers.  That has apparently changed.

The Journal Sentinel reported Saturday that Sam Hauser is expected to choose Virginia to play for Tony Bennett and Joey will play for Tom Izzo and the Michigan State Spartans.

Sam Hauser played three seasons at Marquette and will have one season of eligibility remaining.  Joey Hauser has two seasons of eligibility remaining, although he could decide to appeal to regain a season that he lost because of injury. [Read more…]

Wojciechowski gets extension at Marquette

May 8, 2019 By Bill Scott

Steve Wojciechowski

Marquette is locking up men’s basketball coach Steve Wojciechowski long-term.  His new deal now runs through the 2023-’24 season.

Marquette won 23 games during the regular season and finished second in the Big East, but the Golden Eagles lost six of their last seven.

After guard Markus Howard announced in early April that he was returning for his senior season, brothers Sam and Joey Hauser announced that they were leaving the program.

Despite the fact that Wojciechowski has led the Golden Eagles to three straight postseason tournaments, they’re 0-2 in NCAA Tournament games.  Marquette did win a pair of games in the 2018 National Invitation Tournament.

Marquette was in line to claim the Big East championship but dropped its final four regular-season [Read more…]

According to a CBS Sports report, Sam and Joey Hauser, who announced on April 15th that they are leaving Marquette, will visit four schools who are in the running for their services moving forward.

The brothers are planning visits to Wisconsin, Iowa, Michigan State and Virginia.

Iowa is the fourth school in the mix.  Hawkeyes coach Fran McCaffrey recruited Joey in high school.  The younger Hauser also played AAU ball with Hawkeyes sophomore Joe Wieskamp.

Both Hausers have to sit out next season, per NCAA transfer rules.  Sam would have one year of eligibility left.  Joey would have two years and possibly a third if an NCAA waiver is granted.

The race is on for college basketball’s top brother combination.  According to Marquette men’s basketball coach Steve Wojciechowski, Sam and Joey Hauser will transfer from the program and look to play elsewhere.

In three seasons with Marquette, Sam Hauser has started 97 of 101 games and averaged 12.7 points and 6.0 rebounds a game.

Joey Hauser started 31 of 34 games in his first season with the team and averaged 9.8 points and 5.3 rebounds a game.

As a junior last season, Sam Hauser was a second-team all-Big East selection and averaged 15.1 points.

The two brothers played together for two seasons at Stevens Point Area Senior High School, leading the Panthers to a pair of WIAA state titles.

Wisconsin missed on both players the first time around.  Can they find a way to land both players this time?

Golden Eagles are one and done in NCAA’s

March 22, 2019 By Bill Scott

After struggling down the stretch during the regular season, it was no surprise to see the Marquette Golden Eagles suffer a 83-64 loss to 12th-seeded Murray State in the first round of the NCAA Tournament on Thursday in Hartford, Conn.

Marquette (24-10) dropped six of its last seven games after being ranked as high as 10th in the Top 25 polls back in February.

The Racers (28-4) got 17 points, 16 assists and 11 rebounds from star guard Ja Morant to win their 12th straight win.  He’s the first player to record a triple-double in the NCAA Tournament game since Draymond Green with Michigan State in 2012.  Morant is just the 8th player to achieve the honor.

Markus Howard had 16 points in the first half and 26 for the game.  Sam Hauser added 16 points for the Golden Eagles, who managed to shoot just over 32% as a team for the game.

Marquette hasn’t won a game in the NCAA Tournament since 2013.

Racers coach Matt McMahon said they wanted to make the Golden Eagles a one-on-one team.  Their game plan worked.

Murray State will move on to the second round and face Florida State on Saturday for the right to move on to the Sweet 16.

Marquette junior guard Markus Howard was a unanimous selection for the All-Big East first team, which was announced on Sunday.

Howard led the Big East in scoring, averaging 25 points a game.  He was joined on the first team by Georgetown center Jessie Govan, St. John’s guard Shamorie Ponds, Seton Hall guard Myles Powell and Villanova teammates Eric Paschall and Phil Booth.

Booth, Paschall and Powell were also unanimous picks.

Marquette junior forward Sam Hauser was named to the all-conference second team.  He’s averaging 14.8 points and 7.1 rebounds a game.

Sam’s younger brother, Joey Hauser, was named to the conference’s all-freshman team.  He’s averaging 9.8 points and 2.5 assists a game.

Marquette opens the Big East Tournament on Thursday night against the winner of a game between St. John’s and DePaul at Madison Square Garden.

Marquette is limping to the finish

March 7, 2019 By Bill Scott

The Marquette Golden Eagles let a second half lead slip away and fell to Seton Hall 73-64 on Wednesday night at the Prudential Center.

It’s the third straight loss for the Golden Eagles (23-7, 12-5 Big East), who were outscored 18-0 in the final 4 minutes, 40 seconds by the Pirates (17-12, 8-9).

Marquette coughed up a second half lead for the third straight game and once again, turnovers were a problem.  The Golden Eagles finished with 17 giveaways after turning the ball over 40 times combined in previous losses to Villanova and Creighton.

Sam Hauser poured in 25 points for Marquette, but he was the only Golden Eagles player to finish in double figures.  The Big East’s leading scorer, Markus Howard, had just six points (2 of 11).  Freshman Joe Hauser hit just 2 of 12 from the field and finished with four points.

Marquette closes the regular season at home on Saturday against Georgetown.

Sam Hauser had 18 points and 13 rebounds and Sacar Anim added 18 points to lead 11th ranked Marquette past Providence 76-58 on Big East action in Providence, R.I., on Saturday.

The Golden Eagles (23-4, 12-2 Big East) led by 11 points at halftime and shot 53.6 percent in the second half to finish 54.9 percent for the game.

Markus Howard, who leads the Big East in scoring at 25.7 points a game, left in the first half with a groin injury.  He returned to play the entire second half and a total of 36 minutes for the game, but finished with just 14 points on 2 of 12 shooting.

Marquette got plenty of other help with freshman forward Joey Hauser scoring 15 points and junior forward Ed Morrow Jr. adding 11.

The Golden Eagles finished 10 of 21 from 3-point range while the Friars hit 6 of 20.

The win assures Marquette of a No. 1 or 2 seed in the upcoming Big East Tournament.  The Golden Eagles, who have a one game lead on defending champion Villanova in the Big East standings, will play at Villanova on Wednesday.  It’s a rematch of a game the Golden Eagles won 66-65 back on Feb. 9 in Milwaukee.

February 13, 2019 By Bill Scott

Markus Howard poured in 36 points and Sam Hauser added 17 to lead 10th ranked Marquette to a 92-73 win over the DePaul Blue Demons in Chicago.

Howard hit 12 of 21 from the field and 8 of 10 from the free throw line, scoring at least 30 points in four of his last five games.

Marquette (21-4, 10-2 Big East) won its second straight game since a 1-point loss to St. John’s.

Femi Olujobi scored 19 points for DePaul (13-10, 5-7), and Max Strus had 16.

After DePaul got to within one point late in the first half, the Golden Eagles went on a 11-0 run to pull away for good.

The Marquette Golden Eagles have only lost two Big East Conference games, with both losses coming at the hands of the St. John’s Red Storm.

The Golden Eagles (19-4, 8-2 Big East) shot just 38% from the field in the first half, including 23 percent on 3-of-13 shooting from distance in falling behind by as many as 12 points in the first half, on the way to a 70-69 loss.

St. John’s point guard Shamorie Ponds poured in 28 points, sending Marquette to its first ever defeat at Fiserv Forum.

Ponds and the Red Storm (17-6, 5-5 Big East) kept it up in the early stages of the second half, going up by as many as 15 points, 49-34 with 15:34 left to play.  But Marquette used a 9-2 run, capped by three of Sam Hauser’s team-high 19 points, and the Golden Eagles would climb to within one point, 56-55 with 5:53 remaining.
