Rodgers, Adams lead Packers rout (COVID Update)

November 6, 2020 By Bill Scott

Davante Adams

After falling twice to San Francisco last season, the Green Bay Packers rolled to a convincing 34-17 win over the shorthanded 49ers on Thursday night.

Aaron Rodgers completed 25 of 31 passes for 305 yards and four touchdowns, his fourth four-touchdown passing game this season.

Davante Adams had 10 catches for 173 yards and his league-leading eighth touchdown catch of the season and became the first player in NFL history with three games of 10 receptions for at least 150 yards in his team’s first eight games.  Adams missed two of those eight games because of injury.

Marquez Valdes-Scantling dropped his fifth pass of the season, but rebounded with a pair of touchdown receptions, including a 52-yarder.

Running back Aaron Jones returned to the lineup and started for the Packers.  Jones didn’t score, but he did rush for 58 yards on 15 carries and was a key part of the offensive game plan on the team’s opening drive.

That opening drive ended with a 36-yard touchdown pass from Aaron Rodgers to Davante Adams, giving the Packers [Read more…]

Packers matchup with 49ers could face COVID obstacle

November 4, 2020 By Bill Scott

The Green Bay Packers are getting ready to leave for California in a few hours, but whether or not that game against the 49ers on Thursday night gets played is up in the air..

The Packers lost rookie AJ Dillon to a positive COVID-19 test on Monday and running back Jamaal Williams and rookie linebacker Kamal Martin were added to the reserve/COVID-19 list after contact tracing determined they were both high risk.

The game remained a go because the Packers haven’t had any additional positive tests this week.

Now, the 49ers have closed their facilities on Wednesday as a precaution after wide receiver Kendrick Bourne tested positive for COVID on Wednesday.  Contact tracing is underway to see if the virus’s spread is contained to Bourne, or if it reaches additional players.

That may not be known until Thursday, at which time the Packers will have already arrived in California.

Packers still on for Thursday against 49ers

November 3, 2020 By Bill Scott

Matt LaFleur

As of late Monday, the Green Bay Packers game on Thursday night against the San Francisco 49ers is still on, despite Packers rookie running back AJ Dillon being ruled out of the game after a positive COVID-19 test on Monday.

Dillon is the Packers second-round draft pick.  He played 10 snaps on offense and seven more on special teams in Sunday’s 28-22 loss to the Minnesota Vikings.

At his Zoom meeting with reporters on Monday, coach Matt LaFleur said he is operating under the assumption that Thursday’s game at San Francisco will be played.

“All indications point toward us playing on Thursday night,” LaFleur said.  “I think the league has confidence that we’ve [Read more…]

Packers routed by 49ers for second time this season

January 20, 2020 By Bill Scott

Davante Adams

The Green Bay Packers knew San Francisco wanted to run the football, but they offered little in terms of stopping or even slowing the 49ers down.  The result was another lopsided contest between the two teams this season.

In November, the Packers fell behind 23-0 at halftime and went on to lose 37-8 at Levi Stadium.  On Sunday, the Packers fell behind 27-0 at halftime and lost 37-20 in the NFC Championship game.

The 49ers ran just 50 total plays from scrimmage and 42 of the 50 were running plays.  When asked why he kept calling run plays, San Francisco head coach Kyle Shanahan said because it kept working.

The Niners racked up 285 yards on the ground.  Raheem Mostert finished with 29 carries for 220 yards and four touchdowns.  They only needed quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo to hand off.  He finished 6 of 8 through the air, for 77 yards.

The Packers struggled to get their offense going in the first half, totaling 51 yards rushing and 65 passing.  It wasn’t until the second half, that Aaron Rodgers would start to move the offense.  He finished [Read more…]

Packers dig early hole, throttled by 49ers

November 25, 2019 By Bill Scott

Bryan Bulaga

Sunday nights NFC showdown in Santa Clara, California was supposed to provide a measuring stick for both the Green Bay Packers and the San Francisco 49ers.  It did just that, but it wasn’t the result the Packers or their fans had hoped for.

The 49ers put up a statement as they pummeled the Packers 37-8.  Jimmy Garoppolo passed for 253 yards and two scores as San Francisco improved to 10-1.

Meanwhile, Aaron Rodgers felt the 49ers defensive pressure and was sacked five times.  He threw for just 104 yards and a touchdown, one of the worst performances of his career.

There’s a lot to be concerned about for the Packers.  First and foremost, they were the healthy team with a bye week of rest.  The 49ers were just the opposite but you wouldn’t have known by watching Sunday night’s onslaught.  The 49ers were clearly the more physical team. [Read more…]

Packers head into bye with a victory

October 16, 2018 By Bill Scott

Davante Adams – File Photo

The Green Bay Packers trailed the San Francisco 49ers for much of the night and for the most part, were outplayed by the 49ers.  But another Aaron Rodgers led comeback gave the Packers a 33-30 win and a 3-2-1 record entering their Week 7 bye.

Rodgers hit Davante Adams with a 16-yard scoring pass with 1:55 left to play to tie the game.  It gave the 49ers plenty of time to try to move into scoring position for a potential game-winning drive.

Second year corner Kevin King stopped that 49ers drive by intercepting C.J. Beathard, giving football to the Packers at the 19-yard line with 1:07 left.  The rest is history as the Packers marched down the field and Mason Crosby booted the game-winning 27-yard field goal as time expired.

It was the perfect redemption for Crosby, who had missed four field goals and an extra point in a loss to the Lions a week earlier.  Crosby booted four field goals, including a 51-yarder to quickly rebound from his poor night one week earlier.

Defensively, the Packers allowed 24 points in the first half.  The 49ers tallied 290 yards in the first half, an average of 10 yards per play.  They did hold the 49ers to a pair of second half field goals and turned the 49ers over three times overall. [Read more…]

Hundley likely to miss preseason game at San Francisco (AUDIO)

August 20, 2016 By Bill Scott

Brett Hundley

Brett Hundley

Things certainly haven’t gone according to plan for Green Bay Packers backup quarterback Brett Hundley.

After missing two weeks of Training Camp with a bad ankle, Hundley returned last week, only to re-injure his ankle early in the second quarter of Thursday’s 20-12 exhibition win over the Oakland Raiders.

Hundley spoke with reports on Saturday and was moving around well.  But Hundley’s ankle is still sore enough that Packers coach Mike McCarthy said the second year quarterback would be hard-pressed to play at all in the third preseason game against San Francisco. [Read more…]

Borland says he’s retiring

March 17, 2015 By Bill Scott

Chris Borland

Chris Borland

After just one season in the NFL, former Wisconsin Badger Chris Borland says he is retiring due to concerns over longterm damage from repetitive head injuries.

ESPN’s “Outside the Lines” reported Borland’s decision on Monday evening, saying the 24-year-0ld told the San Francisco 49ers of his decision last Friday.

Borland said, “I just honestly want to do what’s best for my health.  From what I’ve researched and what I’ve experienced, I don’t think it’s worth the risk.” [Read more…]

Borland likely done for the season

December 17, 2014 By Bill Scott

Chris Borland

Chris Borland

Former Wisconsin Badger linebacker Chris Borland’s rookie season at San Francisco is likely over.

Borland suffered an ankle injury recently and with the 49ers being out of playoff contention, it’s likely that they won’t push Borland to return.

Borland was the NFC’s rookie of the month in November.  He was injured on the final play of the first half against Seattle last Sunday and was scheduled to undergo an MRI.

Filling in for the injured Patrick Willis, Borland led the 49ers in tackles with 107.  That number ranked 12th in the NFL this season.

September 5, 2013 By Bill Scott

San Francisco 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh grew up hearing about the Packers, to the point where they were made to be the team to beat.

AUDIO: Jim Harbaugh heard all about the Packers as a young player :35

Now Harbaugh and his 49ers will line up against the Packers again, in the season opener on Sunday.
