Badger hockey roundup!

The Wisconsin men’s hockey team was shutout on its home ice on Friday night, falling 2-0 to the Ohio State Buckeyes in Big Ten play.

The Badgers looked a bit rusty after a three week layoff.  Neither team scored in the first two periods before the Buckeyes finally broke through at 8:53 of the third period when David Gust beat Wisconsin freshman goaltender Matt Jurusik on the glove side.

The Buckeyes added the insurance goal with a three-on-one break with almost four minutes left with Tyler Lundey finding the back of the net. [Read more…]

Top-ranked Badger women sweep Gophers

The number-one ranked Wisconsin women’s hockey team will stay that way for another week after sweeping third ranked Minnesota.

The Badgers completed the two-game sweep with a 3-1 win over the Gophers on Saturday afternoon, the first time the Gophers have been swept in a series in five years.

The Badgers (18-0) got strong play in goal from Ann-Renee Desbiens, who stopped 23 shots.

Sophomore Annie Pankowski scored twice for the Badgers and Sarah Nurse added an empty net goal in the closing seconds.

Minnesota came in as the defending national champions and the top scoring team in the country.

Wisconsin hits the road Friday to play a weekend series against North Dakota in Grand Forks.

Top ranked Badger women win 14th straight

The number-one ranked Wisconsin Badger women’s hockey team blanked Lindenwood 4-0 on Sunday at LaBahn Arena, pulling out a two-game sweep in the series.

The Badgers extended their win streak to start the season to 14-straight games.  The Badgers 14-0-0 start marks the third time UW has been unbeaten through its first 14 games, and the first time Wisconsin has won its first 14 contests.  The 14-game winning streak is tied for the third-longest in program history and is tied for the sixth-longest in WCHA history. Badger women’s hockey team headed for the NCAA Tournament

The 3rd-ranked Wisconsin Badger (28-6-4) women’s hockey team got 2 goals and one assist from sophomore Sarah Nurse in Sunday’s 4-0 win over No. 10 Bemidji State, 4-0, in the WCHA Final Face-Off championship game, capturing the program’s fifth WCHA playoff title.

Nurse captured the tournament’s Most Outstanding Player award, scoring four goals and two assists in the two game weekend.  Nurse, along with fellow sophomores Sydney McKibbon, Mellissa Channell and goaltender Ann-Renee Desbiens, were also named to the WCHA Final Face-Off All-Tournament team.

After being outshot for just the third time all season in Saturday’s win over North Dakota, UW outshot Bemidji State 37-15. [Read more…]
