Nelson’s struggles continue for the Brewers

September 10, 2016 By Bill Scott

Brewers logoMilwaukee pitcher Jimmy Nelson’s struggles continued in St. Louis on Friday night as the Cardinals ended the Brewers 3-game winning streak with a 4-3 victory.

St. Louis scored all four of their runs on a pair of home runs off Nelson in the third inning, all with two outs.

Cardinals pitcher Carlos Martinez singled and Matt Carpenter clubbed a two-run home run, to cut the Brewers lead to a single run at 3-2.  The Cardinals would get another base runner and this time it was Stephen Piscotty who launched a home run off of Nelson to give the Cardinals a 4-3 lead.

Nelson dropped to 2-11 with a 5.64 ERA over his last 19 starts.  He’s 7-14 overall on the season with a 4.42 ERA.

Scooter Gennett clubbed a two run homer in the top of the third to give the Brewers a 3-0 lead before the Cardinals rebounded in the bottom half.

Chase Anderson (8-11) pitches the third game of the series for the Brewers on Saturday night.  Adam Wainwright (10-8) goes for the Cardinals.

Guerra, bullpen combined to blank Pirates

September 2, 2016 By Bill Scott

Brewers logoReturning from a stint on the disabled list, Junior Guerra combined with six relievers to lead the Milwaukee Brewers to a 1-0 shutout win over the Pittsburgh Pirates at P-N-C Park in Pittsburgh on Friday night.

Scooter Gennett’s double to center off of Pirates starter Jameson Taillon in the sixth inning accounted for the only run of the game.  Martin Maldonado was hit by a pitch leading off the sixth, took second on a hit and run ground ball, tagged and went to third on a flyout and the scored on Gennett’s hit.

Guerra pitched 3 1/3 shutout innings after sitting out a month with right-elbow inflammation.  His pitch count climbed to 70 when he was removed, allowing five hits and two walks while striking out three. [Read more…]

Brewers offense awakens in win over Braves (AUDIO)

August 12, 2016 By Bill Scott

Brewers logoThe Milwaukee Brewers have struggled to score runs over the last few games.  They took out their frustrations on Thursday and put a  thumping on the Atlanta Braves 11-3 at Miller Park.

Chris Carter, Hernan Perez and Scooter Gennett all homered for the Brewers as they scored at least one run in every inning.  It’s the first time in the Brewers 47-year franchise history that they have scored in every inning in which they  batted in a nine-inning game.  The Brewers are only the eighth major-league team in the expansion era (since 1961) to accomplish the feat.

Veteran pitcher Matt Garza benefited from the Brewers offense, who pitched six innings and improved to 4-4.  The Brewers have scored 26 runs in Garza’s last two outings, 22 of which when he was still in the game.

The Brewers will send Jimmy Nelson to the mound tonight when they open a 3-game series against the Cincinnati Reds at Miller Park.  Nelson has allowed 25 runs (16 earned) over his last four outings.  He brings a 6-11 record and a 4.02 ERA into tonight’s game.

Homer Bailey pitches for Cincinnati, just his third start since returning from Tommy John surgery.

Brewers drop series finale in San Diego

August 4, 2016 By Bill Scott

Brewers logoVeteran Edwin Jackson tossed seven scoreless innings and chipped in with an RBI double to lead the San Diego Padres  to a 12-3 win over the Milwaukee Brewers at Petco Park on Wednesday.

Jackson (2-2) improved the first 11 batters he faced and the Brewers didn’t score until the 8th inning on Scooter Gennett’s RBI single and Ryan Braun’s two-run homer.

Jackson, who signed a minor-league contract with the Padres in June, ended up allowing three runs on eight hits with five strikeouts in eight innings.

Junior Guerra (7-3) took the loss, suffering through a rare rough outing.  Guerra allowed four runs in the first two innings in what turned out to be his shortest stint (4 innings) of the season.  Guerra had won four of his last five outings and went 2-1 with a 1.59 ERA in five July starts.

The Brewers dropped two of three in the series.  They’ll take the day off today and open a three-game series in Phoenix, against the Arizona Diamondbacks on Friday night.

Junior Guerra pitched another gem for the Milwaukee Brewers, leading the crew to a 3-1 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates in their series opener at Miller Park.

Guerra pitched 8 2/3 innings, allowing a run on four-hits to improve to 7-2 with a stingy 2.70 ERA.

Guerra was staked to an early 2-0 lead when Chris Carter clubbed a two-run homer in the first.  The Brewers other run came in the sixth on back-to-back doubles from Scooter Gennett and Keon Broxton.  Gennett extended his hitting streak to nine games.

Guerra allowed the first to Pirate hitters to reach base in the ninth with a single and a walk.  But Craig Counsell took a trip to the mound only to encourage Guerra, who was allowed to stay in the game to try to complete the shutout.

Guerra got two outs but wound up giving up a single run.  Jeremy Jeffress would come on to get the last out and did so on one pitch for his 25th save of the season.

The Brewers have won four of their last five games and will host game two against the Pirates today.

Five-run eighth lifts Brewers to victory (AUDIO)

July 27, 2016 By Bill Scott

Brewers logoThe Milwaukee Brewers broke a 4-4 tie with a five-run eighth inning, on the way to a 9-4 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks at Miller Park.

Scooter Gennett delivered the big blow with a two-run jam single to center to give the Brewers a 6-4 lead, spearheading the five-run rally.

The Brewers ended up sending ten hitters to the plate in the 8th inning.  Kirk Nieuwenhuis drew a based loaded walk to plate the third run in the inning before Jonathan Villar’s two-run single capped the rally.

After a shaky start, Matt Garza settled down and wound up pitching six innings, allowing three runs on five hits with two walks and two strikeouts.

The victory goes to Tyler Thornburg in relief.

The Brewers have captured the first two games in the four-game series.  Game three is tonight.  Jimmy Nelson (6-8) gets the start for Milwaukee.

A three-run sixth inning cost the Brewers in their first game back from the All-Star break.

Milwaukee led 3-1 thanks to RBI singles by Jonathan Lucroy and Jonathan Villar, as well as a solo home run from Scooter Gennett.

But the Reds got to starter Matt Garza in the home half of the sixth to take the lead and would go on to win 5-4. Garza allowed four runs on six hits in five plus innings to fall to 1-3.

Villar and Gennett each finished with two hits. Chris carter had a home run taken away from him in the fourth thanks to a leaping catch by Jay Bruce.

Nelson, Brewers drop series opener to Mets, 5-2 (AUDIO)

June 10, 2016 By Bill Scott

Milwaukee Brewers starter Jimmy Nelson was unable to keep the string of outstanding recent efforts on the hill intact Thursday in a 5-2 loss to the New York Mets.

Nelson (5-5) allowed eight hits and two runs in his five innings of work, however, it was his struggles against lefthanded bats that cause him the most trouble. Mets centerfielder Curtis Granderson led off the game with solo home run, then doubled and scored in the third.

The Brewers were able to battle back to within 2-1 after Kirk Nieuwenhuis scored on an Hernan Perez infield single in the seventh. The inning would be the last for Mets starter Bartolo Colon (5-3), who scattered eight hits and allowed the one run.

Reliever Corey Knebel, fresh off a stint on the 15-day disabled list with an oblique strain, entered for Milwaukee, but two runs on three hits to make it 4-1.

Scooter Gennett brought Milwaukee back within two in the eighth with a RBI single, capping a career-best 4-for-4 effort at the plate. Gennett has hits in six of his last eight at bats and is hitting an impressive .440 in the month of June. [Read more…]

Chase Anderson provides another stellar pitching effort in Brewers 4-0 win (AUDIO)

June 9, 2016 By Bill Scott

Chase Anderson

Chase Anderson

A feeling of deja vu set in at Miller Park on Wednesday night. One night after Zach Davies dominated the A’s with a no-hit bid into the seventh inning, Chase Anderson nearly matched it, taking his own attempt at a no-hitter deep into the sixth as part of a 4-0 Milwaukee Brewers win to complete a two-game sweep of Oakland.

Anderson (4-6) did not allow a hit until there were two outs in the sixth inning and finished the game giving up two hits in 6 2/3 innings. The righthander struck out four in earning his second consecutive win and improved to 3-1 with a 2.03 ERA in his last five outings.

Blaine Boyer and Will Smith combined to throw a scoreless 2 1/3 innings and close out the win, the Brewers’ tenth in their last 15 games. The recent run has pushed Milwaukee (28-31) within three games of a .500 record and four games of the wild card. [Read more…]
