Brewers deal for starting catcher

December 5, 2019 By Bill Scott

After losing free agent Yasmani Grandal to the Chicago White Sox, the Milwaukee Brewers made a deal today to acquire his potential replacement.

The Brewers sent minor league pitching prospect Adam Hill and a Competitive Round B draft pick to the Seattle Mariners for left-handed hitting Omar Narvaez.

Hill was acquired from the Mets last year in the Keon Broxton trade.  He went 7-9 with a 3.92 ERA in 26 games at Class A Wisconsin.  The Competitive Round B selection comes after the second round in 2020 that the Brewers were assigned this week.  That pick is currently the 70th overall selection in the draft.

The 27-year-old Narvaez played in 132 games with Seattle last season, hitting .278 with 22 home runs and 55 RBI.  He had a .353 on-base percentage, a .813 OPS and a .516 slugging percentage.

Narvaez is considered to be an offensive catcher and hit .289 against right-handed pitching last season.  Against lefties, he his just .227.  Narvaez hit 20 of his 22 home runs against right-handers.  Those numbers would suggest a potential platoon at catcher with right-handed hitting Manny Pina under contract for next season.

Defensively, Narvaez threw out just 18% of runners attempting to steal.

Narvaez still has three more years of contractual control and is projected to make about $2.9 million in salary arbitration this offseason.

Chase Anderson tossed shutout ball into the sixth inning and the offense did just enough to give the Milwaukee Brewers a 4-2 win over the Seattle Mariners in the series finale at Miller Park on Thursday.

The Brewers needed a strong outing from a starting pitcher.  Brewer starters carried a 6.81 ERA through 22 games in the month of June.  Their victory was just the third in the last ten games.

The Brewers scored four runs in the fourth inning, the first coming when Chase Anderson executed a suicide squeeze bunt to drive in Ryan Braun.  Orlando Arcia followed with a three-run, opposite field home run to right field to put the Brewers in front 4-0.

The Mariners scored twice in the sixth inning to make it 4-2, but the bullpen went to work from there, capped by a 6-out save from closer Josh Hader, his 19th of the season.

The Brewers play their final home series prior to the all-star break this weekend.  They will send Jhoulys Chacin (3-8, 5.88) to the mound against Pittsburgh’s Chris Archer (3-6, 5.56).

Starting pitching continues to struggle as Brewers fall to Mariners

June 27, 2019 By Bill Scott

Adrian Houser had been spectacular out of the Milwaukee Brewers bullpen, putting together a 1.05 ERA over a total of 14 outings.  But things didn’t go well for Houser in a starting role as the Brewers fell to the Seattle Mariners 4-2 on Wednesday night at Miller Park.

Houser made it through just two innings, allowing three runs on four hits with three walks in suffering the loss.

Brewers starters have compiled a 6.81 ERA in the month of June and it’s led to a 10-12 record for the month. [Read more…]

Brewers drop series opener against Seattle

June 26, 2019 By Bill Scott

The Seattle Mariners had 12 hits to pull out a 8-3 series opening win over the Milwaukee Brewers at Miller Park on Tuesday night.  Daniel Vogelbach clubbed a 2-run homer and starter Marco Gonzales (9-6) pitched five innings to earn his fourth straight win to lead the Mariners.

Four Seattle relievers shut the Brewers down over the final four innings.

The Brewers jumped out early with a run in the first, but the Mariners rebounded with a four-run third inning off of Brewers starter Zach Davies.  Davies fell to 7-2 after allowing 6-runs on 6-hits in four innings of work.

Dee Gordon’s run-scoring double in the fifth extended the Mariners lead to 7-1.

Yasmani Grandal hit a solo homer and Jesus Aguilar had a run-scoring single for the Brewers in the fifth. [Read more…]
