Jordy Nelson gets some S.I. love

November 25, 2014 By Bill Scott

Green Bay Packers wide receiver Jordy Nelson is a fan favorite of the Packers and a favorite target of quarterback Aaron Rodgers.  Nelson’s outstanding season has landed him a cover story in Sports Illustrated.

Tim Layden takes a look at Nelson’s back story, analyzing his outstanding numbers and gives fair-warning to the New England Patriots.  The corn-fed kid that the Packers imported from the Heartland to the Dairyland is the NFL’s most dangerous deep threat.  In his eyes, this season’s biggest game is an easy, and obvious call:  bet the farm on Green Bay.

“Jordy is a hardworking farm boy.  His physical skill set is second to none, but he’s smart, he works at his craft, he studies the game.  He’s a hardworking farm boy in his life, and he’s hardworking farm boy on the field.”  (Greg Jennings, former Packers and current Vikings receiver)

“First, great strength and combative hand technique to get off the line of scrimmage.  Second, he’s fast.  They underestimate him…Seriously, a lot of it has to do with the fact that guys look at him and say, ‘O.K., he’s a white guy; he can’t be that good.’  Well, he is that go0d.”  (Packers’ receivers coach Edgar Bennett)

Lacy on Sports Illustrated cover

August 1, 2014 By Bill Scott

Green Bay Packers running back Eddie Lacy is on the cover of the latest issue of Sports Illustrated.  It’s deserving after his outstanding rookie season.  He’s picked up in the first week of training camp right where he left off last season.

Fans in attendance at training camp workouts have seen Lacy bust long runs.  And they’ve seen him working hard on his receiving skills, wanting to get more opportunities in the passing game this season.  Mike McCarthy is asking his players to be three-down backs and Lacy will need to catch balls out of the backfield to do that.

The Sports Illustrated story discusses the contrast between the value of running backs in fantasy football and the value placed on them by coaches and GM’s around the NFL.  It covers Lacy’s upbringing and what he’s doing with the money he’s earned so far in the NFL.

Lacy thinks the cover story is “pretty cool”.  What Green Bay fans think is cool is the fact that Lacy seems to have brought back the relevance of the running back in the NFL.

Milwaukee Brewers center fielder Carlos Gomez has landed a spot on the cover of Sports Illustrated.  The cover is regional and features a story written by the magazine’s Luke Winn (Fort Atkinson native).

Winn was in Milwaukee last week to interview Gomez, as well as some of his teammates about him.

In 39 games this season, Gomez has a .290 batting average with a .369 on base percentage and a .555 slugging percentage.  Gomez has 9 home runs and 21 runs batted in.

It marks the first time a Brewer(s) has appeared on the cover of Sports Illustrated since Ryan Braun, Prince Fielder and Nyjer Morgan graced the cover on Aug. 29, 2011.

Gomez is currently awaiting word on a pending three-game suspension for his role in a brawl with the Pirates last month.
