Whitewater advances to Stagg Bowl Championship game

December 15, 2019 By Bill Scott

The six-time national champion UW-Whitewater Warhawks got a big defensive stop late to knock off St. John’s of Minnesota 35-32 to advance to the Stagg Bowl for the first time since 2014 and first time under head coach Kevin Bullis.

Warhawks linebacker Matt Anderson stripped Johnnies running back Kai Barber after a short reception to stop a late St. John’s drive.

The seventh-ranked Warhawks (13-1) advance to the title game against No. 5 North Central of Illinois, which advanced with a 45-14 win in the other D-3 National Semifinal over Muhlenberg (Pa.).

St. John’s quarterback Jackson Erdmann completed 29 of 50 passes for 342 yards and a touchdown.

Former UW-Whitewater head football coach Lance Leipold will be enshrined into the Wisconsin Football Coaches Association Hall of Fame Class of 2018 on Saturday, March 24, in Middleton.

Leipold, who played quarterback for the Warhawks from 1983-86 and served as head coach of the program from 2007-14, will be the lone college coach in this year’s induction class.  Leipold recently finished his third season as head football coach at Division 1 Buffalo.

As the head coach at Whitewater, Leipold amassed a 109-6 record, leading the Warhawks to seven WIAC titles, six national championships and one other trip to the Stagg Bowl.  He became the fastest head coach in college football history to reach the 100-career win plateau, doing so in just 106 games.  Leipold won the WIAC George Chryst Coach of the Year award four times and is a six-time national coach of the year recipient.

Titans play for NCAA D-3 title tonight

December 16, 2016 By Bill Scott

For the last 11 years, the NCAA Division-3 Football Championship game included powerhouse Mount Union.  In nine of those 11 years, UW-Whitewater served as the opponent.  Tonight, the Stagg Bowl Championship game will include neither.

The UW-Oshkosh Titans will represent the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) this season and their opponent will be Mary Hardin-Baylor of Texas (6 p.m. Friday ESPNU).

The Titans (13-1) advanced with a 10-3 win over John Carroll and UMHB (14-0) advanced by beating Mount Union 14-12.

Whitewater is one win from D-3 Championship game

December 12, 2015 By Bill Scott

UW-Whitewater Warhawk logoThe UW-Whitewater Warhawks are in familiar territory, just one win shy of a trip to the NCAA Division 3 National Championship game.

The Warhawks are very familiar with their opponent, Mount Union, but their meetings usually come in the title game.  The two teams have met in the National Championship Stagg Bowl game nine times in the last ten years.  The Warhawks have won the last five.

Today, the two teams meet in the semifinal round, on Mount Union’s home field in Alliance, Ohio.

The Purple Raiders are undefeated and ranked number-one in the nation coming in.  Their powerful offense is averaging 55 points a game.

The Warhawks advanced by beating WIAC rival Oshkosh 31-29 last Saturday in Oshkosh.

The winner heads to the Stagg Bowl championship game in Salem, Virginia next week.

UW-Whitewater has done it again.  The Warhawks captured the NCAA Division 3 football championship, knocking off rival Mount Union 43-34 at the Stagg Bowl in Salem, Virginia.

The two schools have met in nine of the last ten Stagg Bowl Championships.  Whitewater captured its sixth title, including the last five.

It was a parting gift for coach Lance Leipold, who leaves Whitewater to take over the coaching reigns at Division-1 Buffalo.  He leaves the state with a 34-1 record in post-season play and an overall record at Whitewater of 109-6.

Senior quarterback Matt Behrendt tossed four touchdown passes in the victory, extending the Warhawks winning streak to 32 straight games.

The two teams combined for 1,068 yards, including 688 through the air.  Behrendt passed for 365 yards and claimed the Stagg Bowl Most Outstanding Player honor for the second straight season.

Mount Union quarterback Kevin Burke threw for three scores but was picked off four times by the Whitewater defense.  Burke is the two-time defending player-of-the-year, but he is 0 for 2 in National Title games.
